This was a supplementary text for a math physics course I had taken years ago. It was entirely on complex analysis. The main text was Copson which like Whittaker and Watson emphasized power series methods as it was also one of the early British texts. In truth Copson seemed more of an outline as complete proofs many times were relegated to references. Whittaker and Watson began with basic real analysis-Dedekind L and R sections, theory of convergence, uniform convergence, sequence and series convergence, Riemann integration, then complex numbers, Argand diagrams and after this development you're eased into complex analysis proper. The development is rigorous as necessary proofs are given along the way. It's not easy as the notation is antiquated. Metric topological ideas and notation made later texts easier to understand and more systematic. For example I did a review on Anthony Zee's text on quantum field theory here on Amazon and outlined performance of a sample contour integral. I needed to justify an inequality to show an arc integral goes to zero at infinity. It follows since sine is a convex function. This notion isn't in this text nor in Copson. Whittaker and Watson does use this inequality in their proof of Jordan's lemma on p. 115 in the residue chapter. They justify with a mean value theorem argument, sin(x)/x is decreasing since its derivative is negative on zero to pi/2 so it's between 2/pi and 1. Copson just suggests drawing the graphs. Anyway the convexity argument though involving similar ideas is structured in a more comprehensible way. The notation is old but still understandable. Here and there phrasing is a little unclear, e.g., on p.53 in the modified Heine-Borel theorem section, CD is referred to as a straight line when they mean a closed interval. This is forgiveable as there's a massive amount of information in this text. Even in the 2nd edition of Jackson, this text is referred to as maintaining full mathematical rigor and is suggested as a mathematical physics reference. It does do the 2nd order linear partial differential equations of mathematical physics like Laplace, heat and wave equations with solutions. It doesn't go as far as classification into parabolic or hyperbolic, pretty much just ones that will have transcendental functions as solutions. To these functions is devoted a great deal of the text. There is material in the text that is difficult to ferret out elsewhere for instance on pp.141-142 of chapter 7, the Borel integral is proven as a formula to do an analytic continuation. Borel summation is also treated. These are used in recovering a Minkowski space integral from a Euclidean integral in Feynman path integration. The following chapter on asymptotic expansions and summable series has material that bears on renormalization, though it's hard to see -they (physicists) jump fast and operate on faith it seems. As it's my habit to at least give a tidbit from the text, I choose a necessary part of the proof of analytic continuation by Borel integral that I just mentioned-it only involves high school geometry, pretty and simple. This is at the bottom footnote of p. 141. Here's the lead up. We start with a circle of radius r where the function is analytic within circle. Next we draw lines from the center of the circle to each of the singularities in the plane. Next draw the perpendicular to the line through the singularity at the singularity for each of them. These perpendiculars form a polygon surrounding the circle. Next take any point P within the polygon and form a circle with OP as diameter where O is the center of our original circle of analyticity. There can be no singularity on or within this circle on OP. Why? Any inscribed angle with O and P as endpoints has vertex or inscribed angle of 90 degrees since OP cuts 180 degrees. If there's a singularity on the circle-P must be on a side of the polygon. If there's a singularity inside the circle, extend the line from O to the singularity till it intersects the circle and draw the line from this point to P (it's perpendicular of course). By our original construction there's a perpendicular through the singularity which we see is parallel to that line through P. This puts P outside the polygon contrary to original choice-it's on a line parallel to a side of the polygon and outside it. The polygon is convex of course by the way we constructed it from the circle-it's the intersection of convex sets, half-planes, and we've just shown P to lie in the complement of one of these half-planes,i.e., P is definitely outside. Next you do analysis proper. Weren't these guys great? Some pages may be partly cut off or even missing in your copy but there are free PDF's available online if you need to remedy or copy. Still giving it a 5 for content and for making it available again. There was a text by G.N.Watson titled "Complex Integration and Cauchy's Theorem" meant to supplement this text. It gives rigorous proofs of the Jordan Curve Theorem and in depth treatment of branch points and the related notion of winding numbers. You'll recognize ideas used here as being topological like homotopy. This text makes rigorous ideas that needed to be assumed in Whittaker and Watson. These ideas were new at the time. This text is available again by Forgotten Books. A modern text which puts some emphasis on power series methods is the one by Serge Lang.P.S. You'll find two exercises on contour integration at the end of the chapter on Riemann's Zeta function (p.280 in mine) which constitute the main parts of Hardy's Theorem on its zeroes on the critical line. These effectively prove the theorem. Later results on the stubborn Riemann Hypothesis have really hinged on sharpening Hardy's arguments. I guess though Whittaker and Watson is old its ideas put forth in the development of complex analysis are still current.

