Fantastic reference for snorkeling on the Big Island. Used an earlier edition for a trip 10 years ago and bought this edition for a trip I just returned from. Snorkeled 5 straight days. Too many sights/recommendations to visit in a week. Great/comprehensive intro info on equipment, tips, safety, reef live, etc. Comprehensive. Perfect directions to snorkeling sights. Perfect descriptions of sights. Book is a must if one is snorkeling on the Big Island, HI. No need for expensive snorkeling excursions. Use this book and enter from the shore (for free or a few $5 beach fees- depending on the site).My only tip - whatever site you are snorkeling, get there between 7:30 and 8:00am, before the beach fills. My personal favorite places to snorkel - Wai'alea Beach (69) P. 78-9; Makaiwa Bay (Mauna Lani) P. 92-3 - well worth the scenic, easy 3/4 mile walk in from public parking; and Honaunau Bay (Two Step) P. 168-9.Both editions of this book have been invaluable to me for my Big Island trips! Big "thank you" to the authors!

This book was so helpful on our recent trip to the Big Island! We visited many of the spots mentioned in the book, and the fish pictures were great for identifying all the fish we saw! Not to be missed are Two Step and Kealakekua Bay. My only disagreement was Hapuna Beach, which had abysmal snorkeling, and was rated as an "A" in the book. The book was published in 2012, so some of the information may be a bit dated.

I generally do not like to buy a book that I have not been able to thumb through and/or read or skim through a few pages. Doing so gives me a feel for how readable a book is, how it is laid out etc. I made an exception in the case of the Malinowskis' Snorkel Hawaii firstly because I had not previously come across a guide book that covered snorkel sites of the Big Island, and secondly because this book had so many good reviews - I bought the book unseen just based on its description and positive reviews.I was not disappointed. The book is very well laid out and easy to read. Someone who is just starting out or who has relatively little snorkling experience will likely benefit from introductory information in the book on how to choose snorkel gear, safety tips etc. More experienced snorklers can easily skip through this material or skim through it if they like.The priceless info contained in the book however is detailed, honest and accurate yet concise descriptions of each potential snorkel site on the Big Island, how to get to each site, which parts of such sites are best bets for the best snorkling, entry points into the water (in locations where it may not be entirely straight forward on how to get into the water safely), suggestions on which sites and which areas of snorkel sites are suitable for beginners versus experienced snorklers (and explanations why), water conditions at the various sites and locations within the sites. There is also typically a description of how suitable each site is for swimming - this can be useful in selecting snorkel sites/beaches to visit if you snorkel but someone you are traveling with doesn't. A picture or two of each site is typically included, which is certainly a large contributing factor to the book's readability.I am looking forward to purchasing and using the other books in this series for the other Hawaiian islands. Bravo Judy and Mel Malinowski!

I'm so glad Hubby found this book. I have spent the week reading through it and planning some new places to try snorkeling next week. We always do Two Step and Beach 69, but there are now several other places we are hoping to check out.I love the authors humor throughout the book! Like the fact that putting your hand in a reef crevice is a great way to spend an afternoon getting stitches!Very nice book. Would thoroughly recommend buying if you are heading to the Big Island and like to snorkel.

I have owned three copies of this book. It is my bible for snorkeling on the Big Island of Hawaii. One copy I gave to a friend. One got wet from going to the beach so much and I bought the third before heading to Hawaii for two months this winter.It gives excellent directions and comments for ALL the good snorkel spots and includes pictures of fish you are likely to encounter.It is written in a folksy style that gives one the impression that the author really knows the waters and has a great love for Hawaii.I highly recommend this book to novices and experts alike.

Overall good for telling you how to get to and from the beaches, providing a list of options. Only problem...author described snorkeling spots using an A-F type rating. I guess it’s all subjective because some of our favorite spots were places the author rated B vs A.

