About the Author

Cary Gillett has worked as a production manager and stage manager in the Washington DC area for almost two decades. She teaches production management and stage management at the University of Maryland, College Park, and serves as the production manager for UMD’s School of Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies. In addition, she has worked as a production manager for the Round House Theatre, the Potomac Theatre Project and the Helen Hayes Awards, celebrating theatre in the Washington DC area. She is married to director and educator Bill Gillett, and together they manage their biggest production, Mary Louise. Jay Sheehan oversees the production management and stage management areas for the School of Theatre, Television and Film at San Diego State University. Jay created and leads the Certificate in Entertainment Management Program for the school. As the faculty production manager, Jay oversees all aspects of production for the eight-show main stage and student production season. When he isn’t teaching, Jay also serves as the Logistics Coordinator for the Presidents campus wide Arts Alive SDSU initiative, promoting the visual and performing arts on campus. Jay is also an Equity stage manager, and spent his early career at the Old Globe Theatre. Jay’s other jaunts around San Diego have found him as the Director of Production and Operations for the San Diego Symphony and Director of Operations for House of Blues, overseeing the 20,000 seat Coors Amphitheatre in Chula Vista. Jay is also owner of Cue One Productions, and is a freelance special event manager who produces non-profit charity & concert events in and around the United States.

A very, very basic introduction to the job of production management without many practical tools. It's hard to really quantify production management, but I think that light the asst. lighting designer's book or the stage manager's handbook that this book could have been a lot more useful if it included a lot more specifics, especially around budgeting. Useful in an educational setting but not useful even for the beginning PM once they've had a show or two under their belt.

This book is clear and concise- an easy to read guide with straightforward language. It is clear from the style of the chapters and the writing, the authors really want you to succeed as a production manager and are laying out the tools you need to do so. I highly recommend this book and the companion website to help production managers at every level, from just starting out to seasoned professional looking for a fresh approach. So incredibly worth the investment.

This publication reads like a college term paper -- lots of overview content, but not much depth. It could have benefitted greatly from an editor's review before it went to print. (Within the first couple of pages I found typos and grammatical errors. I was ready to send it back, having only gotten to page 20.). The book does provide a good general overview of what a PM does, and perhaps by the second or third edition the authors will have gained enough experience themselves to see the obvious content shortcomings.

Awesome examples and practical information. Definitely recommend to my theatre managers!

The book is guided towards the advanced Brazilian Portuguese learner. The stories are interesting and witty, usually about urban life in Rio de Janeiro around the 1960s.It gives a good view of how middle class Brazilians lived at that time.The short stories are written by famous Brazilian writers and side notes translate difficult phrases or expressions to English.For the intermediate level learners, it would require a wide vocabulary and a very good knowledge of verb tenses, so I would recommend this book to an advanced learner. Great funny stories even for fluent or native Portuguese speakers.

A friend and I are studying Portuguese using Rosetta Stone Portuguese (Brazil) Level 1 & 2 Win/Mac Personal Edition, Brazilian podcasts, and other sources. I thought a reader would be nice to have. There are tons of French readers of various levels, but Portuguese ones are surprisingly scarce. I took a chance on this one.What I noticed right away is that the book has never even been typeset! I couldn't believe my eyes...it appears to have been printed straight from a typewritten page. It's hard to read, because first of all the type is small, and second of all, the baselines are uneven! It was first published around 1970, and it seems to have never been updated, merely reprinted, since then.The book takes newspaper stories and gives you a vocabulary and a quiz after each one. There are about 40 stories in it. It is not a beginner level book by my estimation, at least I can't understand a blessed thing in it. I think as we progress in our studies, the book may come in handy later on as we learn more words.The book is of course Brazilian Portuguese rather than European Portuguese. One thing it does have in its favor is a pretty extensive dictionary of common words and expressions.In the meantime, the search is on for the ideal. This is about all there is available for the time being. I would like to see the book updated with a bigger, more easily-read typeface and new stories.

Crônicas Brasileiras stands the test of time as one of the great "slice of life" books for anyone interested in Brazilian culture and language. I used it first as a student in the early 1980's and have continued to use it as a teacher. The editors have done an excellent job selecting stories that immerse the reader in Brazilian culture and language. My students and I thoroughly enjoy the stories. Over the years I have probably reread each one twenty times and I still enjoy them. They are a great introduction to so many wonderful Brazilian authors.

