This book has become very popular and perhaps that's why it is relatively expensive and somewhat padded with some info most people probably don't want or need (I refer to pretty much everything but the listings of publications and agents). Also, a good portion of the publishers listed do not accept unsolicited manuscripts - I question whether these listings are really helpful. I suppose one could reason that knowing that certain publishers don't accept unsolicited material is useful in a way, but it's not what I'm looking for in the book. I want to know who I CAN send stuff too - not who I can't. Overall though, still a good resource for writers who are interested in researching/finding suitable publishers, publications, and/or agents.

Many times I would look at the information about an agent or publisher only to see there website disagreeing with the book. It turned out to be useless!

I am a freelance writer and I have been published in several niche print magazines. My purpose in purchasing the current Writer's Market was to eliminate the drudgery of doing searches for magazines that accept freelance submissions, uncovering their writer's guidelines and getting the all-important contact names. I was quite disappointed in the quantity, quality and selection of mags that were listed in the guide. The focus seems to be on book publishing - fine for those people who are dabblers and don't need regular writing gigs, but not all that practical for those of us who earn a steady income from writing.

A must have book for any home with writers! This book offers valuable tips and contact info for publishing companies who are looking for content or stories. I bought this as a gift for my mom who is working on several novels. She loved it!

Since every writer has a different feeling or approach to their work, the book will be useful accordingly. Just about all of the essays of tips actually add up to common sense when it comes to writing and selling work.

What an interesting title. It's the "before" that at once catches the eye. While India and Gandhi are inextricably linked, this book derives its principal interest from how South Africa prepared Gandhi for his future role. As Jon Stewart remarked right away when he introduced author Ramachandra Guha on his show, Gandhi is truly a "global" figure in the highest sense of the phrase even in this era of mass celebrities where he stands taller than pretty much everyone else to date. Indeed, whatever may be the future of humanity, and, however and whoever writes it, Gandhi will always be an essential player in that account. In simple, clear, enthusiastic prose Guha charts the evolution of Gandhi from a modest young lawyer with unremarkable speaking skills, one who had yet to find his real métier, to someone who became self-charged with a mission of fighting injustice in his own unique and now immediately, famously, recognizable way. In time to come, he was able to hold the attention of millions when he spoke. From what I gather reading this book, in the second half of the nineteenth century, racism in South Africa was raw and unspeakably vile. How on earth a shy young man coming from a subcontinent away, ostensibly to practice law on behalf of a small Indian community in its diaspora, stepped up to a huge challenge involving the very foundations of justice as applicable to all (if it is to be just) while still maintaining decency, dignity, kindliness vis-a-vis the aggressive Boers and British is nothing short of revolutionary - in the best sense of that word. The thing is Guha (if I understand correctly) suggests that nothing in Gandhi's background probably predisposed him naturally to fight the battles that he met/chose. As the book points out, the "trader caste" from which Gandhi originated were just the kind of folks who abhorred rocking the boat. Profits rather than a desire for justice probably controlled their raison d'être. Guha's challenge is to show how from such a conservative seed bed arose this innovative "warrior" of the spirit and I believe this book does that very well. One critical facet that emerges from the book is that Gandhi possessed not only an abundance of "moral"/ethical courage but, surprisingly, a great deal of "physical" courage as well despite his apparent lack of physical prowess. Thus it is that Gandhi will always stand for me as the perfect antidote to the biggest bullies of his age. In researching source materials for this book, Guha took advantage of newly arrived access to archives from post-apartheid South Africa. That was a great move on his part. I leave with the perception that the greatest of persons are not necessarily born that way. Like the rest of us they too have to swim against the current to make something of themselves. But unlike most of us, time and circumstance evoke an amazing, out of scale, and yet benevolent response from them. Read, you have nothing to lose and much to admire!

