I have read most, if not all, of the books written by the talented Jennifer Weiner. I just want to clarify that before I begin my review.The story begins with both of our main characters as young children, meeting under unexpected circumstances in a hospital. Before they meet, we get to know a little about Rachel. Immediately, my heart goes out to the struggling, slightly spoiled yet simultaneously mature, little girl. Andy, by contrast, is the opposite of spoiled. His circumstances are less than ideal, as he grows up conflicted about himself.Fast forward, we learn more about Rachel and Andy. Naturally, they continue on very different paths- both economically and internally. However, both are diligent and ambitious in their own respects.Over the years, their paths continue to cross. Life continues to happen. As a reader, I give kudos to Weiner for not only keeping me engaged in the protagonists, but also very invested in the secondary characters.Overall, it was a great read. I finished in one day. Speaking of one day, I would've have given a five star rating, but "Who Do You Love" is rather similar to "One Day."
I don't understand why this book got such great reviews; I couldn't even finish it. The two main characters make no sense. There's nothing appealing about the girl and it's hard to understand why the boy is attracted to her; masochistic maybe. Actually, the book's blurb is a lot better than the book.
I can easily imagine Who Do You Love by Jennifer Weiner being made into a romantic movie. It’s got the necessary ingredient: a couple who seemingly appears to be destined together having met as kids who continuously come together over the years only to be separated and continue on their lives while secretly still pining for each other. Not really know how good of a movie it would be, but as a book it was a great read from one of my favorite authors.Being a Weiner fan for a while now, I’ve come to expect well-written stories with charismatic characters. Who Do You Love is no exception. From the start, it was so easy for me to get engrossed into the book. While the plotline sounds familiar (like I said it can be another Hollywood romance movie), its content and story were not banal. Weiner’s couple, Andy Landis and Rachel Blum (“it’s bloom like flowers, not blum like plumâ€), were the heart of the story and by necessity needed to be charismatic and sympathetic figures whose story and journey through life, whether together or separately, were those who we would want to read. Suffice it to say they were, due to Weiner’s ability to create characters, like Andy and Rachel, who are likeable but still human. Add to that, she had them seem so different on the surface, Andy being a fatherless biracial child living with his single working mom on the lower economic ladder and Rachel being a Jewish princess spoiled and protected by her parents due to being born with a heart defect and thus being constantly in and out of the hospital, but at their core had more in common than anyone would believe. Through their budding relationship and beyond, you see how they see themselves, the world they live in and their place in it. While the bigger story is a love story, within in it is an exploration of finding yourself and of what (or who) you truly want. It’s so obvious Andy and Rachel have a unique connection and truly love each other, but it was interesting to see how it is that they end up separated. And the thing I enjoy about that aspect is how it’s never cut and dry. There are no clear “bad guy†to blame. They each had their part to play in the time they have lost and their own idea of what it is to be together. You’re not aware of what you had and lost until time has passed and you have the perspective that comes with time and experiences. The love was never in question in this book. It’s always seems to be whether they are at the right place and mindset in their lives to actually fully realize they were meant to be together.While the book doesn’t have the humor which is found in her previous books (it’s the main thing that made me a fan of her books), the charm and sweetness is there. The drama never gets to the point where it weighs down the book and Weiner manages to retain a certain innocence in her story by her writing. She was able to make Andy and Rachel charismatic and likeable so as to make you want to find out how their story unfolds and inevitably ends. The question of who you love seems to be an easy one to answer, but as the book shows, it’s never as clear cut as we believe/hope it to be.
Jennifer Weiner, whether I love her books or believe they are meh, always captures the essence of her characters. This novel is no different. She may pound it out and repeat herself, but I am confident in her ability to develop a character that makes sense.In this combination romance genre novel, Ms. Weiner explores the rich, spoiled girl with a congential heart problem and the mixed-race, poor but handsome and talented boy. Rachel and Andrew meet in an ER where they are both lost souls in different ways.Their friendship and love evolves in a myriad of ways despite their economic and family situations are worlds apart. Andrew must overcome his economically poor circumstances, no money and no father. Rachel is torn between conformity and her passion for Andy. Andy’s pursuit of an Olympic medal, despite all odds, is well written; we become familiar with the day-to-day agony of athletes. Rachel becomes a social worker and we learn there is no easy answer to any of her cases.The parents of these two are very interesting. Lori has secrets and keeps her emotional distance from the son she loves. Her appearance and philosophy are at odds. Rachel’s parents are over protective but her Nana provides a refuge for Rachel with her take-chances attitude.The problem with the story is that the plot became conventional. I knew what would happen to Andy after he reached the pinnacle of his success. Rachel’s miscommunications to Andy leads to the conventional life she really doesn’t covet. Despite it all, I enjoyed the book. Weiner has been a pioneer and I respect her for her skills and courage.