The best part is that it has a glossary with all the vocabulary in the back and footnotes at the end of the page for any colloquial phrases!

This is an excellent book for intermediate students of Brazilian Portuguese. The crônicas are excellent and provide a great deal of knowledge on Brazilian culture, life and ideas. The one criticism is that the grammar lessons could be a bit meatier, but they do provide an excellent overview of concepts and provide some new ones as well. The readings are accompanied by a great dictionary (some language books choose to skimp in their dictionary, but this book is very generous). Overall, a very good book for those that want to improve their reading comprehension in Portuguese.

In this book, the author has selected authentic Brazilian short writings, previously published, as a basis for teaching Portuguese. The writings are fascinating glimpses into the culture of Brazil, especially Rio de Janeiro, both in contemporary and past periods. The exercises are well prepared and the examples clearly show what needs to be done; my only request would be for an answer key. This book is geared for the intermediate student of Portuguese who wants to learn more.

About the Author

Józef Czapski (1896–1993), a painter and writer, and an eyewitness to the turbulent history of the twentieth century, was born into an aristocratic family in Prague and grew up in Poland under czarist domination. After receiving his baccalaureate in Saint Petersburg, he went on to study law at Imperial University and was present during the February Revolution of 1917. Briefly a cavalry officer in World War I, decorated for bravery in the Polish-Soviet War, Czapski went on to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków and then moved to Paris to paint. He spent seven years in Paris, moving in social circles that included friends of Proust and Bonnard, and it was only in 1931 that he returned to Warsaw, and began exhibiting his work and writing art criticism. When Germany invaded Poland in September 1939, Czapski sought active duty as a reserve officer. Captured by the Germans, he was handed over to the Soviets as a prisoner of war, though for reasons that remain mysterious he was not among the twenty-two thousand Polish officers who were summarily executed by the Soviet secret police. Czapski described his experiences in the Soviet Union in two books: Memories of Starobielsk (forthcoming from NYRB) and Inhuman Land (available from NYRB), the latter of which describes his continuing efforts to find out what had happened to his missing and murdered colleagues. Unwilling to live in postwar communist Poland, Czapski set up a studio outside of Paris. His essays appeared in Kultura, the leading intellectual journal of the Polish emigration that he helped establish; his painting underwent a great final flowering in the 1980s. Czapski died, nearly blind, at ninety-six.Eric Karpeles, painter, writer and translator, is the author of Almost Nothing: The 20th Century Art and Life of Józef Czapski. His comprehensive guide, Paintings in Proust, considers the intersection of literary and visual aesthetics in the work of the great French novelist. He has written about the paintings of poet Elizabeth Bishop and about the end of life as seen through the works of Emily Dickinson, Gustav Mahler and Mark Rothko. I read this book when it first came out in French, and just re-read it in Karpeles's English translation. A Proust scholar will find perhaps little that they would consider new in terms of research, and the main interest of the book may be its context. While imprisoned in Gryazovets, a Russian camp near Vologda, located in a bombed-out monastery, Czapski participated in a series of sometimes authorized, sometimes clandestine lectures: inmates would discourse from memory on any topic dear to them, whether literature, sports, geography... Czapski gave a series of talks on the history of painting (and, as we learn from Karpeles's biography of Czapski, "Almost Nothing," even drafted an art historical volume, but the notes were lost, confiscated...). As he worked on his topic, another idea came to haunt him: to present to his fellow prisoners the work of Proust -- whom he saw as a sort of prisoner, locked in his "corked bedroom," in disregard of his health, entirely devoted to his work. Proust's "In Search of Lost Time" brought hope of a time regained into a place so remote and seemingly antithetical to the aristocratic world he describes. Speaking to Polish fellows in arms, Czapski nevertheless gave his lectures in French. His notes, some of which are reproduced and translated (with only a handful of very slight errors) in the plate section, are a visual map to his interpretation of Proust, drafted mainly in Polish, with a sprinkling of French, German, Latin, as required by the origin of the references. The French edition of these talks presents perhaps a more fragile text as it preserves some grammatical errors and omissions made in the surviving transcripts of these lectures. (The journey from the original conception to the published text is in itself fascinating: it's not clear whether Czapski had detailed notes or whether he spoke based on the mental map in the form of visual diagrams recorded in the notebooks; afterwards, he dictated the lectures in abridged form to two inmates who transcribed it on a typewriter -- as Karpeles points out, mystery envelops the circumstances of the creation of this typescript [a typewriter in a gulag?]. Eventually a second typescript was created. Both bear some handwritten corrections made by Czapski, perhaps others. Karpeles's version relies on a comparison between the two versions; whereas the French publication had access to only one typescript.) Perhaps because of publishing costs, the NYRB edition reproduces only a few select pages with the draft diagrams, accompanied by a translation on the facing page. The French version doesn't offer translations of its plates, but includes color photographs of the entire notebook, including the two tattered covers with the title "Tyetrad" [Exercise Book], printed in Cyrillics.Let not the Proust scholar be too disappointed or walk away too early, however. While Czapski may seem to add little to the "scholarship," doesn't encountering Proust in the gulag tell us something about Proust we may have previously overlooked? And plain and "unscholarly" as Czapski's interpretation may appear, it brings in his unique erudition by setting Proust side by side Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Zeromski, Conrad in ways that to a discerning eye might indeed suggest new avenues of exploration!

