I read this book to give me the basics on Islam. It was recommended by a member of the Global University faculty in Springfield, Missouri who has dozens of years in the discipline. I was not disappointed. The explanations were clear, the history well couched in a modern critique, allowing for the variety of possible interpretations of that history. Malek's remarks, from an insider of life with Muslims is highly valuable. But the book is basic; it does not elaborate much more than to give the barest factual outlines before moving on to the next topic. I don't fault it for that, since no small volume would do justice to a topic of such breadth. But, to be fair, Malek makes a game effort to cover all the bases, including a variety of techniques to reach out to Muslims. It is a great book for a beginner, but gives more than a few nods to those who wish to delve deeper into the worldwide phenomenon that Islam is.

Excellent book with details and explanations from a great perspective that endears you to have compassion for Muslims and not hate them.

Sobhi Malek begins his book looking at Islamic theology, the origins of the Qur'an, Muslim belief and practice all in a tone of apologetics. He presents an Islamic teaching and then places it in the light of historical or Biblical data. The approach is meant to educate Christians in the ways and beliefs of Islam and not meant to be presented to Muslims as a "corrective" to their teachings. In fact later in the book Malek mentions we don't need to attack Islam before we present the gospel. Attacking the Qur'an, Mohammed or any other sacred measure of Islam just creates a barrier to the gospel presentation. Malek shows a good understanding of Muslim theology and teachings. It's a great resource for learning about Islam; and not just its teachings but how it is actually practiced and influences the Muslim rational.Malek's main argument is that Christians need to present the gospel not as "high religion" but as a practical "low religion" that has impact on our daily lives. Most Muslims are trapped in fear, live day to day, bound by legalism. Any gospel that does not show them how Jesus takes care of our needs has little appeal to Muslims. When Jesus is presented as a God who desires to care for us, who conquers fears and supplies our needs through faith the message becomes more tangible. The last few chapters represent methods of using the Spirit's power to reach out to Muslims. This section is a reflection of how God's Spirit penetrates political borders and human barriers. Too often Christians look at Islam and confine it to an impenetrable political boundary line. God's power is beyond man's boundaries. God has provided His Spirit as a means to minister to others and to demonstrate God's power. Malek makes the point clear that it is a tool that never supersedes the gospel but should instead point to the saving power of Jesus.Malek uses many footnotes. The sources range from academic works on Islam to personal interviews to newspaper clips and current events. Islam has many faces and its adherents vary widely in the own understanding of Islam, as the diverse citations prove. This book is one of the longer books in addressing Muslim ministry but is also one of the most informative out of the dozens I've studied.

Among all the books available on Islam and how to communicate the Christian faith to Muslims, "Islamic Exodus" stands alone in its recognition that only the Holy Spirit can truly reach the Muslim heart and mind. Virtually all other books - regardless of the theological background or the real world experience of their authors - focus on the way to thread one's way through the thicket of Islamic belief. Malek does what Alexander the Great did when confronted with the Gordian Knot: he sizes it up (assesses the theology and belief system that is Islam) and then proceeds to hack it into pieces with his assertion (born out in those countries where Muslims are indeed turning from Islam to Jesus Christ as only Lord and Saviour) that nothing less than a full, free, and intentional exercise of the gifts of the Holy Spirit will succeed in persuading Muslims that Jesus Himself is indeed the True Path to God. "Islamic Exodus" is a thoroughly Pentecostal book. So don't read it if you've already made up your mind on that subject. On the other hand, if you're frustrated in your efforts to communicate Christ to Muslim friends, neighbors or colleagues, what have you got to lose? Buy "Islamic Exodus", read it with an open and prayerful mind, and be open to whatever the Spirit of God leads you to do with what you've learned from it. The worst that could happen? You'll be out $24 plus shipping.

A book that has approximately 350 quotes from dependable authors, and an extensive bibliography of several pages, is worth reading.

