I needed this book for my LAN class and thought I'd go the cheaper route getting a used copy. Much to my surprise it was in amazing shape. Not a single mark or blemish on any page. However there was someone else's note in there, which is hardly a problem - just thought I'd state that. It even came with the original receipt.

Received book promptly and in very good condition as described. Book is paperback which is fine... much lighter. Very happy with purchase. Book (I believe) had an 'overseas' ISBN which was no big deal.... it's the same book. Definitely would buy thru Amazon books again.

This is just what I needed when my professor changed the book in our class. Works great on my Kindle.

The material still talks about old and outdated topics but is a good baseline. Has the principles behind networking and is easy to read. If you'd want to further your study on Cat6 or Gigabit this book won't cover it.

This book has been a big delusion. Of course it depends on what I was looking for.The book teaches network concepts from the basis and it doesn't cover more advanced topics.I already learnt many concepts presented in the book from internet tutorials or from other books (Tanenbaum). I think this book would have been useful to me two years ago. The only innovative chapter that tought me better how to "Design And Implement Networks" is "Lan/Wan/Lan Connection". Almost all other chapters are introductory explanations of existing protocols and technologies. I find the title misleading.Well explained. A good book to start from but insufficient as a second read.

I was required to use this book (2nd edition) for a class at American Sentinel University. The book is dated but still has useful information. It covers all major areas of networking briefly. I found the book to be a bit boring but I am sure it will be a decent reference book. Unless you have to buy this book for school I would recommend skipping it. I am giving this book three stars because it has useful information and lots of hands on activities. Two plus years ago it would be 4.5 stars. I really like the Thomson Course Technology books but this one is just too dated.

Although outdated in some areas (minimal) this book is great! We use it for our Networking Essentials class. One of the advantages of this book is that is is cross-platform. The terms apply to networks and technologies irrelevant of the vendor or operating system. The case studies and the projects provide a great opportunity for developing hands on experience in each of the chapters. I highly recommend this book since it complements very well the Cisco Academy Semesters 1-2 Book!!

This is a very interesting and useful guide of Baseball Hall of Famers' autographs. However, I was expecting to receive a book of color photographs of the autographs (as shown in the "look inside" pages of the Amazon listing), but the book contains only black-and-white photos of the autographs. This disappointed me because I felt that I was misled to believe I would receive a more attractive book. The "look inside" pages should be corrected to show what the book actually contains--black-and-white photos.

A good supplemental reference guide for baseball H.O.F. autograph collectors. Limited as no evaluation of formation and many HOF examples not present. Like Mark Allen Baker`s Baseball Autograph Handbook better!

This is a nice reference book for Hall Of Fame autographs, however.....After using the "look inside" feature to see what I would be getting for $39.95, I saw page after page of color samples, which to me justified the price. When my book arrived I was VERY disapointed to see NO COLOR at all?? My book looks like a black and white Xerox copy of the book shown for sale. The pictures shown on the "Look Inside" feature need to be updated.

I have been struggling for three years to develop an effective method for teaching Elementary aged children beginning percussion lessons. This book has everything I have been looking for all in a very kid friendly package. I can't wait to start using it tomorrow!

The two main recommendations in the book are worthwhile, which are that direct mentoring of young people is key and smaller communities rather than larger programs are the desired setting. All of that is established in the first part of the book, with some helpful step-by-step recommendations at the end (like how to get a small community started, how to recruit parent leaders, etc.). I appreciated this book in the initial stages.In the second half of the book, the author goes well beyond his area of knowledge. He is incredibly harsh on Catholic schools, seemingly on the basis of a few news reports of exceptional cases such as ones involving gay faculty who get married. He even comments on the Land O Lakes agreement and blames it (without any supporting evidence) for the downfall of most Catholic collegesâ€¦ with certain exceptions, which happen to align with the Cardinal Newman Societyâ€™s list.As a youth minister with valuable experience and a couple important insights, the author has something useful to share, but not enough was included to sustain this book. By trying to comment on too much in too thin a manner, the whole book became rather suspect in my eyes.