I downloaded the sample before purchase and ran into issues with the link in the book to upgrade for ability to print. Amazon doesn't seem to update versions after purchase.

It is a good book and very detailed but out of date with the current version of Apache. I downloaded the source code which is referenced in the book and it is also out of date with the latest Apache but I learned a lot between the source code and the book. It has been worthwhile.

I needed a refresher, what I knew was over 10 years old.

What I hoped for: A book that would plumb the depths of Apache's complexity and help me achieve the configurations I want in my day to day work life.What I found: A very basic getting started with Apache guide. It's fine but feels a bit scatter brained. Honestly, I think the average user would be much better off with any one of the platform specific introduction guides out there.

Good basic book for setting up an Apache server.

This is a compact yet essential book behind which lies decades of empirical research. The illustrations nicely capture the core message, and the structure chosen is interesting in itself ("experts reflect, experts borrow", etc).Reading this won't make you design software like an expert, but it should help to keep important principles in mind. My only wish, and this is the researcher in me speaking, is that there was a way to link the guidance to the specific examples and research establishing that guidance.

This is a short book, little (6"x6") book that nicely captures the 66 ideas succinctly. These ideas are distilled from years of research done by hundreds of people. However, don't let the book's deceptive simplicity fool you into thinking that it is for novices. If you're not already fairly experienced with software design, you're unlikely to get much out of it. That is simply not the target audience, in my opinion. But then please also remember that it is an MIT Press book...not exactly a lightweight grade book publisher.If you are semi-expert or atleast fairly seasoned in software design, this book is a gem. Think of it as a constant reminder to deliberately prod you about some of the better practices. (The book has a companion site, but I found nothing more than a preview of the book's content there.) I view this book as surely worth the thirteen bucks I paid for it.The book's broader appeal is that anyone who does white-collar thinking-driven, design-oriented work other than software design will also find the takeaways from the book meaningful, relevant, and digestible. Overall, I would recommend this book if you're in the seasoned/ experienced category. If you're a rookie 2-3 years out of school, please come back in ten years time...it will mean more then.

I finished Software Design Decoded in an hour which makes it seem poor value (it doesn't need to be a hardback, certainly) but every page is food for thought and you end up thinking about what you've read for quite a while. A book to leave on your desk and dip into repeatedly over time.The value proposition would be improved if there were examples of each adage in practice.

This fantastic book contains numerous aphorisms and axioms for people who actually design code (not just write code).Some may say that the book is too short but that's because each page has few words but contains wisdom that goes far beyond the words.I've seen these principles often ignored on real projects and it's always to the detriment of the project.If you read the book and it seems too simple, maybe take a moment and evaluate what you do know and how you might summarize what you know. Those who've been through the Software Dev Life Cycle at numerous companies have seen each of these axioms play out in the positive and the negative along the way.Great book. Interesting and thought provoking.

You’ll find yourself nodding at times, making notes on practices to try, and thinking of all the people you want to read this.The section on experts sketching spoke to me. Beyond sketching, Software Design Decoded covers simplification, non-linearity, collaboration, uncertainty, fear and more.If you are curious how your practices match with, or can be expanded to, expert levels, pick up this book.And if you work with a manager that doesn’t get your seemingly random, casual, exploratory approach, drop a copy on their desk.

I bookmark things I want to share with my scrum teams. This little book had like 40 bookmarks in it by the time I got to the other cover....every gem succinctly put and rings as true as any Dilbert comic ever did.