The Course of Modern Analysis has much theory with formulae, but it should be use only as a reference book and not for a formal course. The derivations of the formulae are incomplete in most cases with many steps left out which make it difficult to follow. Some formulae do not have derivation but are left for to user to work out. I have used this book as reference, and I appreciate its availability. .

Whittaker & Watson is one of the most important books on analysis. Every mathematician should read it.However, it was written over a hundred years ago and there is, at the time of this writing, no public domain digitalization of the text. So instead this printing features has scans of the original work. The text is therefore smudgy and the font is too small. The result is that this printing is hard to read without a magnifier. At best, its only marginally better than reading the scan on a tablet. Some pages even have letters cropped out!

This volume is divided into 2 parts. Part I is titled The Processes of Analysis, and part II is titled The Trancendental Functions. The topics covered in the first part are standard and offer preparation for the Second Part.More modern Analysis Texts do not offer as much content on Special Functions as is presented in Part II. Much modern treatment of the functions covered in Part II seems to have been relocated to Mathematical Physics. This volume is a worthy addition to a library as a reference work for transcendental functions. The title Modern must be related to the time of publication, not today.

This book streamed the modern developments in complex analysis and its relevant areas such as complex differential equation and elliptic functions. The notions are described in a very clear way which should be a good guide for the beginners!

I am still reading this book, and I imagine it will take longer to do so than Amazon cares to wait. I really enjoy the nitty-gritty of infinite series and references to the greats at the end of the nineteenth century as they developed the concepts of converence. I would imagine that a math student taking a course in analysis would profit by reading it, along with people who need to know about special functions.

You never know what you are going to get with an Hourly History book. Some are excellent and a few slide toward the opposite end of the spectrum. This book on Galileo Galilei sits somewhere in the middle. The author spends time telling readers how important Galileo is to the world of science, yet glosses over his accomplishments with quick, one-sentence explanations that fail to educate exactly why Galileo's discoveries were important. The chapter on his trial by the Roman Catholic Church offered some details concerning the teachings of the books, and was the best part of the book far as offering information. The most glaring issue with the book is the writing style itself. The book could use a good editing, and much of the time reads like an average essay written by a student. For instance, the beginning of the sentence "Most of history has referred to Galileo as Galileo..." is understandable yet flawed. An editor might have changed this to something like "Most written history has referred to Galilei as Galileo" in order to convey the author's meaning. If this was a solitary instance of mangling the English language, it could have been overlooked. Unfortunately, these types of errors are spread throughout the book, and some paragraphs contain unrelated items that would have been better served if the author had provided more details on each subject.Fulfilling its usual promise, Hourly History will provide highlights from Galileo Galilei's life and present them in a concise form that can be read in an hour or less. Readers who struggle through the author's presentation will gain some insight into the man's life. Two-and-a-half stars.

