Review

"This is an exceptionally well-written, well-researched and well-illustrated book on designing and creating therapeutic landscapes. Rarely before has this topic been so thoroughly documented in one easy-to-read book that provides essential information to landscape architects, garden designers, healthcare workers, therapists and patients." (Linda A. Irvine, Landscapes/Paysages Magazine, OALA, FCSLA, ASLA; Manager, Parks and Open Space Development, City of Markham, Ontario, Canada) "Taking time to get in tune with your surroundings and learn to love nature has proven a therapeutic process for many, including Naomi Sachs. Sachs is Founding Director of the Therapeutic Landscapes Network, and has been able to translate a personal passion for nature into a new book, co-written by Clare Cooper Marcus, which just came out this week called Therapeutic Landscapes: An Evidence-Based Approach to Designing Healing Gardens and Restorative Outdoor Spaces. The new publication has been long-anticipated and referenced as the "single most comprehensive and authoritative guide to designing healing gardens and restorative outdoor spaces." First, given his long history of publications and credibility in this area, when Roger Ulrich writes the foreword to a book, there is a pretty good chance that the book itself will be extraordinary. And Therapeutic Landscapes is extraordinary. There is one significant detail missing from the book description above (i.e. the material lifted from the back cover) - I was very surprised to find about 300 beautiful photographs and illustrated designs (all with the exception of one or two are in full color) perfectly nestled and numerically captioned to accompany the written text. The photographs are of such high quality, and each is appropriate to the educational components being described in each chapter. There is an average of about 1 beautiful image per page, and in a book about the therapeutic value of nature and design with nature in mind, this visual is so important - the book comes alive and the material is more relevant. The written content itself is a precise match with its description - highly researched! It was obvious before even finishing the introduction that this project involved gathering and synthesizing a tremendous amount of cutting-edge studies (as well as historical documents) from a wide variety of medico-scientific and design publications. There are many texts that have attempted the same; however Therapeutic Landscapes excels because of the way in which the information is presented -1. Just the right amount of historical background to provide a frame of reference2. Makes the scientific case for evidence-based design with just the right amount of depth without being too technical3. Explores the general and specific considerations and guidelines for design4. Each chapter is referenced - how valuable!5. International settings are discussed in detail6. Beyond the photographs, case studies bring the text to "real world" application7. Chapter contributions by noted experts (e.g. Teresia Hazen on patients and personnel as stakeholders in design) and Marni Barnes on how to actually plant and care for a therapeutic garden)The back cover states that "Therapeutic Landscapes is an indispensable resource for landscape architects, other designers, students taking related courses, and healthcare administrators". It fulfills this promise, but is actually much more than that - it is an invaluable resource with very broad appeal, an instrument which can be displayed as exhibit A in changing the way we think about the environment!

Therapeutic gardens, also sometimes called 'healing gardens', have gained a lot of traction in the world of landscape design--particularly in the health care field. But what is a healing garden, really? Some would say that every garden might fit the definition. This book leaves no stone unturned (so to speak) in its exploration of the question. It has been useful to me in my work as a landscape designer. Indeed, there are several theories about the way to create places that promote positive feelings, particularly for people in various challenging circumstances. The authors explain these theories and present a great deal of research, some done by them, more of it done by others in a variety of settings worldwide. They offer numerous actual examples and the experiences that have arisen from them. The book is more academic than casual but is easy enough to read. At this price point, it is probably best suited for thelandscape professional or a classroom setting. I recommend it highly to anyone who is going to design therapeutic spaces, would like to understand the power of landscapes to affect feelings or behavior, or who is interested in the principles of place-making in general.Â

I would give this book an extra star if it were more complete in a couple of areas. For me having a list of plant material that would be best per type of garden would be 'a nice to have'. I wonder if such a resource or book is available? Next, I know this is a an evidence based approach to healing gardens and it does explore some possible reasons why gardens work the way they do but the book omits some key points to explore. Two Eastern cultures (at least) have been using the natural environment and gardens to promote a healthier life style, Ayurvedic medicine (in the Indian subcontinent) and classical Chinese medicine have been doing this for thousands of years. In particular Chinese medicine in conjunction with the understanding of Chi and energy flow have been using the landscape to promote healing for centuries. Some will even try to compare EBD to Feng Shui garden design principles. They are just about the same. Integrated EBD is about 30 years old and Feng Shui is over 3000 years old. The Chinese seem to have known something for a long time before that and it is only recently that our Western minds are starting to figure it all out. What about the 'evidence' of how a garden makes us feel? Our own thoughts and feelings should be evidence enough for just us? Given this, it would be great to see a book and an extra layer of how healing gardens may work and not just rely on Western thinking. It's not the whole story by far.

This book, written by two longstanding authorities, is beautifully produced, eminently readable, and full of useful information. The emphasis on evidence is commendable, and will help transform this field into one that is rigorous and data-based--and ultimately, one that will have demonstrable impact in improving people's health and well-being.

Essential up-to-date information culled from a vast body of research. Incredible resource for anyone interested in creating or promoting quality outdoor environments in a variety of settings. The case has been made (ie there are scores of rigorous studies to back up what we know on a human level) and presented here so beautifully. The next challenge is to create a strategic funding plan.

Got my copy two weeks ago and I am already incorporating ideas from the book into my projects. The chapters are broken down by types of gardens and clinical needs and the case studies provide real world examples of the theory and approaches described in the book. A must have for anyone designing, building, or associated with Healing and Therapy Gardens.

Wonderful mix of photographs to illustrate discussion, photographs that inspire, and solid research data. Very good at laying out the research findings in a compelling way.
