When I began playing the harmonica about a month ago I purchased numerous instruction books along with taking lessons on line. I found this publication, "Instant Harmonica" by Patrick Byrne, to be very helpful. It covered the subject matter in a simple and straight forward manner. It began by explaining that the harmonica is a real musical instrument and gave tips on keeping your harmonica clean. It went on to show how to hold and harmonica, breathing and how to read harmonica music. The importance of tones and rhythm were also covered in this text.As a beginner playing the harmonica it is important for the practice songs to also have the words. This guide had the song notes, tabs and words, which made it easy to learn some of the common beginners songs. Some of these included: Oh! Susanna, Kumbaya, Amazing Grace, which is one of my favorites, Camp town Races, Frankie and Johnny, On Top of Old Smoky, Blow the man down, Home on the range and numerous other song tabs. Unlike a couple of harmonica song and instruction publications I purchased, this one covered the topic without getting bogged down in too many technical details. The important thing emphasized is to practice, practice, practice with your harmonica, which I have been doing every day.For anyone who is considering learning to play the harmonica, this guide along with some formal instruction is an excellent combination. Got this and the Swan (Chinese) Harmonica for a bday gift. The Harmonica is lousy so we returned that for a Suzuki Folk master. The book is great and lots of good songs in it. The gift was very well received.

Great book, I have already started playing my harmonica with this book. Easy to follow directions. I would recommend this harmonica music book to everyone who is interested in learning to play the harmonica.

Even an old lady 62 years old can learn to play.

It's a good primer - I got this for my son and I. I've been playing for 30 years but I wanted a copy of the same book so I got 2 - he can tell me what page he's on, problems, etc...It's good instruction - makes it easy. But the song selection is sorta dated. lol. I'm 46 and I barely have heard a lot of these. It would be better if it had more campfire classics and modern songs / riffs to keep the next generation interested.

This book is excellent, I was playing tunes shortly after I received the book, they were beginner tunes but still I made clear music from my Harmonica Very satisfied with this beginners instruction book.

Definitely helps in learning the Harmonica...takes much practice though as does any music instrument you learn. Satisfied with this book.

This book won't rust, bust, or fall apart, I hope. All seriousness aside, my dogs did try to sing with me, and they still do. My whole family is using the book to learn the harmonica, even though I play as softly as I can, the dogs still try to sing with me. My daughter says that I'm hurting their ears. I don't think so.

This is still my favorite starter book on MAKE, even in 2015. I have the other books: The GNU MAKE Book, and Managing Projects with GNU Make but only Mastering Make teach you from beginning. In that respect this book should get even more than 5 stars.

As one of the authors, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the 3 other reviews for their comments. I'm glad to see that the book is still useful all these years later.

It's an old book, but does a better job of breaking down Make into component pieces than my more modern computer science books do.But to be fair, the newer books are not dedicated to Make as this one is.

What makes this book so good is how easy it is to read. The author was able to create a historical account with pacing and depth of character that reads like any of the best fiction novels on the market. This was an interesting, confusing, and damaging event n U.S. history and this book did a great job of telling the story. One of the best jobs of getting the reader involved with the subjects in a historical book that I`ve ever read.

Excellent writing , concise and exciting story of two young men who had the best of everything but were completely self absorbed in a hedonistic lifestyle that was empty and devoid of purpose. Two young men from privileged backgrounds that felt such entitlements to a prosperous life without the struggles that accompany such a lifestyle.

A very true but sad record of historical fact. The details of the way Boyce and Daulton operated are amazing and true. I say so because I had a very minor subsequent involvement in the aftermath. The details of how the two developed their friendship, and the societal environment that existed at the time reinforce the common held view about the "era of free love" in which we baby boomers developed in our teen years.

Sadly, an excellent portrayal of some of our younger generation. None of the people are likeable, but are reflections of people we know or have known. Exactly fits that old tired cliche, "fact is stranger than fiction'. The author has captured the feel of the times and the callousness of youth. An unforgettable book.

This story has been around a long time, but it was well worth reading. Excellent accounting of a major spy event in America. They were very lucky to have escaped execution. Sadly, they both have been free men for many years. Great read, outstanding writer.

Mr. Lindsey did a thorough job of characterizing Christopher and Daulton. I came away with a much better understanding why these two betrayed their countries, their families, friends and the American people. One wanted to embarrass his father's beliefs about law enforcement and the other just wanted money.

