I was outlining a book proposal when I found "Traction." My proposal first explained that product development gets easier, faster, and cheaper every year, so startups no longer fail because they can't build their product. Instead, startups fail when they hit the marketing wall.According to The Economist (2014 Sep 13), "marketers say they have seen more change in the past two years than in the previous 50."According to the Harvard Business Review (2014 July-August, p. 56) "In the past decade, what marketers do to engage customers has changed almost beyond recognition....we can't think of another discipline that has evolved so quickly."It can seem like marketing is getting harder each year, but actually in some ways it's getting easier and cheaper, e.g., Facebook's targeted ads. What's needed is a guide to how marketing is changing.Unlike the zillions of e-books about Facebook marketing, Twitter marketing, etc., my book would cover and compare all marketing channels. Unlike the e-books, my book would include case studies of real companies. Unlike the marketing textbooks, my book would focus on tech startups, not on dog treat bakeries and corner grocery stores. Unlike the books that say you'll get rich if you follow their formula, my book would say that marketing is changing rapidly now, and the marketing plan that worked even a few years ago won't work now. I proposed teaching entrepreneurs instead to make small-scale experiments, see what works and what doesn't, and continuously evolve their marketing.I scrapped my book proposal because "Traction" is that book. There are some things I would add (and perhaps Weinberg and Mares will in a second edition). My proposal included case studies of both success and failure. "Traction" only has successful case studies, leading to a sense that every marketing strategy leads to success. Including both successes and failures would lead to a framework for what channels work for what types of companies. E.g., viral social media likes may work for a microbrewery, but not for colonoscopies!Points I like about "Traction":- Entrepreneurs should spend 50% of their time on product development and 50% on marketing, but product development sucks up all your time. It's more satisfying to add a new feature to your product than to spend your limited capital on a marketing test that completely fails. We feel comfortable developing our products but feel clueless marketing them.- Integration with Lean Startup. That was the book I proposed a few years ago, and Eric Reis beat me to it!- How much traction (downloads, press coverage, sales) investors want to see before they invest increases every year, as marketing gets faster and cheaper to some startups.- Every entrepreneur has to hand sell the first few customers.- Building a viral marketing campaign will take one or two engineers three to six months! I.e., viral marketing doesn't magically happen just because your product is so cool.Stuff that's missing:- Celebrity endorsements is a 20th channel.- A chapter about market research, e.g., why you should ask open-ended questions instead of closed-ended questions.- The PR chapter needs a section on finding journalist contacts, se.g., whether to use the Meltwater or Cision databases.- Tradeshows are about having outgoing, enthusiastic salespeople, not about having a flashy booth.

I've been head of marketing and strategy for startups and interesting brands for several years, and this was the first book I've ever read that is actually useful and something I frequently reference in channel, strategy and overall marketing brainstorming sessions. Why? Because it provides a comprehensive view of contemporary best-practices in marketing, without all the old baggage and fluff to which many marketers still cling. Today's marketing means you're actually responsible for revenue. If you're still doing the kind of marketing that focuses on activity and top-of-funnel vanity metrics (like how many unsuspecting tradeshow attendee badges you zapped thanks to your TV giveaway, or passing a huge seemingly impressive number of crappy MQLs to sales so you can hit your quotas), then please don't waste your time reading this. You won't get it, or you work somewhere where you can't actually apply this learning due to all the internal risk-adverse forces working against you. For everyone else who believes in the new of ways of marketing (basically, marketing without all the BS), this book and others in the series should be in your e-reader or physically sitting next to your laptop right now.

Traction was extremely helpful for me as a budding entrepreneur and author. In the book, Weinberg and Mares lay out 19 different "traction channels" everyone looking for their next client should consider. Furthermore, they challenge you to give a hard look to some of the channels you would normally dismiss without a second thought. Why? Sometimes the channel you least thought would work turns out to be highly effective.Something I appreciated about this book was how much objective research went into it. The list of traction channels wasn't something they pulled out of their backside, but rather something that resulted from extensive interviews with entrepreneurs and business people who have experienced real-life success with them. The only reason I didn't give Traction five stars is because many of the sections lacked the practical advice needed to put these strategies into action. To that extent, I felt like it left me hanging in quite a few areas. Not every reader is going to know who to contact for a PR campaign, how to get started with SEO, or the best way to setup a sales process/team. If you are looking for very specific information like this, realize that this book won't deliver it to you.Now to be fair - each of the 19 channels probably deserves its own book to describe such detail, and I don't think this book was intended to be an encyclopedic guide to implementing every channel. This book was surely intended to be more of a top-level overview. To that end, it was great for calibrating one's understanding (from a leadership/executive perspective) of each channel. It inspired me to think outside the box with my own business and projects, and I still found a lot of value in it.Anyone new to the startup world or who plans to start their own business deserves to read this book - and probably also the Lean Startup by Eric Ries. Some have said Traction and the Lean Startup go hand-in-hand, with Traction focusing more on customer acquisition and Lean Startup focusing more on product development. The build-measure-learn concept is present in each, however, and is a clear theme for all new business owners.Once again, would certainly recommend to anyone new to the startup world or entrepreneurship. It's a quick and easy read with many good ideas.