As a long time fan of the writer and having picked up this book in Berkeley, I was pleased to read that the book was born in Ram Guha's mind when teaching a course on Gandhi at Berkeley in 1998. The title of this book is not just a play on words after his famous book India After Gandhi, it truly is 550 pages of the largely unknown story of Gandhi starting at birth (1869) and before returning to India after 20 years in South Africa (1894-1914).With a rigor that only Ram Guha is capable of, he arduously reconstructs the story of Gandhi's first 45 years from contemporary records of his years in Porbandar, Rajkot, Bombay, London, Durban and Johannesburg. While earlier works are a collection of writings by Gandhi or secondary works thereof, this book also referred letters written by others to Gandhi, papers of Gandhi's friends and associates in South Africa, records of governments of India, South Africa and England, and archived newspapers and publications of the time. It is a miracle that all these sources were stitched so perfectly in chronology and diligently edited to re-create a deeply personal story spanning his early childhood, relationship with his parents, relationship with Muslim friends from school and then abroad, relationships with his wife and children, relationships with Christians, Jews and Parsis in his life in London and South Africa, besides Hindus from different states, speaking different languages and from different socio-economic conditions. For a pious Indian bania, his work with women was far ahead of his time as well.As an upper-caste Hindu male in the 19th century, you can see his world view shift after finding himself among an oppressed minority in South Africa, discovering the power of his moral character and values, evolving into a leader of the Asiatics (including Chinese), while inspiring white South Africans alike, successfully experimenting with the ideas of passive resistance and satyagraha in the face of strong colonial leadership, before returning to India as "Mahatma" and contributing to the freedom struggle in a decisive way with the same ideas. As an Indian, especially as an immigrant, I could relate to the power of these foundation years - more than half his life - in shaping a personality that we know to be the legend who is practically immortal with what he stands for. I just completed reading this book. Another excellently researched, well written book by this author, though this is a bit of a slow read.I have read several books on Gandhi, with Gandhi (like history of Indian independence), watched the movie. But Gandhi always seemed either one dimensional or a superman. This is the first book that provides depth to Gandhi, at least made him more human to me.It does not diminish what Gandhi accomplished, it adds to it. Gandhi's personality grows in the book. One understands why Gandhi did what he did and how he did it. It has only increased my respect for the man. Many people criticize Gandhi and his methods, his leadership & philosophy. At time this has included me. However I think I have come to the conclusion that this criticism was/is unwarranted. Gandhi was not like Hitler or Stalin who imposed their philosophy on others through fear and repression. He instead showed an alternative way and asked people to follow. He did not stop others from leading. I think India and the world is better off thanks to this. And history shows that his methods take time to get results but overall the society progresses leaving behind little scars, which makes for a better humane world.

This book is fascinating! I knew that parts of cannabis could be used for medicinal purposes aside from pain relief, but I didn't know the extent. This really was an informative and interesting dive into the uses of CBD for healing. I like that this was written by someone with extensive medical knowledge - it lends a layer of validity to the content that might otherwise be missing. I like that she includes the sociopolitical history of cannabis in order to give context for why a book like this is necessary. I found her guide to CBD products to be incredibly helpful and thorough. Although she explains different substances and research in medical terms, she does so in a way that is fairly easy to follow, and I think it adds a lot to this book. It's not just about how to use CBD for yourself - it's about understanding the science and history behind CBD.

I was super skeptical of CBD oil. It seemed like it was just a way to circumvent laws around marijuana use. But I was totally wrong. The first thing this book makes clear is that CBD doesn't lead to intoxication. From there, the author does an incredible job of laying out how different types of CBD oil can help with a variety of different conditions. I was especially interested in the chapters about anxiety and sleeping disorders. I learned some important facts, like the biphasic nature of CBD oil (essentially, low doses and high doses have opposite effects). I also learned about the various ways to ingest CBD and the pros and cons of each. All in all, this has been a great educational read. I feel informed and ready to go to the local CBD store to get started!

This book is a great book for anyone looking to use CBD as medical alternative. It gives the history of Cannabis, how cannabidiol effects the body, what is cannabidiol, is cannabidiol safe, sources of cannabidiol (cannabis and hemp), health conditions helped by cannabidiol, using cannabidiol, how much is needed for a patient, and finding products that can be trusted. I got this book because I have personally seen the difference CBD’s have made for someone with chronic pain. Prescriptions drugs were the only alternative for many years and cannabidiol was looked down upon by physicians and pain management.. The side effects from opiates and other controlled substance were debilitating both mentally and physically. Now much more research has been done and cannabidol is being used in the medical field. If you have considered researching CBD, this book is very informative.

As a registered nurse who is expected to know about medical cannabis and interested in helping people through their serious illnesses or just to know more about medical cannabis as an option, this book is absolutely incredible and a must have. Aside from that, this is one of the most user friendly, honest and well-written books of ANY kind that I have ever read. I recommend it highly. And finally, if you read it in public spaces like I have, don’t be shocked if older people ask you what you think of the book and then proceed to inform you of how they use cannabis for their ailments. If we are to truly care for the people among us who have debilitating illnesses, it is imperative that we know how to use high-quality medical cannabis products to help them. This book can help both the patient and the health practitioner to have a straightforward guide to navigating the daunting paths to recovery using medical cannabis.

It's written in such a way that you really connect with the writer, the plant itself and gain so much knowledge on the value of CBD and cannabis. It's a common misconception that CBD is associated with THC. Happy that the author mentions Israel because they are so incredible when it comes to there break throughs in technology! The questions to ask your doctor section is amazing!! So many people hop onto things without asking their doctor or knowing what to ask, I found this so helpful.

If you are new to CBD oil, this is a great reference. Very helpful in navigating the overwhelming amount of products on the market.

