Los Zetas Inc.: Criminal Corporations, Energy, and Civil War in Mexico, by Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera

Review

"Correa-Cabrera’s book approaches the Mexican Drug War through an analysis of the Zetas—the most powerful, well-armed, and technologically-advanced criminal corporation in Mexico. . . . This impressive contribution reveals the horrific realities, complexities, and products of neoliberal capitalism—though it is not so much of a “new” violence as much as an evolution of existing forms of it." (NACLA: The Report on the Americas 2018-03-01)"The strength of Correa’s book is that she links security and political economy outcomes in Mexico in a way that is not reductionist. That is, she avoids ascribing the economic outcomes of the Mexican drug war to the logic of neoliberalism or of capitalism more generally, but rather considers the complex political mediations between the calculations of political elites and the expansion of transnational extractive activities in Mexico." Review

"The recent energy reform in Mexico appears to have opened exploitation to a modern network of ruthless transnational criminal organizations and their partners in business and government. This book makes a momentous contribution to understanding that process. It will be required reading for scholars and students of Mexican/border politics and energy policy, US government agencies, security consulting firms, and nonprofit organizations." (Kathleen Staudt, Endowed Professor of Western Hemispheric Trade Policy Studies, University of Texas at El Paso, and coauthor of Courage, Resistance, and Women in Cuidad Juárez: Challenges to Militarization)"Correa-Cabrera’s book takes us inside the Zetas. Her unprecedented access to this organization and her ability to gain the confidence of her subjects provides us an extraordinary understanding of the evolution and current state of this powerful transnational criminal organization. She goes beyond the simplistic view of Los Zetas as a drug-trafficking organization and shows how they have diversified into many different sectors, including different components of the lucrative energy sector. This is essential reading for those interested in Mexican society and politics, as well as those who seek to understand the growth and development of criminal organizations." (Louise I. Shelley, Omer L. and Nancy Hirst Endowed Chair and University Professor at the Schar School of Policy and Government, George Mason University)"When Felipe Calderón declared war on organized crime in Mexico, he did not foresee the humanitarian tragedy that this war would cause. Little by little, the consequences of this ignorance have been corrected, but many gaps and problems remain. In this book, Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera makes a critical contribution to our understanding of Los Zetas, one of the bloodiest crime syndicates of all time. Los Zetas Inc. is essential reading for all those who seek to develop a viable strategy for stopping violence in Mexico." (Sergio Aguayo, Professor, El Colegio de México)"Correa-Cabrera presents us with a superbly researched, beautifully written, and timely new book on the Zetas organized crime group in Mexico, one of the country’s most notorious and brutal criminal organizations. She traces the Zetas from their origins as Mexican special forces, through their transformation into bodyguards for the Gulf Cartel, to their break with the cartel and their rise (and decline) as an independent and powerful criminal paramilitary band. Her analysis of the role of the Zetas in the Mexican drug trade—and their diversification into other criminal activities within the context of Mexico’s ongoing, undeclared, and extremely violent ‘civil war’—is masterful." (Bruce M. Bagley, Department of International Studies, University of Miami)"Los Zetas Inc. is an extensively researched resource on a topic few have dared to broach. With it, Correa-Cabrera has made a singular contribution to our collective understanding of the ongoing war in Mexico." (Dawn Paley, author of Drug War Capitalism)"Correa-Cabrera gives a cogent, deeply researched, and devastating account in her book Los Zetas Inc. about what’s really at the heart of the long, deadly drug war in Mexico. She shows us that the conflict is about much more than the illegal drug market. It’s about greed, politics, corruption, and Mexico’s dwindling natural resources. This is a must-read for anyone who wants to know the truth about the ‘war on drugs’ in Mexico." (Melissa del Bosque, investigative reporter at the Texas Observer and author of Bloodlines)

Very informative read with an interesting approach to look at LZ as a structured enterprise that leverages common business practices to drive it's agenda. As with many business related books, the statistics and many cross references to other people's work makes it at times a rather dry lecture, yet the insights are quiet interesting .

Excellent read, if you're into this stuff, which I am. Not many detailed books on the subject matter in English

Hands down the most well-written book I have ever read. Extremely clear, easy to follow and interesting eye-opening topics. Guadalupe cuenta la verdadera historia de las organizaciones criminales transnacionales y el gobierno Mexico - simplemente el libro del año!

Origninal and well argued.

As a journalist who writes about the U.S.-Mexico border, I have interviewed Guadalupe Correa-Cabrera many times as have many other journalists who write about Mexico and the border. Correa-Cabrera is one of the most knowledgeable scholars out there with in depth information on how organized crime and politics work in Mexico, especially the state of Tamaulipas where it is very difficult to obtain information because of the intense censorship. I highly recommend this book as it explains who benefits from the "drug war" and why the drug war is about much more than the trafficking of drugs. Correa-Cabrera's book is an important contribution in explaining the nearly two-decade conflict in Mexico, which has gotten very little in depth attention in the United States. Los Zetas Inc. is a must read, Melissa del Bosque Journalist/Author.

Dr. Guadalupe Correra-Cabrera has written an essential text for both the general public and global policy makers. The book is well written and is meticulously researched citing a plethora of authorities to aid further academic study. The author exposed herself to significant danger to perform field work few would dare attempt ! Dr. Correa-Cabrera shows that the term "drug cartel" is outdated because these groups are transnational criminal organizations associated with illicit narcotics, mining, avocados, hydrocarbons, CD piracy, kidnapping for ransom, extortion and other activities. This dark multi-billion dollar enterprise could not exist without corruption, impunity and even international finance where global banking cleanses billions of such dollars. This book describes how these organizations evolved from operating under the old "plaza" concessions regulated by the government into quasi-governmental entities in a place like Tamaulipas where the group collects taxes, enforces rules, conducts road blocks and influences law enforcement and municipal actions. Many Americans will be surprised by the economic impact on the American side of the border and "who benefits" from theses activities. Today we see the global drug problem violently affecting the United States, Europe and places like the Philippines where the president is under intense scrutiny for his heavy handed dealing with "drug dealers." Given how the various "war on drugs" have floundered or even exacerbated this global menace for over four decades it is time to take a fresh look at the problem and with open minds come to better solutions to benefit everyone. Make this book a gift for anyone you know !