We just returned from 10 days on the Big Island where we spent almost every day snorkeling. The Snorkel Hawaii guide was a great resource for planning our snorkel stops before and during the trip. We wanted to snorkel from shore rather than paying for a boat trip and this guide was very helpful identifying the best beaches for what we wanted to do. We really wanted to see picasso triggerfish, so we followed their recommendations of best beaches to see these beautiful fish. We were not disappointed! Before the trip, we found the reviews very complete and appreciated the color photos since we are more familiar with Caribbean fish. During the trip, we used it to adjust our daily stops based on wind and weather conditions. A great book that I highly recommend for anyone going to the Big Island to snorkel.

I just returned from a trip to The Big Island, and this book was a fantastic resource. The detail in the book is exactly what you'll experience. Since beaches are tricky to find on The Big Island, the detailed instructions on how to get to them, what the water is like, the hazards, the different fish, even the sized of the fish, is a great time-saver. Donna Leon is the best. I am astonished to have gotten to these Inspector Guido Brunetti so late in a life in which mysteries play a large role; I admit to someone mentioning her ten years ago. Without rival, the best. Each one of these has different strengths and weaknesses. Overall, Brunetti shares his marvelous family (with a wife who teaches Henry James), his cynical co-office workers, his dreary boss, who is concerned about image and personal accomplishment. Before reading Leon, I thought I loved Bosch, Lyncoln Ryme, Alex Cross, and many others. BUt Guido gives us not only his wonderful, cynical, honest and intensely -on the path to truth-Brunetti, but also his Venice, the same magnificent historically present Venice in each book, where we learn a little more about urban issues, challenges, problems and the ways of its residents--against the onslaught of tourist visitors seasonally. You cannot go wrong with any in this series.

All of Donna Leon's Guido Brunetti books rate 5 Stars from me. Guido's sleuthing and resolution of one or more crimes is a recurrent theme that shares the limelight with Guido and Elettra Zorzi's deft handling of Vice Questora Patta and lieutenant . Guido's meandering through the streets introduces one to many of the wonderful Palaces, Churches, hospitals, neighborhoods, that make Venice the world class city we know today and its magnificent history. We are introduced to Murano, Burano, Sant Erasmo and other adjacent islands, as well as Mestre and the mainland north and west of the city. Food!! If one is interested in Italian food, each book describes the fresh food that is brought home to cook, and a number of Italian dishes that Paola prepares. For further exploration of these dishes, Donna Leon's cook book might be just the thing. Add in discussions of local and national politics and the whole is a sumptuous feast for the senses. Thank you Donna!!

As always in Donna Leon's novels, a murder mystery has a Hero in inspector Brunetti, whose humanity contrasts with the corruption that is commonplace in beautiful Venice, but is also intermixed with the good in its beauty and family life. The dark side of the culture where greed and duplicity lurk, result in the chain of events culminating in the murders, which Brunetti and his intrepid and ingenious Secretary are called upon to solve. It is this understanding of complex human emotions, and the society in which he lives, which define Brunetti,s skill. These novels are true to life. Like all true masters they achieve their insights while also captivating the reader in its thrall. This is entertainment of the highest level.

Totally enjoyable 2002 episode in the Brunetti series with ample portions of all that we most love about it: running observations on the city of Venice; frequent dialogue between Brunetti and wife, Paolo; full participation by Signorina Elettra; an intricate plot; inclusion of juicy bits about art treasures; an insightful running account of WWII Italian history; plenty of moral indignation and social commentary about the state of Italian institutions, American eating habits and physical condition and an ending that produces a modicum of justice.In sum, a fine read that will please first timers to the series as well as the stalwarts who haven't missed a single one. One caution: "Willful Behavior" is a 2010 reprint of the 2002 original and is, therefore, not a new book. It may have been published originally in the UK under a different title.