Nice overall design and illustrations, but kind of light on content specificity. Some of the "66 Ways Expert Think" are more bromidic than insightful. Still, software coffeetable books are not common, and this one is pretty nice overall.

The reasons for this attitude are his ever-present compulsion to learn and discover, his urge to follow his insatiable curiosity (about everything!) wherever it might lead, his willingness to simply state whatever he thinks when asked, and his refusal to always take life so seriously. It is evident that Dr. Feynman has achieved what many can only dream of--living a meaningful and accomplished life while still being able to find absolute joy and fun in so much of how we spend that life.It’s hard to imagine anyone that would not find this an interesting and enjoyable read. Although Dr. Feynman is a physicist, this is not a science book, and the reader really needs nothing in the way of a scientific background to fully enjoy it.The book is divided into five parts corresponding to different parts of the author’s life. Within each part, the stories themselves are rarely more than half a dozen pages long, and none depend on the others. Although I read it cover-to-cover in order, it would be easy to open to any of the stories and read it independently. It is one of those books one could pick up when there are only a few minutes to read. But your experience may be like mine, and you may not want to put it down again!Highly recommended for just about anyone!

We are not often blessed with persons of the amazing intelligence of Richard Feynman. Even someone with just a smattering of science and math can appreciate this Nobel Prize winning, bongo drum playing, safe cracking denizen of the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos. Here was a man of superior intellect who could yet relate to the world around him and who had a curious interest in many facets of human endeavor. That is coupled with obvious tenderness toward his first wife, who dies of TB during the Manhattan Project. Even as Feynman writes about that in tightlipped fashion, his deep love for her and sorrow for the loss comes through.The book is not tightly organized but it is smartly written. Guys like Einstein, Feynman, Carl Sagan will all wrestle from time to time with the non-scientific question of what preceded the Big Bang, if only by asking fleetingly if there is some principle of causation behind it all. Obviously I don't know if God exists or what it all means. But it is hard for me to think that such a towering intellect encased in such a lovely witty and wise person results from mere accident. I'll go no further.

Feynman is a genius. The entire book is full of charming, intelligent, and surprisingly inspiring stories about the "curious character" that was the late, great Richard Feynman.The last chapter is something else entirely: an entire philosophy and ethos of scientific thought rolled into a few pages. I found Feynman's principles and ideals for scientific integrity almost unbelievably precious: to never compromise on experimentation, to never make claims you can't back up with hard evidence, and most importantly, to never fool yourself into thinking that you're more right than you actually are.Although only the scientifically or mathematically trained will understand much about Feynman's actual work, his life philosophy and its implications are something that everyone can benefit from. The world would be a better place if each of us tried to replicate just a little of his intellectual integrity. I almost didn't believe such beautiful, pure intellectual idealism wasn't possible until I read this book.

Richard Feynman is the exact brand of aloof, irreverent, genius that the world needs, at any and every time. This casual telling of myriad anecdotes from Feynman's life is precious and airy, even when dealing with early nuclear secrets, death, and other heavy topics. If you're not sold on buying this book, be sure to watch several of the popular Richard Feynman videos on YouTube. This book is better than any of them. Enjoy.

Very entertaining book. Feynman was famous for taking a fresh, original approach in physics; he was always re-inventing the ideas for himself by thinking them through profoundly, starting from fundamentals. He made great contributions and won the Nobel Prize in Physics. This book is not so much about physics, instead some humorous stories and adventures, which show his fresh, original approach to life. I admire his enthusiasm, his love for adventure, his sparkling personality, his honesty and the clarity of his thought, and his disdain for pretense. The anecdotes give much insight into why Feynman was such a great physicist. If you want learn about physics, with his original approach on full display, his best two books are the famous "Feynman Lectures on Physics" (undergraduate courses at Caltech) and "QED, the Strange Theory of Light and Matter".

A strangely inspiring and provocative book. It's hard to put into words the power of this book. Feynman's personality comes through so strongly that you rage against stupid bureaucrats, you see what it means to be an original thinker uninhibited by orthodoxy, you see one of the best explanations of the difference between genuine science and "cargo cult science" as Feynman calls it. You see one of the best explanations for why the California education system has such troubles, when you read his account of reviewing textbooks for the state. Somehow this book inspires you to be smarter, to be more original, and to be more intellectually honest.
