From School Library Journal

Some kids seem to plow through injury and pain, while others weep at the merest affront. Here, early childhood educator Green, hoping to create a culture of resilience through play, recognizes that injuries associated with play often involve parental education. "Learning about physical experiences precedes more abstract learning in all domains," he argues, citing that children must pick up and move blocks before they can count them. Issues of safety, parental overinvolvement, and fears of litigation have all tempered how parents perceive development through play, and the author warns that the joy, growth, and learning that come from physical activity are being lost in our current culture (e.g., "safety first" has become "safety should be maximized, no matter the cost"). He explains how early childhood play is the perfect time for risk-taking and supplies productive tools for discussing injuries and placing concerns into their appropriate context. Although slightly dry in presentation, Green's teaching is spot on. His goal of giving children "the experiences of learning and joy, challenge and triumph, and the ability to enter the world, with all its challenges and obstacles and setbacks, in the most positive way possible" is holistically delivered. Here's to horsing around. VERDICT Recommended for education collections.—Julianne Smith, Ypsilanti District Library, MI

"Green's teaching is spot on. His goal of giving children the experiences of learning and joy, challenge and triumph, and the ability to enter the world, with all its challenges and obstacles and setbacks, in the most positive way possible; is holistically delivered. Here's to horsing around." —Library Journal“This guide provides the tools and strategies for creating a culture of resilience, including families in the process, and keeping safety in mind.” —Learning Magazine"This book is a joyful, playful exploration of the very nature of young children emphasizing their need to run and jump and play and take risks and try things out and the ways that adults can encourage physical play, allow for risk-taking, and still provide a safe, nurturing environment." —Gaye Gronlund, author of Individualized Child-Focused Curriculum"An exceptional resource for teachers everywhere who are struggling with the question of how much physical risk to allow or promote in their programs, this book will go a long way toward restoring developmental common sense to our views on children's needs for risk, physical challenge, and autonomy in their play to build, in Jarrod's words, a 'culture of resilience.' This is a timely and important book." —Todd Wanerman, author of From Handprints to Hypotheses and Including One, Including All"What a courageous and inspiring book! Jarrod Green tackles the sometimes confounding and controversial issues for teachers around physical play and the constant decisions that they have to make about what is safe and what is appropriate, essential risk. Teachers help create a childhood for each child and Green guides teachers as they navigate this often neglected area of curriculum. Green makes a compelling case for not only the role of physical activity in building resilience but how it can enhance and expand children's self-esteem. All teachers will find this book thought provoking and supportive and their students will greatly benefit from having teachers who better understand their physical needs." —Belann Giaretto, Executive Director of Pacific Primary"I'm OK! should be in any collection strong in child development titles . . . This book provides teachers with specifics on assessing risk and assigning challenging, growth-inducing play and is based on the author's decade-plus experience building resilience concepts into activities." —Midwest Book Review, The Education Shelf

Great resource for understanding where to draw the line on safety vs. risk around childrens' play. Jarrod asks though-provoking questions about how and when we established our understanding of what safety is and challenges us to develop that concept further for the benefit of the children in our lives. As a soon-to-be parent, it helped me understand the complexity of the physical classroom and the tremendous focus teachers and aides must have to maintain a great learning environment. I feel I know better questions to ask when I am choosing a school and how to better play with my child. The information is well-researched and highly accessible and above all practical and kind. I would heartily suggest this book as essential reading for anyone who has any contact with children.