Interior States: Essays, by Meghan O'Gieblyn

Review

"One of the most consistently absorbing collection of essays I've read in a long time. Meghan O'Gieblyn is at times rueful, at times hard-hitting, but hers is a distinctly independent-minded and nuanced voice." —Daphne Merkin "For insight into America's eschatological mind-set, and into fundamentalist culture generally, there may be no more eloquent guide than Meghan O'Gieblyn, who was raised in the faith and then -- painfully, reluctantly -- abandoned it... What she captures most vividly here is Christianity's indomitable reach... Thrillingly alive, her essays are testaments to exquisite attentiveness, each painstakingly stitched and emitting a pleasing, old-fashioned whiff of starch."—The New York Times Book Review"[A] standout." —Minneapolis Star Tribune "Comparing O’Gieblyn’s writing on the Midwest to Didion’s essays on California might seem too easy, but the comparison is apt. Both authors seem to be looking for a way out of their homeland, even as they admit they’ll probably never leave."—Bookforum "O'Gieblyn has done an excellent job of pinning down [the Midwest's] character... [She has] a gift for seeing beyond the ideological veil to the other side of things... In a time when few voices are willing to engage with positions they disagree with, O’Gieblyn writes with refreshing sensitivity about subjects and institutions with which she often has foundational disagreements... A searching, powerful book, full of insight and generous critical inquiry.—The Believer "An essayist of uncommon vision... [O'Gieblyn] displays a knack for noting the traces of the religious in the supposedly secular, as well as the inverse... An inquiry into the very heart of contemporary American life."—Los Angeles Review of Books"[O'Gieblyn] displays a hyper-awareness of her region’s place in history... Interior States can be taken as a record of the neuroses of a cradle evangelical... Can anything replace religious belief? This is the question that haunts O’Gieblyn’s book, even at its end."—The Point "O’Gieblyn’s writing about the Midwest avoids the usual folksiness or cutesiness inherent in many such essays. There are no cute anecdotes about raising chickens or rooting for the Packers here. Instead, she plumbs the complexities of the Midwestern identity, what keeps us here and what compels us to leave."—The Capital Times, Madison

I found this to be an interesting collection of thoughtful, soul-baring essays, which are by no means given over to "Sunday School answers". I suspect that author might say that "Sunday School answers" contributed to her loss of faith. The author shares an admirable level of honesty and personal integrity throughout the volume.Search for an interview at vox.com to learn more about the author as that how I came to know about her and this collection of essays. As for the organization of the book, it seems that most of the essays had been previously published in a wide range of journals, magazines, etc. However, that in no way is intended to be detracting - just the facts. For my personal taste, the book could have been better organized - more thematic, if possible - but I'm glad that I purchased and read it.Finally, I hope one day to read her next published collection and that it might be of a wandering soul that has found peace and fulfillment.

"Interior States :Essays" takes a hard look at Fundamentalism in America from its roots to the current state of affairs with a vice president who abides all things done by a faithless president. The author’s essays about growing up in evangelical Protestantism are eye opening; she argues against the faith she was brought up in with clarity and grace. It was during her second year at Bible school when she read "The Brothers Karamazov" and entertained for the first time the problem of hell, how evil could exist with a benevolent God. When O’Gieblyn finally stopped calling herself a Christian in her early twenties, it was because “being a Christian no longer meant anything…the gospel became just another product someone was trying to sell me.”Her essay on "Hell" pointedly asks how Christian churches today can remain silent "on the problem of evil, for fear of becoming obsolete,” calling it a willingness to tailor Christian values to whatever the audience wants. However, it is O'Gieblyn's essay "Exiled," that I find so remarkable. It certainly clears the fog (in my mind) about Mike Pence's acceptance to serve under Trump. Now I know why he smiles so benignly when Trump throws out his falsehoods—Pence is a Daniel-like figure behind the throne of an "angry, irrational king," waiting patiently for the political path to clear so he can return America to its Christian roots.

I took notice when I realized that three of my favorite recent reads (“Sniffing Glue,” “Midwestworld,” and “Dispatch from Flyover Country”) were all by the same author—Meghan O’Gieblyn. Naturally, I was eager to get my hands on “Interior States,” a generous collection of incisive observations about what we believe, who we’ve been, and what we are becoming. O’Gieblyn’s points of entry are the Midwest and her own evangelical upbringing, but she investigates these subjects so deeply and smartly that one begins to see complicity branching everywhere into our cultural narratives and biases. To read these essays is like a having doctor show you x-rays and then having it hit you that those serious-looking shadows aren’t only on the film—they’re inside you.

The essays are all well worth the read. You'll get a deep insight into growing up as an evangelical Christian in the Midwest in the 90's and early '00's. Christian rock music, Christian colleges, Christian megachurches, Star pastors, Christian amusement parks, Creationism, the Apocalypse, Hell-- all that and more gets discussed. And don't think that just because the author has walked away from her faith that the things she says in the book are slanted against religion or against people of faith. Really, like Christ's words in Matthew chapter 23, the essays are more just slanted against shallow faith and hypocrisy. I find the writing to be resonant and relevant for anyone seeking an in depth look at the state of American Christianity today.