As a 16 year old, I can say that this book really hit home on what it means to be a teenager. Recently I've been talking with my parents about youth ministry a lot, trying to pinpoint where the disconnect between youth groups and the faith formation classes and true, lasting discipleship is. This book answered many of my questions, put words to my thoughts, and inspired me to pursue my calling to youth ministry with new eyes and a fresh heart. I would sincerely recommend this book to anyone involved in any area of youth ministry!

This is far and away the best book on youth ministry I have ever read. Everett Fritz identifies and responds to many of the struggles with parish youth ministry with wonderful clarity. After reading this I am confident that I will be changing the model of high school youth ministry at my parish in the coming months. I read the entire book in one sitting; I just couldnâ€™t put it down!

I have been giving away copies left and right, and urging people to buy their own when I don't have a copy to give. Fritz nails the problems with the current model of youth ministry, and his proposed solutions are in accord with what I've seen work.

The idea of discipleship has been gaining momentum now for a number of years, and with this book Everett Fritz demonstrates how to bring discipleship efforts to teens.In the first part of the book, Fritz diagnoses the problems: youth groups are not forming lifelong followers of Jesus Christ. Even those teens who are active in youth ministries - attending meetings, mission trips, conferences, retreats, etc. - often end up drifting away from the faith in college or young adulthood.Fritz argues that this is because youth groups failed to meet the needs of the teens that they ministered to. Teens need to be understood, belong, be able to open up and share their lives, have their questions answered, and be mentored. Large-scale youth ministry often fails to meet many or any of these needs.Fritz then moves on to look at why this is - citing additional cultural, family, and school challenges. In the final part of the book he then moves to the solution: discipleship-based small groups with adult mentors. He cites his own experience across many different parishes and environments to support this model and provides practical guidance on how to set up and implement this type of youth ministry.All-in-all, the author makes a convincing case: he diagnoses the problem and provides a solution that could readily be adopted without a huge investment in resources.One slight criticism I have of the book his discussion of Religious Ed (or CCD) - here he diagnoses the problem with great insight - but then does not follow up with any proposed solutions. A substantial number of RE students are pre-teens - and I donâ€™t think he is proposing small groups for, say, 4th graders.That said, the book is about teen ministry - he recommends starting with freshman in high school - and here the author makes an argument that all youth ministers should consider.

Very informative. Read it in one night. Easy to implement. A must for every youth minister.

This book helped me shift from a focus of large gatherings to small groups, where discipleship can really take place. I am a non-Catholic youth pastor in a Protestant church but the authors ideas and strategies are equally as applicable. Will be applying this soon.

There are times I, a reasonably mature woman feel slightly embarrassed to reveal I like stories like this. Yeah, just a tad immature, just a tad unbelievable, just a tad silly even, but after reading heavier stories and living in a world of disappointment and heartache, occasionally it's ok to indulge in such frivolity. These are some of your basic Christian love stories. They are connected, not tightly, but enough so it's better to read them in order. I found the "action"/"danger" in two of the stories to be slightly unbelievable in parts and, occasionally, some of the authors love "chemistry" between the h/h to be a bit contrived, but still, these are all heartwarming, easy reads with sweet outcomes. While totally unbelievable at times, what woman amongst us women would deny she'd like a guy like these men portrayed? We'd have to be hard-hearted, dense, stupid or .... whatever... to deny these are not fine men. Are they too good to be true? Yup, definitely. I only vaguely recall that the women often acted quite immature. The men too at times. And the physical attraction? I much prefer stories that show men and women becoming friends first before the "just-a-slight-touch/look-sent shivers-down-her-spine" type instant attraction that permeated most of these stories. Oh well, I DID pay for them and fully knew what I was getting BEFORE I bought the series. I bought several additional books too in this series deliberately. They are simply "feel good". What can I say? You choose.....