Simple, but worthwhile book. I've re-read it a few times. It's basic point is that there are (at least) 19 channels to gain traction (customers) for a product or service, and we tend to only look at a few we might be familiar with. The second point is that after traction in one channel is achived, for additional traction, a different channel or tactic is likely needed for the next phase. Detailed discussion of the different channels and examples of their use in various organizations. Definitely worthwhile for those who are doing product marketing, at any stage of an organization's growth.

Enjoyed the book, but it’s status as an “official” or “unofficial” biography seemingly makes little difference. Most things are just common knowledge about the group.

Visit hanson.net please! This is probably the most popular book put out for Hanson fans. Of course, if you're a Fanson, you will have to have it. We Fansons collect anything having to do with the band.

Who wants to know the true story about how Hanson became who they are today? This book is the best way to teach you the basics, written by Jarod Gollihare, who was a friend of theirs (also a musician). It's a GREAT account, leading you through Isaac, Taylor, and Zac's love and devotion to music and what it took for them to reach their dreams. The book is well written and truthful, as well as exciting to read and full of great pictures. I absolutely recommend it for any fans of the band!

I had to order this book from Borders because I ordered it in July, 2000. I received it the day before the Hanson concert in Tulsa. Yes, I was at the kick off concert for the "This Time Around" tour. It wasn't, at all, easy to get tickets to the Tulsa one, but I did it. I also went to the Norman, OK one the day after Zac's 15th b-day. They were both excellent. The Norman one was much better than the Tulsa one. In just 3 months time their concerts had changed a lot. Definitely for the better. Just as they've improved in their live shows, their albums keep getting better and better. I loved this book for the pure reason that it's Official. They're friends with the author and they had imput on it. All of the other books, you never know. If only, these other authors actually had imput by Hanson, not to mention, permission. Oh, FYI, I'm nowhere near being a teeny bopper. I'm 29. Yes, I live in Tulsa. No, I've never met them. The question that people ask me the most is "Why do you like Hanson?" I just say, "They're the real thing." What you see is what you get. There's no hidden motive. That doesn't happen often, in this world. Needless to say, I read the book the day that I got it. I couldn't put it down until it was done. There's so much to learn and so little time.

I really, really like this book! Especially cuz I love Hanson 2 death! I swear, I'm one of their biggest fans. Anyway, this book is really good to set all the Hanson rumors staraight. And I love the younger pictures!! The only reason I gave this book a 9 was because it didn't have obvious info I'd love to know, such as their favorite colors, and which hand they write with. Oh well...I guess we'll never know!!! I love you Zac!

The Hanson book is great! It starts out in the Early years of Hanson. There are some very cool young pictures of Hanson. It talks about where they grow up and how they entered the music business. When they git there first fame. How they work with other writer (they worked very little) writing the songs for Hanson. It show how hanson struggle to the music business and did very well.

This book is the best book ever!!! It is all official...so you know all the info is true. The author did a very good job of putting this together!!! I would recomend this to any fan of Hanson

The Last Gentleman Adventurer: Coming Of Age In The Arctic, by Edward Beauclerk Maurice

