This cookbook is just brilliant! I don't know which sauce to try first. So excited. This is great!Seriously, my baked chicken is desperate to get saucy!

I am a cookbook addict and have so many cookbooks so I now take cookbooks from the library. I tagged so many recipes from this book for future use that I ended up buying the book

I enjoyed reading The Make-Ahead Sauce Solution cookbook since it provided great ideas to be more efficient in the kitchen. For years, I have done make-ahead and freeze meal preparation on the weekend to make weeknights easier. What I haven't considered is that I can also make weekend sauce batches, and that will also make cooking with time constraints less of an issue.Every sauce recipe is accompanied by different meal ideas. An example in the Asian Inspired section is a Green Onion Ginger sauce that could be paired with bokchoy, tofu, chicken, shrimp, pork, or beef. How easy to plan a shopping list and put together good meals when everything is so well organized. I have made and frozen the Thai Peanut Sauce(and paired it with the suggested pan-fried shrimp), the Parmesan Leek Sauce(with chicken), and the Cheddar Ale Sauce(over macaroni). All the meals were quite good and I would make them again. There are so many more sauces that I plan to try and with multiple pairings for each one, I will be able to refer to this book for a long time. The pictures are gorgeous and I just found this to be a well thought out and useful cookbook. The sauce recipes have 6 or less easy to find ingredients which was another plus for me. Sometimes(OK a lot of the time), I just want to cook a good meal, not a Top Chef-worthy, 4 Michelin star meal.The only thing missing for me was nutritional information.I received an e ARC from Storey Publishing through NetGalley.

The Make-Ahead Sauce Solution by Elisabeth Bailey is a fabulous cookbook as the author has presented a smart solution on how to fix meals on the fly. The author starts off her cookbook by writing about the magic of sauces, how to prepare them, and how to freeze them for later use. She includes an explanation of how to pour the sauces into freezer storage bags (which she recommends using to save freezer space) so the process is a simple one. There are photos illustrating this procedure.Each sauce recipe includes meals you can make using the recipe. The All-American Barbecue sauce gives the following meal suggestions:1 cup sauce per one pound of chicken. Serve with French fries and steamed corn.1 cup sauce per pound of pork. Serve with grits and green salad.1 cup sauce per pound of beef. Serve with biscuits and Caesar Salad.1/4 cup sauce per sandwich. Spread sauce evenly over hamburger bun. Top with cooked burger and slice of cheddar cheese. Serve with roasted mixed peppers.The author includes directions for preparing a base for you sauce. Here you will read about how to cook pasta, rice, baked potatoes, tofu, chicken, shrimp and scallops, white fish, pork and beef. You will also find information on how to prepare sandwiches, and soup too.Towards the end of her cookbook you will find a section called More Flavor Enhancers where you will find recipes for compound butters and flavored salts.Finally, you will find a printable meal planner to help you prepare your weekly meals.Overall, this is a well-written cookbook that will help ease meal preparation while creating tasty meals.Recommend.Review written after downloading a galley from NetGalley.

Along with making sauces for our household, I also plan to make single batch servings to fill my 19-year-old son's freezer that he uses while he's away at University - a little taste of home while he's away.While the pictures and easy-to-understand instructions make prepping these sauces and bases easy for new home cooks, more experienced cooks may find the explanations redundant or oversimplified, but the wide range of sauce recipes will still entice experienced cooks. Unfortunately, and surprisingly, the nutritional information for each sauce recipe is not included.Overall, this is a great addition to the home cook's cookbook library. PARENTS AND TEACHERS - no profanity or graphic sex. References to brief adulterous relationship. Description of children living in abject poverty during Victorian era, one violent accidental death. Recommended for kids 12 and over.I loved this book! It took a while to get going (that's why I only gave it four stars) but once I was hooked I read each page with relish. This is a mystery set in modern times, but it flashes back to multiple historical time periods and is told in more than one voice. The reader is in on secrets before the protagonist, but very little is actually given away until the end.One of the most entertaining things about this book was how I found myself constantly speculating about "what happened" often thinking I had figured a few things out. Then I'd find out I was completely wrong - I loved that cat and mouse aspect of the writing. The conclusion was very satisfying.My only criticism of the writing style would be that the Victorian era characters seemed like Dickensonian Wannabees.Overall I would recommend the book to readers who like mysteries, puzzles, and a little romance.