Three servicemen, good friends all in deployment after deployment together..then the one that changed lives completely two injured, one more so than the other..the third a hero. Each man has his own story to tell, other than the one of war.Three stories well told, much of it taking place at the Three Rivers Ranch. Three men's stories impacted by God's Hand in their lives, their decisions, even when it might not be clear to them He was working with them on decisions made.Three women whose stories are told at the same time, their lives intersecting with the three men, love stories, seriously told..I found as the Reader, it was hard to lay the book down, even when one story ended & another began. Again, stories well written, believable, & so current to our times.I think you'll find as I did, when it's well written, you want to read until you get to the end & part you doesn't want it to end. Enjoy!

The stories progressively improved along the way. 1- it was difficult to believe that a guy would hold a grudge re a prom invite from 10 years prior. 2- really difficult believe someone who was raised on a ranch didn't know how to bridle a horse even after 10 years. 3- more plausible and more depth to the characters.

This was a great story line, very believable and interesting. I enjoyed all three books that were in this boxed set. They were tired together in a way that made it feel like I'd just read one book, but each book could have been read as a stand alone. I truly enjoyed this author and will definitely read the rest of the stories in this series and happily start any new books from Liz Isaacson.

No doubt about it, this author knows how to write! Excellent storylines, draws you in and makes it easy to identify with the characters. The second book should have come with a little warning that one might need tissues or you may have trouble seeing the words due to the tears.....at least that was my issue...powerful writing when one can evoke real emotions from the reader, IMO. Each book can be a stand alone read, but the stories are so good, you'll be glad to have the first 3 in a set and I was just able to get book 4 and the Christmas story of Three Rivers. Plus, each book, the author approached the writing of the story a little writing style difference, that is refreshing and enjoyable to read. Reading how these special military men dealt with injuries and home life after they gave of themselves to fight for us to stay free and safe, and then come home, and work that they still were/are helping others. I loved the idea of the ranch using the horses to help others heal, mentally, emotionally and physically. But the people alone, I loved them! It gives me hope of all the good people out side my little area doing so much good, and so caring, even as they themselves struggle with their own issues. This is a definite good, clean, inspirational read, well done.

"Second Chance Ranch" is a story of love, redemption, and second chances (obviously since it is found in the title). Squire and Kelly have a love story that is not typically for most romance authors, it is different without being too different. When you dive into this story you will meet two characters that could be your next door neighbors if you didn't look hard enough."Third Time's the Charm" is a wonderful tale of healing, peace, and hope that takes place within two people that never thought it could happen to them. People say that time heals all wounds, but for these two people horses actually have the magical touch. Some say that God works in mysterious ways, and that is seen throughout this beautifully told novel."Fourth and Long" is a beautiful story about second chances, even when they aren't the easiest thing to come by. Brett and Kate where married for only a short time before he was shipped out for a tour in Iraq, but what he didn't know was that even though Kate had asked for a divorce two months into his tour- it was never finalized. Kate found out she was pregnant and now she is back, multiple years later, to finally tell Brett the truth. Is it too late?

I am loving this series. I was so into the books, I couldn't put them down. I love this type of feel good, clean love story. Don't get me wrong, they still have ups and downs and some sad parts. But it ends with boy meets girl, boy gets girl, with some life lessons thrown in.

Too Sad. Beautiful book; too bad I can't give it as a gift to a child. After a trip to Sleeping Bear Dunes, my 15 year old was going to give this to the 2 year old who she babysits, but the sad ending that goes on over several pages describing a mother bear's terrifying loss and longing for lost cubs is too much. I wish the story could have been told with a happier kid-friendly ending because the book is beautifully written and illustrated.

All parents of children living in NW Michigan should buy this book for their children as well as take them to the Sleeping Bear National Seashore. It is an enchanting story and a beautiful place for families to enjoy. I love the way Wargin told the story.