From Publishers Weekly

Maurice was a 16-year-old boy from a struggling British family when a missionary from the Canadian Arctic paid a visit to his boarding school in 1930. Impressed by an accompanying film about life in the frozen territories, Maurice immediately sought employment as an apprentice with the Hudson's Bay Company and was sent to a remote trading post, where news from the outside world was often limited to a short weekly radio broadcast. He was so young, the local Inuit tribe nicknamed him "The Boy," but, as revealed over the course of this charming memoir, he was gradually able to win their trust and admiration. Eventually placed in charge of his own post, Maurice—having already learned the Inuit language—became increasingly involved in the daily lives of the local tribe members. His accounts of their dramatic romantic entanglements are understatedly amusing, as is the dry observation that he himself has been selected by one of the women as a suitable mate. Maurice, who died in 2003, recounts his youthful adventures in a graceful style reminiscent of the great 20th-century explorers. Though his tale is somewhat more subdued than their exploits, it proves just as engrossing. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Many of the old books of this genre I read are written as if the natives are children or savages who need conversion, education and enlightenment. Edward Beauclerk Maurice impressed me with his acceptance of the culture and beliefs of the Inuit/Eskimo people among which he lived for several years. He learned their language and lived among them, sharing their food, clothing and homes, meanwhile growing from a teenager into a man. Maurice recounts his years as a clerk at a Hudson Bay trading post with so much honesty, self deprecating humor and respect that you can't help but like him. Because he was so young (16) when he was first apprenticed to the Hudson Bay Company, he relied on the older men in the village to teach him to hunt, trap, fish and survive. Eventually he becomes a respected man and hunter, but he was reassigned unwillingly to another post every year until his contract was fulfilled.I thought it was sad that he didn't return to the Arctic later in his life, and it's unfortunate that this is the only book he wrote about his experiences. After I finished the book, I re-read the forward by Lawrence Millman. I got a lot more out of it after getting to know the characters and the story.

Of the many, many books I've read involving Arctic expeditions and experiences, this one is one of the best, among the ranks of Gontran De Poncins' 'Kabloona' and Vladimir Albanov's 'In The Land of the White Death.' I found it to have a lot in common with 'Kabloona': while the locations are rather far, the experiences are similar. 'The Last Gentleman Adventurer' also provides a lot of information about the Hudson's Bay Company, which is a fascinating chapter in northern Canadian history. At the time of the documented experiences, this young man was essentially alone (in the beginning among 2 others) in one of the most remote outposts on earth. His interest and respect for Inuit life develops and broadens throughout the book, and in his adventures he meets many different characters. What is delightful about this character is that he sees the Inuit with respect to his own morals, ethics and upbringing, but without judging them. He spends a number of years in Pangnirtung and moves down to Frobisher Bay. Curiously, his last year (alluded to in the novel to be spent at Southampton Island) was not documented in the book, and I am unsure of why.I found his relationships with the Inuit people in this book to be very inspiring; his encounters with the often harsh world around him allowed him to grow and adapt. While frustration was often present with one situation or another, he left his post at Ward Inlet with an incredible love and respect for his Inuit friends; while warned in the beginning not to become too wrapped up with "those people," it is the curiosity and willingness to learn that makes this novel, 'Kabloona' and also the adventures of Stefansson incredibly interesting. While whaling and exploration often exploited the talents of the Arctic people, there are few memoirs of people who sought to learn and survive with their knowledge.

A compelling narrative about the experience of a very young man from the U.K. going to work for the Hudsons Bay Company in the Eastern Arctic during the Great Depression. Life was tough and harrowing, and yet rewarding in terms of unique experiences and warm relationships. It brought back some memories for me regarding my experiences in the Eastern, Western and High Arctic during the Seventies and early Eightes....

This was an amazing book. I just loved it. I have read so many adventure, biography and history books. But this one filled a completely different notch. I wish I had words to explain how I connected with his story. I am not implying I am a gentleman or explorer. It is a reflection on his writing. I recommend this book to everyone that would like to see a bigger, better world.

Have you ever wanted to be an adventurer? But, did not cherish'getting your feet wet' on a milder note, or be subjected to somethinga bit more dangerous to ponder? The last gentleman adventurer Edward Beauclerk Maurice has, in myopinion, given the reader of this extraordinary book the uniqueexperience {in the comfortable armchair} of living the exhilaratingbeauty of the Arctic Realm. His captivating memoir puts us there! Why did he write only one book?Dag StombergSt. Andrews, Scotland

I absolutely loved this book and the author's writing style. I found my self slowing down the reading as a reached the end of the book because I did not want his story to end!! Highly recommended!!

Excellent book! Made me feel like I was there!

This is beautifully written in the matter-of-fact tone of a good friend telling you his story. The author has a wonderful, warm, curious, and self deprecating attitude that brings the people and place to life. The lifestyle and culture at the time of his tenure in the Arctic as a very young man was still very close to pure subsistence living and I found it fascinating.
