I purchased The Definitive Chevelle SS guide so I could properly identify and purchase parts for my 66 Chevelle project. It was an original SS 396 which had several key parts missing. The first thing I used it for was to determine the correct steering wheel for this car because all of the restoration supply houses offer several that will fit and it was important to me to get the right one. With this guide I was able to quickly determine the correct one for my application.

It wasn't the SS but a fantastic car which I wish I still had.This book authored by Dale McIntosh covers each year and model in great detail from body style changes, engines, drive trains, VIN coding, and on and on. The depth of information is quite impressive.The color pictures are superb and bring back all that was so great about these cars. The Chevelle SS was a standout in the era of muscle and this book will provide to the collector and fan alike everything they would want in capturing the spirit of the time and model.

As a historian I thought this would be a good book to read which if your studying American Mythology it is. This book takes you on a journey of one unbelievable event after another. I started researching this and found even at the time Fanny Kelly was consider to be full of it. My 3rd great grandfather Joseph R. Lambert was murdered by Major Miles Crow scouts along with his 3rd wife and children in July 20 1879 and this made national news. But the savage attack on her husband party the is nothing that I have been able to find. Books that did well could in this time could care a person for the rest of their lives. So desperate was Fanny to try and sell her deal that she pestered the 1870 Sioux delegation to authenticate her story. Which she needed a interpreter but in her story she is able to understand the heartless savages from day one.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I had read a similar book previously and enjoyed it as well. Mrs. Kelly was very good author added some 19th century prose and thoughts along with her difficulties and struggles.

I thought this was a well written book telling about her captivity. What she endured and survived was amazing. I think anyone would enjoy reading this book. It shows how there are good people even in places you'd lease expect.

Excellent write up in this woman's own words of the way it was. No revisionist history portraying the Indians as "noble savages". Tells it like it was and offers excellent insight into the mindset of the Indians of the period.

It was great to get a peek into the life, via this narrative, of someone who lived went through this unique experience.While referring at many times to the Indians as "savages", she nonetheless admired and respected some of them while showing disdain for others. Through her experience I believe we see that we can't paint a people with a broad brush. I think she learned this lesson well.It was interesting to find out how many whites were held for ransom by the Indians. She devoted a whole chapter to this.She also related a dispute that she had with another captive. They were going to write a book together but that fell apart when the other captive "stole" the manuscript and told the story as her own.If you are of a religious persuasion, you may find inspiration in her use of faith to overcome the obstacles put in front of her.The book is also sprinkled throughout with historical photographs that relate to her story.

It is an excellent book detailing the live of thos who were Indian captives.

Well written which must have been very hard to relive everything again. I felt she was honest in her telling of such a scary and hurtful time of the founding of our western land.

Interesting in a historical time period. The book is a picture of a time when white settlement was taken place, changing the way of the native people and their attitude towards them.

More specialized than The Great Cat Massacre, Darnton's latest still cogently demonstrates through tables, case studies, analysis and anecdotes just how different the pre-Revolutionary French were from postmodern Americans. In this second volume of a trilogy that began with The Business of Enlightenment, Darnton returns to the extensive publishing records of the Societe typographique de Neuchatel (STN) to trace the demand for books forbidden as a threat to morals and politics. These "philosophical books," as they were called, included Rousseau's Social Contract. But with only one order in STN's records, it was hardly a bestseller. Accordingly, Darnton focuses on three widely disseminated books representing different popular genres: the pornographic Therese philosophe (probably by Marquis d'Argens); the philosophical utopian fantasy L'An 2440 by Louis-Sebastien Mercier; and the libelle (think libelous) Anecdotes sur Mme la comtesse du Barry ascribed to Mathieu-Francois Pidansat de Mairobert. His discussion of the distribution, reception and influence of these books is convincing and careful (general readers may find some sections on methodology a little too careful). Darnton sees these works as literature, not just sociological artifacts; and, if lengthy excerpts from L'An 2440 seem a little dated, those from Therese and Anecdotes are still ribaldly amusing. With this volume, Darnton consolidates his position as one of the most innovative and influential historians of 18th-century France. For over 25 years, Darnton (Shelby Cullom Davis Professor of European History, Princeton) has been studying reading habits and book selling during the period often referred to as the Enlightenment. The present work is published conjointly with a companion volume, The Corpus of Clandestine Literature in France, 1769-1789. The latter gives statistical details for what Forbidden Bestsellers covers more descriptively. The gist of what Darnton says is that philosophes like Voltaire and Rousseau had far less impact on French readers than did the anonymous authors of scandalous, libelous, treasonous, and/or pornographic works, most of which were smuggled into France from the Netherlands, Switzerland, or the German states. Taken together, they had a corrosive effect on all established values and practices and thus contributed to the outbreak of the French Revolution. Very highly recommended for all libraries.?T.J. This is a book about how and why some books and publishings were forbidden in early Europe. It tells how many Forbidden books were published and how the were distributed, fun and interesting .