This is one of those books whose greatness lost out to the attraction of the big screen of Hollywood. Yes, the book, penned by journalist Robert Lindsey, is better. Lindsey is thorough and supplies in-depth detail after detail, taking the reader into the 1970s world of drug-using and dealing, the American intelligence community -- even the world of falconry. What it essentially boils down to is the story of two sociopaths (Lindsey doesn't delve into the world of psychology and his great coverage stands on its own merit).Why would two well-raised, fairly wealthy 20-somethings sell above-top-secret intelligence to the Soviet Union and risk the lives of the world via nuclear holocaust? In the case of dope-dealing Andrew Daulton Lee, it boiled down to nothing more than money, a power-trip and excitement. In the case of Christopher John Boyce, the rationale was more idealistic.Yes, one can argue that America was built "by the few for the few." Yes, the world's greatest democracy has over the years and to its own end repressed foreign governments. Hypocrisy, plain and simple. But neither money nor idealism of this sort can justify selling out one's county.It's a thought-provoking book that elicits strong emotions, all while reading like excellent, exciting fiction. But it's also a statement of American justice. And that's not necessarily a good thing. As of 2010, both men have been free for more than a decade (they were convicted in 1977 -- Lee was released in 1998, and Boyce in 2002, AFTER a prison escape and 17 bank robberies). But the latter is another story.If you want a good, unique read, you can't go wrong with this relatively unheralded book.

About the Author

Dan Weiniger is husband, father, businessman author and a survivor of two heart attacks. He was born in Flemington, New Jersey but now lives in Westfield, New Jersey with his family and their dog, Popcorn. He attended Arizona State University, where he attained a B.S. degree, and Fairleigh Dickinson University, where he secured a Certificate of Visual Communications. Since then Dan has gone on to have a varied and interesting career, trading options/futures on American Stock, owning ice cream stores and selling life insurance. Dan’s life was changed forever when he suffered a second heart attack and was told that 80% of his heart had died. He spent many days in hospital, undergoing many procedures and is currently waiting for a heart transplant, but it was the lessons he learned as a result of this which gave him the skills to turn obstacles into opportunities. It also helped him to formulate his book, The Gift of Heart Failure, in which he writes about his 12 Fabulous Fundamentals. When he isn’t working, Dan enjoys walking with his dog, watching his daughter play tennis and raising awareness for organ and tissue Donation. He also loves travel, exploring new cities and watching movies. Dan hopes that his book will inspire and help others with their obstacles, whatever they may be, and in the future he would love to be able to do motivational speaking on the subject, sharing his own outlook on life - “Instead of complaining that the rose bush is full of thorns, be happy the thorn bush has roses.”

I have read several books on how to turn obstacles into opportunities. Dr. Wayne Dyer's spring to mind. They have helped me shape my life and find happiness. What's unique about "The Gift Of Heart Failure" is that it is written not by a psychologist emeritus, but by someone who was forced to embark a journey he had not chosen, having come very close to sudden death, not once, but twice in his life.Dan can only live though an LVAD machine attached to his body. He doesn't have a pulse. "How cool is that?" he chirps. Most people who suffered such extensive damage to their heart would live the rest of their life wallowing in self-pity. Dan turned the experience into an opportunity to help others.Could the book be better stuctured? Perhaps. Would it benefit from a spell-check? Absolutely. Still, I found myself highlighting several passages. I have already started taking a few of the action steps recommended by Dan, and have witnessed a positive change in my life. I figure, anything that helps making the world a better place is deserving of 5 stars. I have also appeciated the humor that permeates the pages, and the personal anecdotes, which make the book less of an academic effort and more of a good companion on the often difficult journey that life is.

This book was a joy to read! It felt like Dan was sitting in front of me, making me laugh and sharing his most personal feelings and experiences. Above all, it was a very inspirational book, with so much depth and truth in every chapter. One doesn't need to go through a life-threatening illness to learn from and appreciate Dan's lessons--it applies to all of us. You can read it once, and then read it again for the great reminders of how to live your live with joy and meaning. All the best to you, Dan! And thanks for sharing your story.

Dan is a super hero! His positivity and cheerful outlook are life altering for all who read his book. His use of song lyrics made me smile at every instance.