Our grandchildren, 2 of whom live out of Michigan, enjoy these legends. It reminds them of the special place that their grandparents live--Northern Michigan. This book was a special request for a birthday gift by an 8-year-old grandson.

I gave this book to my grandchildren before our visit to the sleeping bear dunes. Itâ€™s a beautiful story with beautiful illustrations.

Having lived near the Dunes for 12+years, this book is near and dear to my heart. We bought this for our son, to go along with other fine 'Legend' books of the area. Now, if I could only get through this book without crying!!! Amazing illustration and well told, this is truly the legend of the Sleeping Bear!!

Great book for a Michigander kid!

I was telling my 4 year old the story of sleeping bear dunes but did not have any stories about it, this book is perfect. Every time we read it, she asked me new questions about the momma bear. The books is clear and yet keeps enough at older age levels so that as my daughter grows, so will her understanding of a mothers loss and the lower of storytelling. It is a great book.

This is an excellent book. There is no book like it -- a comprehensive review of studies and reports on herb side effects, contraindications and drug interactions, negative and positive. Unlike many books that looks at the scientific literature, this one is discriminating about the significance of various reports and studies, and helpfully rates the information by the level of significance and credibility. This book has been a valuable tool in my clinical practice and as a student, and I recommend it for anyone practicing herbalism.

I bought this book for a class and love it. It's easy to use and understand; addressing common conditions along with the drug and complementary herbal adjuncts and contraindications if any. He shares some case studies as examples, which I find very helpful. I highly recommend this book.

I've never believed in accepting the knowledge from just one source. When it comes to herbal medications, I always want to get that 2nd opinion. Great book here.

Sadly I didn't find this book to be helpful at all. I am a beginner and didn't see any valuable instructions on stitching. There were only finished photos which were extremely small with no details. I feel like I completely wasted my money.

Boethius wrote this while in jail waiting for his execution around 524 - 525 AD. I had never read anything by the man, but this text, short as it is, became one of the cornerstones of medieval thought and influenced countless other authors and thinkers.Boethius wrote it to console himself. In his darkest hour he turned to two things, God and his training in philosophy to give himself hope, to sort through his doubts and concerns. His imaginary conversation with Lady Philosophy shows his education from Athens, his reaching out to God for his final and ultimate source of strength is driven from his belief in the miracle in Jerusalem.This isn't argument for the existence of God, Boethius assumes outright that God exists, this is a book from a man on the ropes, his life in tatters, with no help coming and his death assured. This is the cry of a man seeking hope from the sources that had supported him his adult life. This is from a man that was staring fate square in the eye and refused to do anything except meet it on his own terms. Boethius ends the Roman era with aplomb while planting the seeds of Medieval Scholasticism.The book is easy to read, his arguments clear and straight to the point. He treats the existence of God like the existence of philosophy, both are beyond dispute.But what struck me the most was how timeless his worries and concerns were and how Lady Philosophy's answers are just applicable now; Boethius is relevant today as much as he was when King Alfred the Great set about laying the foundation to recover his civilization.I have no way of proving this idea, but there was a passage that struck me as being the inspiration for one of the well know quotes from Shakespeare's Hamlet. Read this from Boethius: "This very place which thou callest exile is to them that dwell therein their native land. So true is it that nothing is wretched, but thinking makes it so, and conversely every lot is happy if borne with equanimity."And here's Hamlet Act II, Scene ii: "Why, then, 'tis none to you; for there is nothingeither good or bad, but thinking makes it so: to meit is a prison."Too much of a match to be mere coincidence.The book's impact cannot be measured. Boethius himself cast a long shadow against the centuries, his translations and commentaries of classic Greek philosophical texts were used by the educated Christian world during the Medieval Scholastic period and beyond.The Consolation is a fusion of Christian and Classical Greek and Roman thought that quite literally changed the world.