This is a solid book. It can be hard these days to find a novel that isn't predictable or derivative of another work. I truly enjoy novels that can surprise and shock me. This was one of them. I've had this book for about 5 years, now, and I've read it 3 times. I also recommended it to my Mother-in-Law who listened to the audiobook.The first time I read it, I stayed up the better part of two nights to finish it! Ha, I just couldn't put it down! I really wanted to see what was going to happen next, and the author did a great job of keeping me in the dark! There were a few things that I caught early, but some not until they were written right out!I loved the fairy-tales that were included with this novel! I can't believe she wrote those! They were completely unexpected, super magical, and allowed you to dive deeper into certain characters and understand their reasonings and motivations. Such a unique and awesome idea.I don't want to give anything from the plot away, as I personally hate when reviews do that! I will say that I've lent it out to friends, and reccomended it as well. I look forward to a couple of years from now when I "forget" enough and it will be a fresh read again. It gets better every time.

Well, Ms. Morton, you are, indeed, a storyteller! I've read the Lake House and now this book, and I loved both stories! I enjoy the way two very different centuries are woven together to tell this tale, and the characters are full and real.....I, as you can tell, am NOT a professional reviewer, just a book addict who wants to say thank you for sharing your talent!

What a decadent, delicious read! This is the second of Kate Morton's books that I have read and I must have more!I savored every, single page of this book. Would it be presumptuous of me to say that perhaps this is the best book I have ever read? I'm not sure, but it surely comes close.The story is mysterious, interesting and provoking. I could perhaps predict what may happen next but I would be wrong. There was only one detail in this book that I thought to know before the reader will have found out but somehow, I believe that Kate wanted it that way and even though I knew ... she uncovered the clues so deliciously that it felt good and right. Don't worry ... you will feel the sensation of validation and I certainly did. Really ... so delicious!The characters in this story were vivid, wonderful and very believable. I wanted to hate the oppressors! They were mean, vindictive, cruel, self-serving and completely without morals. How could you not love a character like that who's sole purpose was to enrich a story?! And yet, I could feel sympathy for them because they were conditioned by their environments and could only behave the way they were trained to do so.There were endearing characters in this story that you can fall in love with only to have your heart ripped out because of the circumstances that uncovered flaw and destiny. I rejoiced with them, fell in love with them, savored their innocence and understood that life's circumstances invite one to measure up, take charge or coward and withdraw in the anguish. You will always be invited to root for the underprivileged.Oh yes, a juicy read that enriches the readers life and the tickle of intimacy and creativity that invites the reader to acknowledge a longing for a life of adventure and mystery. Yes ... a little bit of history laced in the pages of this book that elude to a time long ago and happenings that the reader may not have been present for but could only imagine.Indeed, this is a book of escape where one can savor the tastes of a fine meal where the flavors dance on the tongue and travel to the stomach only to nourish the body that seeks meaning and purpose. Definitely ... a must read!

I enjoyed the book but, as other readers have noted, it was confusing at times with the back and forth between time periods. Several times I thought I had the mystery all figured out but didn't get it right until the very end. That's a good mystery! Good characterizations that were well fleshed out. I'd recommend this book and plan to read more by Kate Morton.

I enjoyed The Forgotten Garden. Morton’s beautifully descriptive writing brings the past to life as it has in her other books. But also like her other books, the story follows the same formula. A present-day narrator discovering a mystery in her family’s past and attempting to solve it. This version wasn’t quite as successful because the narrators’ voices were very similar. I enjoyed Eliza’s portions of the story more than Nell’s and felt that Cassandra and Rose’s portions were a little lackluster in comparison. Though it is a bit rambling in places and I felt the ending was predictable, it was an entertaining read.

I have read most, if not all, of the books written by the talented Jennifer Weiner. I just want to clarify that before I begin my review.The story begins with both of our main characters as young children, meeting under unexpected circumstances in a hospital. Before they meet, we get to know a little about Rachel. Immediately, my heart goes out to the struggling, slightly spoiled yet simultaneously mature, little girl. Andy, by contrast, is the opposite of spoiled. His circumstances are less than ideal, as he grows up conflicted about himself.Fast forward, we learn more about Rachel and Andy. Naturally, they continue on very different paths- both economically and internally. However, both are diligent and ambitious in their own respects.Over the years, their paths continue to cross. Life continues to happen. As a reader, I give kudos to Weiner for not only keeping me engaged in the protagonists, but also very invested in the secondary characters.Overall, it was a great read. I finished in one day. Speaking of one day, I would've have given a five star rating, but "Who Do You Love" is rather similar to "One Day."