"What does it mean to be a believing Christian and a Midwesterner in an increasingly secular America where the cultural capital is retreating to both coasts?"So begins the back of the book description of Interior States, but it does not take the reader very many pages to see that only the geographic part of this description fits Meghan O'Gieblyn. She frequently describes herself as a non-believer, so the promotion of this book starts off misleading potential readers. That might not be enough to reduce the book's star rating, but there are other problems that make this not really a recommended read. As often happens with essay collections, there is a lot of unevenness in the writing here, but the overall tone of the book is really quite sad. O'Gieblyn notes from the very beginning, in her preface, a discouraging picture of the Midwest she lives in. She indeed is unhappy with " the challenges of living in the Midwest when culture is felt to be elsewhere." That along with her ongoing negativity about her growing up years and her lost faith doesn't give the reader much hope or encouragement.Of course, not every book is uplifting and inspirational, but in the end, there seems little reason to have read this. One gets the feeling of reading someone's personal journal that really wasn't ever meant to be seen by anyone but the writer. Her essay, "Contemporaries," gives a depressing summary of a meal with friends that she then extrapolates to a larger "we.""I think: Nothing has changed over the past half century. We are still hopelessly coupling, still confiding to one another at overpriced restaurants our private moments of transcendence. When people look back on our era, they will make no distinction between then and now...In the future, the whole swath of later modernity will call to mind the image of people eating delicacies and talking about the state of their souls--ust as, when someone mentions the medieval period, we picture people toiling in ditches." Perhaps I am being too critical, but this essay in particular ends in no hope at all. She quotes a writer friend, "All of us have a lie that we hinge our entire lives on." And at the end of the essay, she is still sharing that "My dreams are rife with shadows and menace."There is more, including a critical piece on Alcoholics Anonymous and "Midwestworld" that starts with an anecdote where she shares the description of teachers and aides assisting children at the end of the school day, children "all of the boundless and boisterous and shepherded by adults who bore the unexpreeive fatalism of people who work professionally with children."In the end, "as it turns out, the material world is every bit as elusive as the superstitions I'd left behind." Sad conclusion. I would hope that the day will come when the author finds something more worthwhile in life than this, but, for now, Interior States is really not worth the read.

This isn’t The Joy of Cooking or How to Cook Everything or even those recipes that Bon Appetit claims are easy. This book has a very specific target demographic and that demographic is people who occasionally or frequently fail at feeding themselves. Some people can’t imagine that, and this book is not for them. But if you spend a lot of time on deadline, have run out of cope by the time dinner rolls around every day, forget to eat when you’re working on something, and/or just actually hate cooking despite how terribly trendy it is...this book is for you. This book is delightfully straightforward, not to mention free of the moral judgements that we like to hand out about people who opt out of cooking in North America. (You know, a lot of countries have shops all over that sell cheap, tasty, and healthy prepared food, so it’s not like we HAVE to be like this, but I digress.) There’s no implication that you’re somehow less worthy for not wanting to cook or for using prepared ingredients. There’s no recipe-blog-style reading through hundreds of lines of quirky domestic backstory here, either, and no talk of “guilty pleasures” or “sometimes foods.” Fletcher trusts you to figure out what you’re willing and able to eat by yourself, which I really appreciate.I’d particularly recommend this for people who sometimes find themselves too thoroughly exhausted to even decide what to eat. (And also for feeding a partner when they are too tired/depressed/sick/etc. to figure out what they want.) Fletcher is there to talk you through it, like a particularly good Tumblr friend. I mean, I’m pretty always up for Dips That Are Meals, for example. Right? Or if not, Things on Toast. It’s not that I necessarily need *recipes* for these, but there are times when I desperately need someone else to come up with a suggested combination of things. These recipes aren’t aimed at any particular diet; there aren’t a lot of meat-based recipes, though. The author leaves it to you to decide whether and how you want to make a recipe vegetarian or diabetic-friendly or gluten-free or whatever (or go the other way and load up a recipe with cream cheese and bacon). In my experience, most people who need those variations have their own preferred way of doing things. If you’re a beginner to a restricted diet, you should probably get familiar with basic substitution and cooking methods first.Anyway, look, this book is a for a very specific type of cooking. If it’s what you need, then you should definitely get it. This book is my new bff; in fact, I’d be here for a sequel. The only thing that could make this book better would be a random recipe chooser.

Or dont have time, energy or spoons...Its not a cookbook, per se, but suggestions for things you can make to feed the body when the soul is tired. This book gives you permission to care for yourself, feed yourself with without judgement and in this day and age, I think that's important. It reminds me a lot of how I felt the first time I read How to Cook A Wolf, by MFK Fisher and that alone is worth you checking this out.