Nice rework of a Grimm's fairy tale. The story is well written, and quite creative in its own way. That being said, I cannot recommend the rest of the books in the series, especially the second book (Enna Burning as there is a scene where she almost gets raped and is manipulated - not appropriate for a pre-teen and young teen audience which would be its readers - I was lulled into comfort with this book and the Princess Academy series and regret not previewing Enna Burning). Buyer beware.

I purchased this book for my 8 year old daughter to listen to as an audio book, and then I stayed up nearly all night reading it myself. It was absorbing and exciting. I (40ish year old mom) didn't want to put it down and go to bed. I did, however, feel the content was too mature for my 8 year old. So, much to her annoyance, I am having her hold off on this book until she's at least 10-12. Highly recommend for that age and above! I look forward to reading more of her series! In this case, I was not familiar with the classic fairy tale of the Goose Girl so it made the story even more interesting for me.

My 13 year old niece recommended this book. I did not expect to like it very much. Much to my surprise, I absolutely loved it . The author writes in a very descriptive way and I was captivated by the story, this book definitely is for old and young alike. I can't do justice to the story, but in simple terms it is about a princess who is betrayed by her maid servant when the princess is on a journey to be married to a prince in another kingdom. Her entourage is killed off and the princess escapes. She finally makes it to the next kingdom ( after many trials) to find her maid servant has taken her identity and is scheduled to marry the prince. Of course the princess is in no way ,shape or form after her travels to claim she is the rightful princess, so she gets a job as the keeper of the castles geece. The princess has a secret. She can talk to swans at home and she could talk to her horse. Then she learns how to speak to the geece. She lives in the servants quartets and learns how to take care of herself and make friends. This is not easy for the princess as she was always a loner and had others taking care of her. She is biding her time and trying to find a way to let the prince know who she really is. I will only say great story, great ending!

I have such an emotional connection to this book because it was my absolute favorite when I was younger and it just brought back so many memories rereading it! 😍😭 Maybe if I was reading this for the first time I would give it a slightly lower rating, because I'm a little more critical but it's still getting that full five stars today! 😂 Honestly my only complaint is that it can be pretty slow at times but still. I adored this and love that ending and just, ASDFGHJKl.Also, real talk, Geric was my orgional boyfriend let's be honest. I need me a man like that! 😂

The Goose Girl is a fantasy based on a fairy tale. It is a slow moving tale at first, and some might be tempted to stop reading in the opening chapters where we are introduced to the excessively timid Princess Ani, a girl taken from her position as next in line to the throne and instead sent on a months long journey through the forest for a strategically arranged marriage to the prince of a larger neighboring kingdom. Ani has the ability to talk to swans and other birds and communicate telepathically with her trusted horse. But Ani is often tongue-tied as she speaks to humans, making her seemingly weak as royalty. On her journey to meet her betrothed she is attacked by those she once trusted, almost killed, and sent escaping into the forest. There she is cared for by a forest dwelling woman and her son, eventually preparing her to enter the city and find a way to reclaim her identity from one who has stolen it. That leads her to months spent as the palace goose girl, tending her flock of geese, learning their language, and in the process learning exactly who she is and who the poorer people of Bayern truly are.This is a beautiful story. I didn't originally think that it would appeal to me, and the slower pace of the beginning chapters still hadn't convinced me that this story would be a five star read for me. But somewhere down the line I ended up falling in love with this book. Ani was a wonderful heroine for this book. Yes, she really is a pushover and weak and uninspiring for a lot of this book. She allows almost everyone to walk all over her. But seeing her transformation from the weak Crown Princess Ani into the stronger goose girl, Isi, and finally taking her place as Pricess Ani, future wife of the prince of Bayern was fascinating to read. It was a journey that should appeal to all girls who have felt awkward and weak and poor spoken as they try to make their way in the world. A lot of us feel that way sometimes, and especially when we are in those awkward years of adolescence. This is a story of overcoming, finding our place, and making a difference in the world. Beautiful.Princess Ani drives this story capably, but the story is enriched by the wide number of supporting characters she encounters in her time as a goose girl. The forest people who befriend her are loyal and kind, willing to sacrifice all for her once they know her secret. Talone ... love him! Such loyalty and devotion. The romance is subtle, but oh so sweet. I couldn't help smiling at the Happily Ever After ending of this story. And once you read how the romance happens, you can hardly imagine that it could have worked out more perfectly any other way. If Ani had simply rode into the palace as the girl who left her kingdom at the beginning of the story she would not have been the strong princess that she became after her struggles throughout this book. Loved it!This is a book I highly recommend to all readers of all ages. It is a beautiful tale with great characters, and it is definitely my favorite Shannon Hale story. Five stars!
