After the first dozen pages, I was thinking, "The writer's apparently a bright guy. He knows how to write. He's a Stanford Man. Isn't he aware of the misplaced modifiers, the run-on sentences, the repetitions, the lack of formal structure, the back-and-forth leaps in time?"THEN, after the first thirty pages, I finally realized that Joel Rogosin has written a truly original memoir -unconventional, unselfconscious, unpretentious- in which he carries on a one-sided conversation with the reader. No stilted phrases. No attempts at chronology. No pretense. No baloney. I felt engaged, interested, entertained, informed. I recognized the unvarnished truth. I was intrigued by the people and the changing panorama. I was provoked to say, "Hey, that's darned interesting! Never thought about it that way before, but..."I didn't find a false moment in the book. Fascinated with this journey through showbiz and, more important, this revelation of a life lived with joy and compassion and love, I finished feeling that I know Mr. Rogosin and his unconventional and loving family. I found myself comparing MY aunts and uncles and parents with his. I was provoked into considering relationships I hadn't thought about in years. And, since I know many of the people Mr. Rogosin mentions in the book, I was struck by how well he captured them, never seeming to "name-drop," never holding back his thoughts, seemingly enjoying telling us his story. He takes no cheap shots. And he fixes no blame. And he laughs at himself. And he does not shy away from his obvious adoration of his wife, and his pride in his children, his friends, and those wayfarers who passed through his life never to be seen again.I found myself laughing, reading portions aloud to my wife, sending quotations to friends, agreeing with so many of his observations, marveling at the breadth and depth of his experiences.A great, entertaining, informative read!
Bravo. What a pleasure to read. I loved the naturalvoice in the writing and the non-chronological orderof the chapters. This could easily be titled "Living ALife". A full and rewarding life springs from thepages. I'm amazed at the memory for detail andenvious of the rich relationships that cement andsurvive the achievements. I was surprised at thenumber of people with whom the author and I have crossed paths without ever knowing it. In many instances it was a personaltrip down memory lane for me and prompted my recognition of how little I think about the past. That's something I should correct. On that note alone it was a learning experience and a worthwhile read.
At last, a memoir from a man who has spent his life in "the biz" and hasn't spent his retirement bashing it. Rogosin has written a warm, frank, funny book that is obviously heart-felt and fun to read.