Look, I got depression. Most days I'm fine. But some days it's a struggle to eat at all. This book is great for meal ideas on days where I can't find the strength to brush my teeth. Also pro tip: Chia seeds are high in fiber and contain iron. Just sprinkle it on whatever!

For those of us who sometimes just need to eat a food--a quick, simple, uncomplicated food, this cookbook is perfect. Fletcher's tone is wry, funny, and understanding of those of us who don't have the time or energy for complicated cooking or long food blogger remembrances of granny's authentic recipes. She gets right to the point in a way that can really dispense with a lot of the stress many people feel about cooking. Well worth the low price just for the asides about how "future you" can prepare and freeze some items in advance or use other items in multiple ways. I will definitely be using this book when I'm out of ideas and/or time!

Buy this book if you're a college student who needs easy meal options, if you're newly living alone and aren't good at feeding yourself, if you don't have access to a lot of kitchen equipment, if depression or other mental issues interfere with your ability to feed yourself, or if you're so tired and/or busy that you forget to eat / don't feel like you have time to think about food. Buy this book as a gift for anyone in one of the above categories. This isn't a book that wants to teach you how to make healthy foods from scratch or live on $1 a day, but it is a book that wants to keep you alive and help you get enough fuel inside your body to keep you going until such time as you CAN do the healthy fresh foods, and it will give you some better options to do that than you can probably come up with on your own if you fall into any of the above categories. Also, it will tell you how long the food you do prepare according to its recipes stays safe and good in the fridge, which I wish every cookbook would do.

It recognizes that I'm tired when I get home, cooking is not my joy and it talks about how to make a REALISTIC edible meal in under 10 minutes. No crafting involved. No dicing and parboiling and pan sauces. This is about how to take frozen veg and precooked rice and make something decent with food you probably already have.Don't buy this if want to cook. Buy this if you are like me. You don't want to cook. This is how to survive that lack of interest with some decent food and not a lot of time or energy.I think this quote summarizes the whole theme of the book "If you’re super motivated, start this by making mashed potatoes in whatever fashion you prefer. If you’re like the rest of us, buy pre-made mashed potatoes, or use the mash that’s been sitting in your fridge for the last three days, ever since your mother forced the remains of Sunday dinner on you. Whatever."Seriously. Fletcher gets me. I'm about the easy way.

Misha Fletcher's cookbook is a godsend. I am not necessarily the target audience for this cookbook (I love to cook and bake!) BUT I also have depression and on the bad days? Well, even as much as I love to cook I just simply can't. On those days this book is a life-saver, because it (a) gets me to eat, and (b) it starts the spark that makes me think "hmm you know what? since I'm in the kitchen why don't I make brownies/cookies/start that soup in the slowcooker." which gives me a need push out a dark depression spiral and back towards realizing life is worth living.

First, I'm a fan of the Iron Druid Series by Kevin Hearne, I've never read any of the works in the other two series by Delilah S. Dawson and Chuck Wendig. I think that probably makes a huge difference in how they came across to me. Some stories just aren't good to jump into when you're doing it blind."A Prelude to War" (Iron Druid Universe) by Hearne - Loved it. It looks back some into the past and some into the future of the coming war. I loved the character development on Granuaile's part and the step forward in Atticus' attempt to head off disaster. I just hope that people don't miss out on this story and start the next book without reading it, because I think it's too important to be missed in the story arc."Not my Circus, Not My Monkeys" (Blud Universe) by Delilah S. Dawson - It was okay, but I have to say I felt a bit lost in this universe and it wasn't quite working for me. So many animals/men are of the Blud (or vampire) types that it's a wonder that anyone with human blood has survived. (Bludmen, Blud horses, Blud rabbits... the mention of Blud Bunnies gave me a weird flashback to Monty Python "Holy Grail" and the attack rabbits. It was a weird moment and didn't do the story any favors.) I'm not sure why the main character, Criminy Stain, seemed to be taking orders and living in a world of humans when he's clearly more powerful than they are. How can Bludmen be very rare if there are Blud animals all over the landscape? How rare is the Magic he can do? Maybe if I'd have read some of the series it would make more sense. But Stain wasn't someone I cared about much, so I don't think I'll get to ever reading that series. He was interesting, but not a lot there to draw me in."Interlude: Swallow" (Miriam Black Universe) by Chuck Wendig - I spent a lot of time lost in this one when it started. I'm pretty sure that fans of the series will be interested in it, but coming in blind it took some work to figure out what exactly was going on as it unfolded. The flow back and forth through time didn't help me much, but I think I got it all by the end. But Miriam is just too dark and too foul mouthed for me. In some characters, constant bad language in their speech and their thoughts may denote strength, and a bit of tempting fate to call them on their rudeness. If done at other times it can be funny and help throw in some lighter moments when things are dark. But it quickly became too much for me, as it made Miriam seem more angry, rude, and broken than strong. I felt sorry for her, and what ever she lived through to get to this point, but I didn't like her or care to read more about her.So the three stars are for the Iron Druid, which I enjoyed. And Thanks, but no thanks, on the other two universes for me. Not from these samples.