I don't understand why this book got such great reviews; I couldn't even finish it. The two main characters make no sense. There's nothing appealing about the girl and it's hard to understand why the boy is attracted to her; masochistic maybe. Actually, the book's blurb is a lot better than the book.

I can easily imagine Who Do You Love by Jennifer Weiner being made into a romantic movie. It’s got the necessary ingredient: a couple who seemingly appears to be destined together having met as kids who continuously come together over the years only to be separated and continue on their lives while secretly still pining for each other. Not really know how good of a movie it would be, but as a book it was a great read from one of my favorite authors.Being a Weiner fan for a while now, I’ve come to expect well-written stories with charismatic characters. Who Do You Love is no exception. From the start, it was so easy for me to get engrossed into the book. While the plotline sounds familiar (like I said it can be another Hollywood romance movie), its content and story were not banal. Weiner’s couple, Andy Landis and Rachel Blum (“it’s bloom like flowers, not blum like plum”), were the heart of the story and by necessity needed to be charismatic and sympathetic figures whose story and journey through life, whether together or separately, were those who we would want to read. Suffice it to say they were, due to Weiner’s ability to create characters, like Andy and Rachel, who are likeable but still human. Add to that, she had them seem so different on the surface, Andy being a fatherless biracial child living with his single working mom on the lower economic ladder and Rachel being a Jewish princess spoiled and protected by her parents due to being born with a heart defect and thus being constantly in and out of the hospital, but at their core had more in common than anyone would believe. Through their budding relationship and beyond, you see how they see themselves, the world they live in and their place in it. While the bigger story is a love story, within in it is an exploration of finding yourself and of what (or who) you truly want. It’s so obvious Andy and Rachel have a unique connection and truly love each other, but it was interesting to see how it is that they end up separated. And the thing I enjoy about that aspect is how it’s never cut and dry. There are no clear “bad guy” to blame. They each had their part to play in the time they have lost and their own idea of what it is to be together. You’re not aware of what you had and lost until time has passed and you have the perspective that comes with time and experiences. The love was never in question in this book. It’s always seems to be whether they are at the right place and mindset in their lives to actually fully realize they were meant to be together.While the book doesn’t have the humor which is found in her previous books (it’s the main thing that made me a fan of her books), the charm and sweetness is there. The drama never gets to the point where it weighs down the book and Weiner manages to retain a certain innocence in her story by her writing. She was able to make Andy and Rachel charismatic and likeable so as to make you want to find out how their story unfolds and inevitably ends. The question of who you love seems to be an easy one to answer, but as the book shows, it’s never as clear cut as we believe/hope it to be.

Jennifer Weiner, whether I love her books or believe they are meh, always captures the essence of her characters. This novel is no different. She may pound it out and repeat herself, but I am confident in her ability to develop a character that makes sense.In this combination romance genre novel, Ms. Weiner explores the rich, spoiled girl with a congential heart problem and the mixed-race, poor but handsome and talented boy. Rachel and Andrew meet in an ER where they are both lost souls in different ways.Their friendship and love evolves in a myriad of ways despite their economic and family situations are worlds apart. Andrew must overcome his economically poor circumstances, no money and no father. Rachel is torn between conformity and her passion for Andy. Andy’s pursuit of an Olympic medal, despite all odds, is well written; we become familiar with the day-to-day agony of athletes. Rachel becomes a social worker and we learn there is no easy answer to any of her cases.The parents of these two are very interesting. Lori has secrets and keeps her emotional distance from the son she loves. Her appearance and philosophy are at odds. Rachel’s parents are over protective but her Nana provides a refuge for Rachel with her take-chances attitude.The problem with the story is that the plot became conventional. I knew what would happen to Andy after he reached the pinnacle of his success. Rachel’s miscommunications to Andy leads to the conventional life she really doesn’t covet. Despite it all, I enjoyed the book. Weiner has been a pioneer and I respect her for her skills and courage.

I was reluctant to get this book but it has the same contents as the US edition ....but a better price! Definitely worth the cost. I notice the end of the chapter questions were sometimes in different order but I always doubled checked with my classmates. I still keep this book as reference for my upper division courses. The book was new and it came wrapped in plastic.

This was a required text book, so we didn't have a choice in what to purchase. Passed the class with a good grade, so I suppose this book did the trick!