A good read on a misunderstood era. My only criticism pertains to his translation of THERESE PHILOSOPHE -- so much is removed of THERESE that the story doesn't make sense. After 2 pages he omits 10 pages that make sense of the rest of the story -- Therese from age 7 to age 23 is omitted.Someone left a snide comment for this review, that of course some was omitted as it was excerpted. How convenient. When publishers do it it's called censorship. The lubricity is the only real charm of D'Argens work, as Sade commented (in Juliette), and without it there is no story.Darnton could have bleeped out the --- words and given us a taste; but this is America, so fidelity to the original text is no special virtue. Is this a children's book? Even Wikipedia is nowhere near as prudish. There is really no point to Darnton's translation except to prove that he can translate.Darnton surely knew he had no competition -- d'Argens, like Mirabeau, has not had a decent English translation. This goes for most libertine novels from the Enfer of the Bibliotheque Nationale, with the glaring exception of Sade, who is far more objectionable than the innocent and realistic sensuality of D'Argens.If you don't have to have it rated PG, get the LIBERTINE READER by Michel Feher. If you read French also check out Patrick Wald Lasowski, Philippe Sollers and others whose writings on libertinism and the libertine novel are easily found in Google searches.

This book comes from great research project. It is very interesting and you see points and case studies you have never heard before. Gives you a great idea on how mass media works under censorship.

This is one of the most intelligent books I have ever read about french revolution or, in this case, pre revolutionary France and the role of that vaporous, difficult to define but very real effect of ideas, emotions, frames of thinking and everything else that in the mind of public support or prepare the demolition of a regimen. The argument is smart, the style flawless. The book remembered me the great one of Crane Brinton about revolutions.

Many important facts I had not known (that there were no newspapers in 18th C France! that the King's ability to celebrate Easter Mass, having put himself outside the pure zone of Catholics by flagrant mistresses led to disrespect and demise of the Monarchy; the import of the Jansenists, and the government's action to prevent their end-of-iife-absolution; how the actions 50-70 years earlier led to the French Revolution; that Napoleon read Rousseau!) from a wonderful depth of research makes this a fascinating read. The best part is how Darnton sets up an analyses according to one line of ideas, then wipes it off, offering another thesis using a different set of premises. This makes the reader think, and keeps the ideas lively, instead of the usual historian laying down the "Facts' which the reader must swallow whole. His analysis of the Therese story is brilliant philosophy, well worthy of the honors he had received, MacArthur prize, Harvard Fellowship, etc. This is much more than a history; it is like entering a mirror-within-a-mirror-within-a-mirror, to understand the reverberations of the questioning of religious principles. I am increasingly interested in how the West attained the present separation of church and state after centuries of the stranglehold Catholics had on life. It took many jolts over a long period, and both questioning of the leaders' hypocrisy, and the ability to disseminate these questions to the public. This book also shows how aspects of civilisation as we know it were vastly different then: just the concept of "public opinion" was new; how powerful it is in democracy now! I should think policy makers would study this book to understand the West, to see how to help democracy prevail in struggling countries, where primary allegiance is demanded by the religion, not the state, and there is no faith in the rule of law. Who would have thought that such a topic as Forbidden 18thC Literature' would be so contemporary and meaningful. It is how Darnton investigates that makes this book so relevant, as well as his ability to gather facts, really look at the events and see what is going on; thorough, honest, open, without a point to prove. Brilliant!

I used to read for laughs, but Darnton's book on how books were banned for comments critical of religion, the state, and morals made me reflect on how the lack of a moral world order has been the basis for ways the religions and states have been getting away with whatever forms of perplexity people are faced with when some people just don't get it.

As an author of books on selling, I keep an eye out for the best books on sales and sales psychology. This book is a game changer.In reply to the few one star reviews...It has been stated in the uncharitable reviews, that the entire content of the book could have been written in a few pages. I agree, at first look, this would seem true. The Harvard Business Review article "Harnessing the Science of Persuasion" by Cialdini, from their October 2001 issue....is a good example. You can even get the Six Principles from the books Table Of Contents...save yourself some time.But sales ideas have to not just be listed....not just explained...they have to be sold. Examples have to be given, Principles have to beexplained...we need proof. And you need the entire book to do that. The people who read a short article by the author, maybe read theideas...but nothing else happens. Salespeople are changed by the content of this book, like with all great sales books. For salespeople to benefit from a sales book, the ideas have to be explained, understood, proven, accepted, and made real. This book does that.I own perhaps 2,000 books on the subject of selling. This is certainly in the top 5.