An underappreciated work very much in need at this time. In short, a discussion about what being self cognizant and sufficient allows in comparison to what depending upon fleeting experiences and "things" allows. A comparative evaluation about true happiness versus that which is simply pleasurable. This work was written as Boethius was awaiting his death and as he contemplates the purpose of leading a good life. Incredibly insightful.

... Then said I: 'Verily, thy pleas are plausibleâ€”yea, steeped in the honeyed sweetness of music and rhetoric. But their charm lasts only while they are sounding in the ear; the sense of his misfortunes lies deeper in the heart of the wretched. So, when the sound ceases to vibrate upon the air, the heart's indwelling sorrow is felt with renewed bitterness...."This is H. R. James translation first published in 1897. As a younger man, I disdained any version which turned Boethius's unrhymed Latin meters into rhymed English- how could such versions be literal? Mellowed out in middle age, and still unable to read the original, I appreciate James's renditions and imagine them as faithful in their way as any before or since:SONG I. The Thorns of Error.Who fain would sow the fallow field,And see the growing corn,Must first remove the useless weeds,The bramble and the thorn.After ill savour, honey's tasteIs to the mouth more sweet;After the storm, the twinkling starsThe eyes more cheerly greet.When night hath past, the bright dawn comesIn car of rosy hue;So drive the false bliss from thy mind,And thou shall see the true.It is a very edifying work- very worthwhile reading when one is in a serious mood. It is more of a distillation or recapitulation of ancient philosophy (from Plato to Seneca) than bold new thought- Augustine is better in that respect.... And yet wealth cannot extinguish insatiable greed, nor has power ever made him master of himself whom vicious lusts kept bound in indissoluble fetters; dignity conferred on the wicked not only fails to make them worthy, but contrarily reveals and displays their unworthiness. Why does it so happen? Because ye take pleasure in calling by false names things whose nature is quite incongruous theretoâ€”by names which are easily proved false by the very effects of the things themselves; even so it is; these riches, that power, this dignity, are none of them rightly so called.Finally, something which struck me forcibly when I read it a year ago:... But let us consider a few instances whereby appears what is the competency of human reason to fathom the Divine unsearchableness. Here is one whom thou deemest the perfection of justice and scrupulous integrity; to all-knowing Providence it seems far otherwise. We all know our Lucan's admonition that it was the winning cause that found favour with the gods, the beaten cause with Cato. So, shouldst thou see anything in this world happening differently from thy expectation, doubt not but events are rightly ordered; it is in thy judgment that there is perverse confusion.

I admit I'd first heard of this book when reading Confederacy of Dunces decades ago. I thought I should read read it and it was worthwhile ,if not consistently fascinating.I suspect this is a somewhat weird translation , very faux Shakespearean or Elizabethan .Although at times it's deliberately antiquarian tone works.The first half to three quarters of the book are the best.There if your patient you'll find a lot of nuggets of solid moral philosophy and considerable literary charm and imagination.The later part of the book seems overly preoccupied with the problem of free will and how can there be free will in a world where God foreknows all.The fact that I thought I had an easier and clearer answer to this problem than the embodiment of Philosophy did not lead me to think I'm a philosophical genius.Rather I suspect I was dealing with something that deeply troubled the author for reasons I don't understand.You will know you are not in the modern world when you read this but do not for a moment conclude that this books concerns have been rendered irrelevant by modern"enlightenment".

'Click' is a charming, well-crafted kids title that doesn't talk down, or even kneel, to its audiences level but gets all the way in the sandbox. A slice-of-life story, the stakes are low and the problems are emotional, but finds its drama in the very real problems kids face in their lives, rather than resorting to the metaphorical adventures that a lot of storytelling for kids seems to rely on. Author Miller doesn't see any reason to NEED to exaggerate the problems kids face because to kids they are as real and as meaningful as they feel and above all this book's writing excels at this point. Beyond the script, the art is perfectly balanced for the smaller scale of book, with easy-reading pastel colors and clearly defined linework, with notable moments of visual detail baked into the pages that adds a real artistic texture to the book, like a panel purely inserted to show the stars on Olive's wall are glow-in-the-dark decals. I may be a couple of decades (and children) shy of being able to honestly say what a kid would think of this book, but as a fan of the medium regardless of target demographic, 'Click' is a confident, gentle, and worthwhile title that takes kids seriously without feeling overly serious.

