Review

''Are the buttons on your remote worn down from tuning to SportsCenter? Then Tim Forbes' It's Game Time Somewhere is the book for you. ... But Game Time is no gimmick book; Mr. Forbes' canny and probing observations about America's love affair with sports . . . elevate It's Game Time Somewhere to the status of real, in-depth journalism. Miss the ball game tonight and read this!'' --Steven Pressfield, author of ''The Legend of Bagger Vance''

Tim Forbes has an eye for a story we don't see very often. This is so much more than just a "sports" book. You'll meet people who love sports and compete for the pure fun of competition. No preening comic book athletes, no zillion dollar owners whining about how tough their life is without a new stadium. As a former pro golf executive Forbes brings a sharp eye and an even sharper sense of humor to the business side of sports. I was touched by the stories of the World Kickball Championships, his own attempts at curling, and how age doesn't matter when you love a sport. It's Game Time Somewhere is a great first novel. Don't be surprised if you too go searching for your mitt after reading it.

It’s Game Time Somewhere, by Tim Forbes has him—watching 100 events, 50 sports, within a year. But why? This is the story, and the journey to get there. That’s why you’ll keep turning the pages. And that’s why you’ll nod your head in agreement. Not every dream ends when you wake up. Some people are blessed to continue the dream. Tim Forbes was blessed enough to drop out of the corporate world and step into his dream world. It’s Game Time Somewhere: How One Year, 100 Events, and 50 Different Sports Changed My Life, relates this dream of Tim Forbes, who left his successful corporate job and lifestyle to pursue his love of sports.Tim and his wife, The Bird, make a deal. The deal was that Tim would support The Bird, while she went for her MBA, and then the roles would reverse. The Bird would support Tim, while he left his corporate job and pursued his dream—working in sports. The tale is the story of what happens to Tim. Starting at Professional Golfers Career College, to “sports society experiences", the reader is taken on tour in making life-changing decisions, to disenchantment slowly evolving, back to capturing excitement. As an adult looking at his childhood's favorite sports, they seem like love—better the second time around?Forbes writing style is fun. His descriptions, surprises, disappointments, and disgust, are portrayed vividly. The reader will feel. He calls the commercials during TV games Television Interruptus. Watching the games as a spectator at the real event, he can pick out the wasted time the game is forced to play around, just to accommodate the sponsors' commercials. At least at home, you can switch channels, but at the event, itself, Forbes cries out, “What to do? What to do…? I’ve got it! Let’s break up the monotony with a beer and a quick fistfight!”The Little League World Series had such long breaks that “Several of the players completed puberty in the time it took to get the back underway.”Forbes landed a job in golf, after Professional Golfers Career College. It soon became a “job.” After this job, Forbes took up his “sports walkabout” seriously—50 different sports. And the sports weren't just the big ones: football, baseball, soccer, etc. He visited 100 events from car racing, swimming, tennis, kickball, cross country, curling, etc.He learned that being a sports fan wasn't as much fun as it use to be, and it just may be the fans’ fault. But you will see, reading further, it will depend on the level of the sport. “There is an undeniable ugliness in the world of spectator sports.” Money spoils the fun.The amateurs, the second-tier, the no-hyped, fringe sports, were where the spectators found the most satisfaction. “Smaller just may be better.” Who knew?Somewhere from packed stadiums to counting heads, the spectator atmosphere changed for the better. The smaller group lived and died with their athletes. These second-tier sports had die-hard followers. They took their victories and defeats to heart. And get this—they also took their good attempts to heart.Another surprise was learning about the transition from paying athletes to play, to athletes paying to play. What a concept! This epiphany came when Forbes realized that The Bird paid an entry fee to run a marathon. Now here’s proof of an athlete loving her sport. She actually paid for the privilege to play! There are many lessons, in It’s Game Time Somewhere. Tim Forbes learns to love a new sport—lawn bowl; he makes new friends, he has new found appreciation for some hard working, and deserving athletes, and he has written a book. A good book, that relates how a man learns a lot about himself, while journaling the process.

Full disclosure, I am not a rabid sports nut. That said, I feel that Tim Forbes and I are somewhat kindred spirits. Everything he said about being disillusioned with corporate life resonated with me deeply. When he took the plunge and gave it all up to do what he loved, I envied him.As the story progressed I started to get a sinking feeling. I have long thought that the BIG sports in America were broken. Money has taken over and as Tim told of his experiences I understood but felt bad for him and for myself. I did not sign up for a diatribe on what is wrong with sports in America, and I had the idea that was what I was in for. It was, but there was a light at the end of the tunnel and I was very glad I kept reading. When I read a book like this, once I am done I always find myself wondering if I would like to have dinner with the author. If I can say "yes" to that question then I count the time reading as well spent. Upon finishing this book I can only say that I would love to have dinner with Tim Forbes and if you give yourself the chance to stick with him through his entire journey, you would probably say the same.

It's Game Time Somewhere is one of the best new books on the market. After ten years as a pro golf executive, Tim Forbes was losing his passion for sports. Like a lot of people who work in sports there's no time to indulge in any sports much less your favorites.Forbes hit the road for a year to attend 100 different sporting events and turned it into a seamless tribute to the games we love. Tim's experience in pro sports means his criticisms come with credibility. But even more impressive are his stories of sports fans who still hit, throw, swim, wrestle, run, and bike simply because it's fun. It's Game Time Somewhere is a great read. Pick it up and you'll soon find yourself getting off of the couch and back into the game.

I enjoyed It's Game Time Somewhere, as an e-book. Being a lifelong sports fan, I could relate to waxing and waning fanaticism over the years, wanting to be a part of the game, and savoring the excitement and nuances of attending different types of events. The initial focus on golf was interesting, even if jaded. The author's rants against the PGA and ESPN were eye opening. The timeline of the book was a bit confusing at times. I didn't always follow the lapses into the "you know what I'm talking about" tone.Although I didn't read the blog that I believe led to this book, overall the book is cohesive and delivers the promised sports lovers adventure.

Both funny and touching, It's Game Time Somewhere chronicles a journey during which the author rediscovers his love of sports, particularly amateur sporting events where people do it just because they love it. Give it to the sports fan in your life.