Scott Adams had a list of books he recommended on the science of persuasion. At the top of his list was this book, which was a really fascinating and enlightening read. It reminds me why being a skeptic and a cynic are so valuable and necessary, particularly in today's world. As Lily Tomlin said, people would often accuse her of being a cynic, but she found she could still barely keep up. In the book Robert Cialdini delineates the 6 ways a "compliance professional" will lead us down the yellow brick road - to do things which are often both foolish and against our self interests. I'm going to steal from the Wikipedia post and reprint these here:1. Reciprocity – People tend to return a favor, thus the pervasiveness of free samples in marketing. In his conferences, he often uses the example of Ethiopia providing thousands of dollars in humanitarian aid to Mexico just after the 1985 earthquake, despite Ethiopia suffering from a crippling famine and civil war at the time. Ethiopia had been reciprocating for the diplomatic support Mexico provided when Italy invaded Ethiopia in 1935. The good cop/bad cop strategy is also based on this principle.2. Commitment and consistency – If people commit, orally or in writing, to an idea or goal, they are more likely to honor that commitment because of establishing that idea or goal as being congruent with their self-image. Even if the original incentive or motivation is removed after they have already agreed, they will continue to honor the agreement. Cialdini notes Chinese brainwashing of American prisoners of war to rewrite their self-image and gain automatic unenforced compliance. Another example is children being made to repeat the Pledge of Allegiance each morning and why marketers make you close popups by saying “I’ll sign up later” or "No thanks, I prefer not making money”.3. Social proof – People will do things that they see other people are doing. For example, in one experiment, one or more confederates would look up into the sky; bystanders would then look up into the sky to see what they were seeing. At one point this experiment aborted, as so many people were looking up that they stopped traffic. See conformity, and the Asch conformity experiments.4. Authority – People will tend to obey authority figures, even if they are asked to perform objectionable acts. Cialdini cites incidents such as the Milgram experiments in the early 1960s and the My Lai massacre.5. Liking – People are easily persuaded by other people that they like. Cialdini cites the marketing of Tupperware in what might now be called viral marketing. People were more likely to buy if they liked the person selling it to them. Some of the many biases favoring more attractive people are discussed. See physical attractiveness stereotype.6. Scarcity – Perceived scarcity will generate demand. For example, saying offers are available for a "limited time only" encourages sales.The trick is that as the world gets more complex, these 6 things also provide us with social shortcuts, to keep on the straight and narrow with minimal effort. But this means we have to be vigilant - to make sure we are not being taken advantage of. He notes that we often get that funny feeling in the pit our stomach when we are being manipulated against our will, and he suggests using that feeling/intuition to our advantage - to recognize when we are at risk. One of the things I love about this book is that Cialdini himself is the first to admit that even with all he knows, even he was and is not immune, and he provides some very funny examples to show how he personally has been taken advantage of.This really is a must read book. In the same vein, the last thing on his list is a one sentence course on persuasion - the sentence being, "People will do anything for those who encourage their dreams, justify their failures, allay their fears, confirm their suspicions, and help them throw rocks at their enemies."I think one of the most amazing examples in his book concerns well publicized suicides, as there are not just the expected copy cat suicides, but also up to 10X more fatal aircraft and automobile crashes. It's amazing how little it takes to establish a new subconscious social norm. Our lizard brain betrays us more often than we might think.

So this book is mainly in the advocacy of the consumer. The premise is that we have mental shortcuts that trigger, almost automatic responses. This is our bodies and brains being psychologically efficient in our best interests. The author believes that many companies manipulate and take advantage of these psychological efficiencies for financial gain. He purports that it is dangerous for companies to do so, because as we learn we are being manipulated, we will use those autoresponses less and less...and they will no longer be used as intended (for our benefit) by our brains. The irony is, he explains exactly how these auto responses work and therefore this book has become quite popular among the very audience he speaks against using these tactics.I picked the book up because it was recommended by a successful business owner who indicated that in building her business model, marketing strategy, and designing her website she used the principles in this book and found them to be very effective.Insightful with good breakdowns of each principle and great examples. He even explains how a consumer can act against their natural and automated response to some of these triggers, which, for a business person, provides research into how to overcome rebuttals.Could be that he wrote this book for the consumer, so they understood how they are being manipulated and how to overcome it...or could be that he geniusly manipulated us into believing it was in advocacy of the consumer when it's really for the business owner, heh heh. Either way, good read.

This book is dated, & largely appears to pre-date what we consider the modern internet/TV phenomenon, & that's obvious in reading it. That's its only real flaw, though the author does have another book out more recently, & to be fair, this wouldn't likely receive much improvement from an updated revision. That latter point is it's great strength; the lessons inside about how we are susceptible to persuasion don't really need updating per se; they are solid enough, outlined well enough, & supported with facts & data enough that they withstand the obvious test of time. Learning how persuasion can be done, how we can do it, & more importantly, he we can resist it, is a highly worthwhile lesson, which I will carry forward in my own life & import to my family as well.