Having this textbook for my fluids class made me really love fluid mechanics. You can tell that De Nevers really loves the subject too, because the book is actually fun and interesting to read, unlike my horrible wordy Kinetics book. De Nevers has a great writing voice and a good sense of humor; I laughed without feeling embarrassed (unlike with my cheesy, hackneyed Kinetics book).This book does a good job explaining the concepts of fluid mechanics by providing enough background to understand concepts without being cluttered with information.I highly recommend this book. It's been my favorite textbook so far in college.

This is the book on keeping mantids I had hoped to write with Keeping Aliens in 2001 but that small booklet was limited by its construction. This softcover version is more expensive than the hardcover because the paper is much thicker and the premium color print process used is more consistent.

My six year old son loves it. I catch him reading it all the time. We both keep learning a ton of new information from it. There are many great pictures of species we did not know, though the reproduction of the shots is not great. Good enough, but higher quality graphic reproduction would make this a truly beautiful book. My son keeps reading in order to plan for keeping a mantis next spring. We hatched an egg sac last summer, and he already has two waiting for this spring. He also wants to order an exotic species. The book is a bit expensive, but not unreasonable for the content.

A wonderful collection of information in print and photographic forms. Written to be understood by everyone from a young student to the beginning hobbyist to the experienced hobbyist looking to add a wonderful piece of literature to the personal library. The amount of information this book contains is well worth the price. The value of this book is high due to its use as a reference text (needing certain parts at a specific time) or rereading the book as a whole. I will recommend this book to everyone who is interested in its subject matter.

I really was not keen on the price. I wondered if it would be better to just drop fifty dollars in my toilet bowl and call it a day, but the moment I opened up the book I was so happy I ponied up the cash. Typically, I trade books etc. with my friends. This will not be one of those books. I have indexed, highlighted, circled, made notations etc. It is an excellent reference book for both the experienced mantis keeper and the begining hobbiest.There is only one double page that does not have a photo on it. This book is loaded with color photos that expose the reader to the mantises they love and mantises they likely have not seen before. So with two hundred pages of material and only one page without a photo reference, it will make the reader quite happy. The pictures are all color and range in size from wallet to full page. The quality is very good and the binding has held up to two read throughs and I am usually a person that man handles books. When I first saw the book I thought... crap, this binding is gonna spilt, but so far so good.The information in the book takes the reader through every possible aspect of raising mantis, from how the mantis is classified to, nymphs, feeding, ooths, breeding tricky humidity and enclosures. It is full of practical advice and doesn't make ridiculous reccomendations that burst the wallet. Its all very practical.My other worry was that the book would read like a scientific text book from hell. To my pleasant surprise its a fairly simple read although the scientific names will always be tricky but they are very neccessary for the new hobbyist to learn. The book also covers anatomy, health issues, and gives the reader a great overall understanding of species both native and exotic.Another great part of the book was that it outlines the types of feeders one needs to have on hand and how to culture them along with the pros and cons. This is very helpful! There is also a glossory for those of us not exposed to the technical aspects as well as a lengthy works cited for those over achievers that need to read even more.I would highly recommend that if you have the money to spare, get this book. It is not only a great refrence but an interesting coffee table book and conversation starter. Anytime I read it in public, I am asked questions. :) You won't go wrong with this book, pick it up as soon as you can!

Exactly what I expected from this book. Detailed notes on a variety of individual species as well as notes and tips on mantids in general. If you are into praying mantis's you need this book.

This book exceeded my expectations. Very informative on mantid husbandry as well as details on their life histories and behaviors. Nice photography accompanies the material being explained. Mr. McMonigle's book is a must have for the mantid novice or long term enthusiast.

My son likes this book and it has much detail for the enthusiast. I just wished someone had warned me that a female could lay weekly egg sacks. ;)

Great book for learning the different species and handling of these Insects.

Rare things are often pricey. This is a rare find in the (thinly-populated) world of preying mantis literature for popular reading.Being an active mantis hobbyist, my initial concern about any complete work on the subject was either: 1. It would be too academic and boringly dry, or 2. Just the opposite - it would not do justice to helping the reader understand the wonder of these incredible animals. McMonigle's book carefully avoids either pitfall.This book covers every aspect of the preying mantis, written in an easy, friendly cadence, yet just enough technical information to please diehards like myself. And the book is absolutely loaded with four-color photographs - mandatory for enhancing descriptions and anecdotes in the text. This is *not* a textbook. It's focused on the hobbyist who is interested in learning how to keep mantids healthy and happy in captivity and how to successfully breed them.Although I was not terribly happy with the quality of the page paper - it *is* non-glossy, which makes reading, in my opinion, much easier on the eyes. Get this book and go out and find a mantis or two. You'll be amazed.