Do you like comic books / graphic novels? Original, relatable characters? Story lines that are both entertaining, and meaningful? Buy this book. Olive, her family, and her friends are from all across the spectrum of life - this book is a great reminder about how sometimes we all feel like we don't have a place - until we finally discover it with the help of family and friends. The original artwork (and self-created font!) is amazing, and a great addition to any library. Can't wait until her next book releases!

This is a wonderful book with an invaluable lesson for today's children. One of my favorite new tools for a parent or grandparent, hoping to offer positive and retainable development assistance to a elementary school level child.

I liked this book and I will recommend it.The thing that I really did not like is that we should read how Olive present.

This was actually a rather strange take on the "I want to fit in" story. From page one, it is obvious that the main character is popular with nearly everyone. Usually, the person feeling like they don't fit in is an oddball that is ostracized or bullied, but in this case it is a much different person trying to find her place in the world. This makes this an amazingly fresh and maybe even important book. Pair this with some of the other books out there like Brave and Smile and you get a library of books that shows how universal this finding your place theme is for everyone around you, even those that seem to have it all put together.There are no bullies or baddies in this book really, just the process of figuring out who you are and where you fit in. The characters are strong, the drama not so strong, but the plot endearing. I like the artwork and the quick page turning pace of the story. Bring on the next installment!

Olive doesn't want to ask to join their acts--as if! She also doesn't want to insert herself into sleepovers or hanging out at the mall. Although her mother Lucy wants to swoop in with her phone and fix Olive's social life, Olive, true to her growing independence and to kids' literature, wants to solve her own problem. Fortunately, she has her green-haired variety-show-loving single Chinese-takeout-eating Aunt Molly to provide a wise perspective that encourages Olive's ability to solve her own problems.And solve them she does. I'm not giving away the surprise, but it is a showstopper.I fell in love with Olive and her friends as well as her family, including her goofy little brother Goober, with whom, despite sibling rivalry, Olive has a strong bond--the two watch DVDs of old comedy variety shows (think the golden age of Carol Burnett or Johnny Carson) and giggle over them. Also, Olive's varied diverse friends prove, as Aunt Molly says, that Olive is able to maintain friendships with different kinds of people--including the fashionista Ava, who decides that Olive needs a dress for her act. Olive's engaging teacher, Mr. Florez, looks like a cross between Leonard Hofstadter of "The Big Bang Theory" and Dilton Doiley of the Archie Comics.The art is engaging and captures the confusion and the vitality of fifth grade. A winner of a graphic novel. May the readers be inspried and find that "Olive" their dreams come true!

This graphic novel by author/artist Kayla Miller is sweet and thoughtful and heartwarming. It is suggested for ages 10-12 but I think younger readers would enjoy it as well. Fifth grader Olive is happy with her life and her many friends at school until the day the talent show is announced and everyone immediately splits into groups and acts, none of which include her. Olive wonders what might be wrong with her. Why didn't anyone include her. At home for the weekend, Olive confides her worries to her family, which includes her mother, younger brother and Aunt Molly. Her family are supportive and offer solutions, but none of them seem right to Olive until Aunt Molly leads her to something that inspires her.The book has lovely art and a great soft color palette. I like the artist's way of drawing faces - simple, stylized and effective. Lots of diversity in the cast of characters. The story is pretty straight forward and the characters are all positive. This may not seem like the norm in this age but it was actually very refreshing. I was filled with warm fuzzies at the end. Loved it. I'm glad to say this is the first of a series. Olive will be back in "Camp."