As I became more and more frustrated with Orthodox Christianity, I felt that the best thing for me to do, is to work on fixing myself, and see where that takes me. I made it a point to not judge others as much, to be more patient, and to really just be a nicer person. Since then, I feel like things are making so much more sense to me. I don't feel wrong for questioning certain things regarding my past beliefs. I feel so much more of a connection to myself, and to God, to everything.In this book, M.P. Hall suggests that the first thing any person on a path to spiritual truth must do is look inside themselves and become more virtuous. If the self is not cleansed, then it will not be possible to be on an enlightened path (the middle way, Spiritual Truth, etc.). It made so much sense when I read that. Let me point out that I am not claiming to be remotely close to becoming enlightened, or that I have fixed all of my faults. But I have been having excellent progress on becoming a better person, and since then, have been much more happy. More things make sense, it's easier to change my opinion based on new information, and I feel like I am finding some truth. I have a long ways to go, probably many lifetimes, but that is ok. When I do read scripture, I can usually find a little bit more meaning in the message than just the literal message itself. I enjoy reading more about Christian scripture, Gnostic, Canonical, and many others such as Hindu. If I can find truth in something, then I will read it now. I've gotten rid of my previous religious dogmas, and look forward to learning about other spiritual beliefs.Hall gives examples of the virtues that one should work on, and why they are important for progressing into the next stage of your journey.He also talks about the different ways to spot a fraudulent adept, and what to look for in one to listen to. Of course, he mentions that you should never take anything anyone says as the ultimate Truth. It should be felt and found from within. Any adept that claims to promise enlightenment, is a fraud, and they should only help guide you to keep you on your path. And this is something that has been ringing true to me as well in some instances.There is much more in this little book, and if you are on a journey of finding truth, and you want some good advice, this would be a good buy for you. Even though Manly P. Hall has much to offer, remember that what he says is not your truth. It can only be found from within. He will even tell you this. Happy journeys.Bradley G.

I am a huge Manly P Hall fan. I listen to his lectures everyday. What a insightful man and very underrated philosopher, theologian and academic. This should be the beginning of your journey into all mysticism, esoteric knowledge, occult and other sacred knowledge. This man spent his life deeply invested into these subjects as well as separating false doctrines with real legitimate ones.This is a great guide to open your eyes. DO NOT DIVE HEADFIRST INTO THE RABBIT HOLE OF THESE TOPICS is probably the biggest message of this book. Be wise about how you approach topics and take most things with a grain of salt.He also explains how to not get involved in cults or invest in false teachers who practice for profit. This book contains many moral lessons. It instructs how to approach esoteric knowledge. The order in which you should learn subject by subject to have a smooth journey into really empowering knowledge.As a man who spent his life researching everything you talks about greatly, I believe this man. You can tell he truly knows what he speaks of.

This short book bu Manly P. Hall lives up to it's title - it definitely is a word to the wise. If you are planning on reading more of his works, or getting into the esoteric field, this book is a good no bull-s*** primer. Manly P. Hall pulls no punches, he has an obvious bias against new age enlightened "Masters" But shouldn't we all - there are so many charlatans in the field, and Manly P. Hall just encourages people not to instantly woooed by someone who "found the light"

This is the best, most legit book on the occult and religion I have ever read. I strongly suggest it to anyone who is interested in teachings of the mystery schools. There are no short cuts on the road to truth, essentially thats the message conveyed here. The journey of self mastery is meant to be a difficult one, and only after self mastery has occurred can a person even begin the much longer journey to ultimate truth. This book resonated with every fiber of my being, it is a timeless treasure and has actually changed my course of action in life. READ THIS BOOK.

Certifications, safety records, boats, located in town, in a hotel? Tell me something anything.Who should I rent from for shore diving?Getting certified in Cozumel vs. at home before my trip?Are there hotels/resorts with dive shops that offer certification?At a cost of almost $17 here is what the book gives you:A very thin book that could have easily been included with the lonely planet guide book for Cozumel, not as a standalone dive book for Cozumel.Descriptions of the actual diving sites, not so much for snorkeling.Tips for diving in general.Pictures of fish and and people scuba diving.List of dive shops with zero information; you can get more information on Google maps.

I took this with me this past May to Cozumel, where I went diving. I was happy to be able to read and hi-light the pluses and minuses of the water conditions there. I always order these Lonely Planet books months BEFORE my trip, not only to see if it is really where I want to go, but also as my guide when I am there!They contain, JUST ENOUGH INFORMATION, without overkill. Nice colorful photos, and the end section always makes you educated on the dangers in the ocean as well!

Good information for divers, but, any snorkeling information was an after thought at best. Island information and Cozumel travel tips were accurate.