There is nothing wrong with this mystery novel. The characters are clearly drawn, the mystery perfectly adequate, and yet I just couldn't make myself care. I enjoyed the interjection of Italian words and setting. There were the usual typos found in some Kindle books, but that wasn't enough to put me off. I think it boils down to the fact that the book felt like I was watching it unfold from a great distance like a film with great potential and B actors. I wasn't in the midst of events nor in the inner workings and struggles of the characters. Emotional connection was just missing. It has much to recommend it and others might find it compelling and engrossing. You might want to give it a try.

I am a fan of Donna Leon's Commissario Guido Brunetti's police history series of books having read the majority of them thus far. I like the subplots of the life of his familyshe took me around the streets of Venice again and with family and going around the streets of Venice Italy. Willful behavior is a good story. The focus is on Claudia Leonardo and her questionable grandfather's past. I like the way Ms. Leon brings Brunetti's wife Paoloa into the murder mystery. When Paola's young student Claudia is murdered brunettes he investigates its and uncovers shocking details about the grandfathers passed tied to Nazi collaboration during the second world war the very few Italians want to remember. Historically it's an interesting read and will keep you guessing throughout.

Wilful Behavior is among my favorite of Donna Leon's Brunetti series. She has a wonderful way of weaving Italian history and commentary on the very Italian-ness of her characters. In this novel, some of the greed and plunder of the spoils of World War II are at the core of the development of the case. Too, we find out more details of the mysterious past of Paola's father, the count. In each book, the main characters reveal more of themselves. Vianello, for instance, is being fleshed out much more and even Brunetti is impressed as he discovers the sympathetic nature of his favorite. A wonderful story of love, respect, and honor. Five stars from me.

I found this to be one of the better Donna Leon tales in that it was never obvious where we would end up.Characters were well developed with some displaying complexity. To learn about the still lingering nostalgia for the Mussolini days by the veterans was very interesting and worrying. Particularly as the present ultra right wing tendencies in Europe will need to be watched and countered. Leon's descriptions of the layers of Venetian and Italian bureaucracy and self interest are most interesting. Not a good place to live without connections and money.

This was recommended on a book list I came across to teach young children about kindness and compassion. It's something that I definitely want to teach my almost 3yo. I always read reviews prior to making purchases and this book had great reviews so I went ahead and purchased.While I definitely appreciate the message and the artwork was cute, I found the story a little bit odd. A soon-to-be Mama chicken gives a pig one of her eggs which then causes this chain reaction of kindness and happiness all over the farm. At the end, the pig returns the now hatched chick to the Mama chicken and everything comes full circle. I loved how all the farm animals were thoughtful about how they could be kind to each other and really appreciated all the many different ways they paid kindness forward - both by the giving things and the giving of their time. The only thing that bothered me was the soon-to-be Mama chicken giving one of her eggs away at the beginning and getting back one of her chicks at the end. Am I reading too much into it? Perhaps.Also, my daughter doesn't enjoy reading this book and she likes most of her books which is ultimately why I took my rating from 4 to 3 stars. I think she would have enjoyed this when she was a little bit younger (6mo-2yo).

My 3 year old son loves this book. We've read it every night since we received it about 4-5 days ago. I researched kids books about kindness and this one came up. Hopefully he is taking in the lesson. It's a sweet, fun, easy to read book

WE LOVE THIS BOOK. Great, simple lesson in growing up to be kind. Also a good gift for a kid that is becoming a brat....you know we all have that friend with one of those kids.

I really like all the examples in this book of how to be kind. Story is a little odd (spoiler alert :-))in that hen gives an egg and ends up getting a chick back in the end. but a child may find this funny. I just love all the ways it shows how to be kind. By giving flowers, by playing your friends favorite game, etc. Each animal that has something kind done for it, thinks that is great and goes on to do something kind for someone else. Haven't seen any other books this good about kindness for really young kids.

A wonderful way to teach children how to be thoughtful and giving; especially useful if you have a toddler whose current favorite word is "mine!" like I do :)

Very sturdy, heavy board book. So cute but simple for a pre-toddler.