Let me start out by saying that the only reason I got this e-book was because I got the next Iron Druid Chronicles for review (Staked) and that book is prefaced by Hearne telling you to go back and make sure you read the story A Prelude to War in Three Slices. Honestly this makes me a bit grumpy because if a novella is that important to the overall series then it should actually be in the next book...either as a prelude or included as an optional story to read in the back of the book. Telling your reader they have to go and dig up some remote novella available only on ebook sucks. So why did I go and pick up Three Slices? Well I really like Delilah Dawson and this included a story about how Criminy Stain gets his circus. Also I have been wanting to read something by Chuck Wendig for for quite some time so this was a good opportunity to get a sample of his writing. So in the end it all worked out well, but I am still a bit grumpy about being coerced into reading this.As with any anthology this was a mixed bag; overall though the stories are pretty good. I am going to write mini-reviews for them all below. If you are a Iron Druid Chronicles fan you definitely want to pick this up for the story that is in here. If you are a Criminy Stain fan (or even if you aren’t) Dawson has a very well done and entertaining story in here about how Criminy Stain got his circus. I can’t really say much about how the Wendig story relate to the Miriam Black series because I haven’t read the rest of that series. All of the stories have to do with tyromancy, which is divination by cheese. Yep, a bit odd...but that is why this collection is cleverly titled Three Slices.- A Prelude to War by Kevin Hearne (3/5 stars)Atticus is traveling to Africa to meet with a diviner there to find out how to take out a group of old vampires and finish the war he seems to be in with them. Meanwhile Granuaile is trying to figure out how to get Loki’s mark removed from her arm. The two stories alternate and are a bit choppy. This is not a novella that makes any sense unless you have read the previous books in the series and is honestly more of a necessarily evil to find out where things are going than really entertaining.- Not My Circus, Not My Monkeys by Delilah S. Dawson (5/5 stars)Criminy Stain finds himself on the run after accidentally killing one of his volunteers. Then he runs into the deadly and enchanting Marissa in the forest; she leads him to a new circus which Criminy is determined to make his own. This was a wonderfully entertaining novella that stands well on it’s own. It also gives some great background on how Criminy Stain gets to where he is in the first Blud novel. I love this world and the characters and Dawson’s writing style is incredibly easy to read.- Interlude: Swallow by Chuck Wendig (4/5 stars)This is my first time reading Wendig’s writing and any of the Miriam Black stories. His writing style is very raw and gritty, it reminds me of Richard Kadrey or Lucy Snyder’s writing style. It’s very adult with a lot of swearing and crude sexual references. I actually enjoyed it and am interested in reading more about Miriam Black. The story didn’t stand alone very well. Miriam is trying to find out how to get rid of this curse she has (which we never get backstory on) and ends up dealing with this serial killer (again a bit vague on what was going on there). Still it was an entertaining and quick read and made me want to pick up the first Miriam Black novel to see what it’s all about.

This is the only book I've found that addresses the history and evolution of spinning wheels in a comprehensive way. Because this is a book about the spinning wheel, and not spinning in general, she only touches on the spindle as the beginning of the history of the wheel. Baines writes in an accessible style, beginning with the earliest known evidence of spindle spinning, carrying through to the history of the wheel, it's changing form and rapid geographic spread from the orient to the middle east to Europe. Baines also explores the reasons why wheels evolved in different ways in various locations, and in a fascinating chapter, discusses the influence the hand wheel had on emerging mechanical spinning- and vice versa. Interspersed with this is discussion of the social elements: the lives of spinners, their place in a changing economy (spinning and weaving was an industry long before the development of mechanized spinning and weaving). There are many illustrations, all discussed in detail in the text. A fascinating book that helped me to understand the origins of my craft, and to feel kinship with spinners in past centuries.

I have used this book for years as a supplement to Baines's Book on Spinning. It is an excellent resource. Another amazing resource is her book on Linen and flax. She is a treasure and a resource.

I like the cover with a picture of a woman in colonial work clothes. Tells me what is in this book covers the history of the spinning wheel. I love to spin and like to know the history behind the product.
