Nice Simple RecipesMany of the instant pot recipes I look up online call for more ingredients than I will ever have in my pantry, but this has so many great recipes without having to make a trip to the spice store.

Many good recipes. Most Instapot cookbooks contain recipes we would never eat. This one is different.

Great book!

Absolutely loved this book! The recipes are great and it's really brought me and my wife closer together!

I am new to IP cooking; recipes all end with cook times, do not show how to depressurize and end cooking.

The cookbook is fine. It looks like it could offer some really good ideas. The reason for 4 stars is that some of the pages were still connected at the bottom. They are perforated and separated easily with a slow, gentle pull using my fingers, but not something a person should need to do. Probably 1/3 of the pages were this way. Other than that, it appears to be a good book.

I bought this for my mother for Christmas. She lives alone and when she cooks she still cooks for 6 people! She is thrilled to have something with smaller recipes and they are delish!

I bought this for a friend who cooks for herself only and we had a good laugh over the cover. Recipes were really good. So don't judge a book by it's cover.

The Summer Game (Bison Book), by Roger Angell

Review

“This collection of essays takes you into the heart of baseball as it was in the 1960s, conveyed with humor and insight. . . . The key here is that Roger Angell is a stunning writer. He is also in many ways a highly cerebral one and yet utterly down to earth—a writer who can translate the nuances of the game with perfect clarity.”—Tim McCarver, The Wall Street Journal (The Wall Street Journal)“Page for page, The Summer Game contains not only the classiest but also the most resourceful baseball writing I have ever read.”—New York Times Book Review (New York Times Book Review)“Only Angell’s love of language surpasses his passion for baseball. . . . A splendid book.”—Newsweek (Newsweek)“A decade’s worth of meditations and observations . . . searching for the Higher Game, the cosmology behind each pitch, each swing, each ‘shared joy and ridiculous hope’ of summer’s long adventure.”—New York Review of Books (New York Review of Books)"Fans know that Angell, fiction editor for The New Yorker, is one of the heavy hitters of baseball writing. Dating back to 1977 and 1972, respectively, these are two of his finest collections. Essential for public and academic libraries."—Library Journal (Library Journal)

From the Inside Flap

"Page for page, The Summer Game contains not only the classiest but also the most resourceful baseball writing I have ever read."—New York Times Book Review. "A decade’s worth of meditations and observations . . . searching for the Higher Game, the cosmology behind each pitch, each swing, each ‘shared joy and ridiculous hope’ of summer’s long adventure."—New York Review of Books. The Summer Game, Roger Angell’s first book on the sport, changed baseball writing forever. Thoughtful, funny, appreciative of the elegance of the game and the passions invested by players and fans, it goes beyond the usual sports reporter’s beat to examine baseball’s complex place in our American psyche. Between the miseries of the 1962 expansion Mets and a classic 1971 World Series between the Pirates and the Orioles, Angell finds baseball in the 1960s as a game in transition—marked by league expansion, uprooted franchises, the growing hegemony of television, the dominance of pitchers, uneasy relations between players and owners, and mounting competition from other sports for the fans’ dollars. Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente, Brooks Robinson, Bob Gibson, Sandy Koufax, Carl Yastrzemski, Tom Seaver, Jim Palmer, and Casey Stengel are seen here with fresh clarity and pleasure. Here is California baseball in full flower, the once-mighty Yankees in collapse, baseball in French (in Montreal), indoor baseball (at the Astrodome), and sweet spring baseball (in Florida)—as Angell observes, "Always, it seems, there is something more to be discovered about this game."

Roger Angell can paint images with his prose. This collection of essays is an ode to the game he loves. It is filled with insights into the game and the emotions it generates in us and instills itself in generations of families. There are so many wonderful metaphors-too many to mention but I'll pick a few. In describing a slowly emerging 64 Mets team, "Stengel has called on Jerry Hinsley and two other rookie pitchers Bill Wakefield and Ron Locke for spot duty. They have responded with eager gallantry-often of the kind once displayed by Eton sixth-formers taking to the air against Baron von Richthofen."And while watching the 65 World Series after the Twins went up 2-0, he made this observation: "The fans around me were all laughing and hooting,'it's all over now'. I hope he meant the game and not the series. After I had visited the clubhouse and heard sandy Koufax's precise, unapologetic, and totally unruffled analysis of the game, I came away with the curious impression that the Twins with two straight victories, were only slightly behind in the series."And this about my personal baseball idol Willie Mays during a Giant/Dodger division race, "Watching him this year(1971) seeing him drift across a base and then sink into full speed, I noticed all at once how much he resembles a skier in mid turn down some deep pitch of fast powder. NOBODY like him."And then there is the last chapter especially the last page which brought me to chills. Read that chapter and the last page and you will understand Angell's love affair with this game above any other.

A classic, and one of the best baseball books ever written. Every season from the 1960s is covered in an outstanding essay by author Roger Angell. Angell introduces us to players, teams, and some of the on-field strategy that the casual fan never thinks about. He takes you behind the scenes in some cases, but not in a tabloid sort of way. This is about the game as it was played on the field. Angell observes the hapless New York Mets during their infamous 120-loss season (1962), for example. St. Louis catcher Tim McCarver, now a TV analyst, gives Angell (and the reader) insights into his position as it's played on the major league level -- things fans never consider. This was the decade of Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson, Roberto Clemente, the aging Mickey Mantle and the young Tom Seaver. In short, a wonderful, informative look at the game. One of my favorite books on baseball's colorful history, right alongside Lawrence Ritter's The Glory of Their Times.

I loved Angell's comparisons of action on and off the field with other images which are so a propos but very original thoughts. I give this book the highest possible 4-star rating only because I gave 5 to a very few others which moved me slightly more. I am speaking of The Glory of Their Times, Crazy '08, and Boys of Summer. This book is in this same very major league.

When I first read this book more than 25 years ago, it changed my whole view of baseball. A second reading has confirmed that Mr. Angell's gifted writing is a pleasure to read. The stories of the players of my youth are as good as anything I've read. Highly recommended for baseball fans.

Such a fantastic book. It’s so well written that it keeps you engaged the entire way through. I read this on vacation at the beach and was slightly annoyed every time I was forced to pause from it. Great book and I look forward to buying Angell’s Other baseball books!

Pure chance -- and luck -- brought me to Roger Angell's books. I was shopping for baseball titles as gifts, and clicked on Summer Game in the search results. First, I am a literature student, who loves good writing. Second, I am a huge baseball fan. Third, I'm a girl. On the basis of previous reviews, I purchased Summer Game and Five Seasons, for me AND for my step-father. From the very first page I was blown away. Angell's vocabulary is tremendous; his use of metaphor phenomenal. Baseball really is poetry. I've had several eyebrows raised in my direction on the train as I laugh out loud at his descriptions of players, fans, owners, botched plays, you name it. Nothing and nobody escapes his notice. A bonus for me is suspense: most of these essays pre-date my arrival on the planet by a good 5 years, so I'm too young to know the outcome of a particular World Series or playoff round. Within 2 days, I'd ordered the rest of Angell's baseball books on amazon. They will join the complete works section of my collection, which includes Shakespeare and Jane Austen -- to name a few! Don't hesitate to buy these books for yourself, or for a friend. You'll heartily enjoy them!

The best book ever written about big league baseball in the 50's, 60's and 70's. (my era)

Considered a classic and justifiably so, this book is the result of a truly great writer examining the best sport. Like "Ball Four," it's something to be re-read and enjoyed every few years.