It is impeccable to read this book after Hourly History’s “Inquisition.”(Hourly History, "Galileo Galilei", Location 18)Galileo was a great man. Where that greatness came from is still being debated in the twenty-first century. He changed the world in ways others could not; not by all of the disciplines he surrounded himself with, but in the ways be brought controversies, arguments, and problems of his time to center-stage, where they came into conflict with the culture of the day...If ignorance and stubbornness can be simply called a culture lol Well, unavoidable ignorance of the time though, but the stubbornness, they got no excuse, and it's the same today.(Kindle Location 25)“To be great is to be misunderstood.” —Ralph Waldo EmersonThis has to be because of the unavoidable ignorance of the time, so no blame on the innocent.(Kindle Locatiom 145)When Galileo published The Starry Messenger, many individuals were skeptical. Reactions ranged from great praise to disbelief to hostility...Today we all know what kind of people those who were skeptical or hostile towards Galileo's reports really were.(Kindle Location 164)...Many leading astronomers and philosophers of the day refused to believe that a man like Galileo could have uncovered such a momentous discovery. The fear of losing their authority.(Kindle Location 158)"...the authority of a thousand is not worth the humble REASONING of a single individual.” —Galileo GalileiThe book seems brief, but clearly helps us know the life and struggle of Galileo Galilei and the true face of our world that tends to accept what it wants be true, not what’s really true and right. What kindda world we’d be living if his works were still denied today? As we are more rational than those who lived before us, now we know what’s right for our world to be a better place for us and our children. We know what we should do for that. Being ignorant is just innocent, but not practicing what we think is right is a sin and crime to our next generations who gotta suffer the consequence.

Galileo Galilei was born in Pica, Italy in 1564 during the Discovery Era. Galileo became known as Galileo when people began calling him by his first name. He was a mathematician, a teacher, a lecturer, a true Renaissance Man, well educated, he loved Art and Poetry, played the lute and compromised music. In 1609 he invented the telescope which opened up a whole new world for him. He discovered the Milky Way in the galaxy, discovered Jupiter and it's moons and he studies Saturn and Vensus. He wrote and published 'The Starry Messenger'.Galileo was an amazing man in all his studies and adventures. Five centuries later people are still studying his life and is admiring him as a great man. This is one man changed the world in many ways. Some years of his life was rough but he never gave up. The book is very educational and entertaining, what a great world we live in. I Thank all the authors for writing these Hourly History Books, they are so educational. I enjoy reading them.

Galileo Galilei: A Life From Beginning to End is now my one of my favorite Hourly History book so far. I thorougly enjoyed reading every single chapter of this book. It was all so interesting and I loved learning more about Galileo's life and accomplishments.I'm super intrigued by a lot of people who lived in the Italian Renaissance but I've always been especially interested by Galileo Galilei, his genius and the way he challenged the Church. He's one of my favorite historical figures to read about. And obviously without him and his discoveries I'm sure we wouldn't be where we are today. This quick read gives us information about things like his early life, his controversial theories, his trial and when he passed away. Like I said I loved reading every chapter so this time I couldn't say what my favorite was. I did enjoy reading about the beginning of his career a lot, though.Overall, yet another great Hourly History book that I enjoyed so much. I learned a few new things about Galileo, which is always a bonus for me with nonfiction. Definitely recommended!

Love this series. Sick of every highly rated novel I pick up ending up being a young adult book. Jordan was a master story teller. His style pulls you right into his rich world, and you're pulled along and every which way as the story branches in different directions, then converges again, never losing track, always keeping you engaged. Truly masterfully woven. One thing I love is an author who creates new names that fit his world, as Jordan has done. The naming of the characters fit the regions they hail from in his world. If characters have names I've heard over and over in my own world, it seems to be a blaring indication that the author hasn't much imagination, which usually reflects in an average, shallow story. Jordan is none of that. This book carries the story forward as well as the first and second, and I'm eager to begin devouring the fourth. The story is as strong in each volume as in the first. Highly recommend to serious readers.

With this book I started to feel what many reviewers who have read the entire series (I have not) complain about: each new book has less and less new developments. In The Dragon Reborn the plot really bogs down. Very little happens till the very end and it (in my opinion) is not very satisfying. Two thirds of the book is made up of the characters traveling from place to place crossing and crisscrossing the same places, visiting the same cities. All the seemingly endless pages of travelling were really drawn out, I mean, really long winded stuff and not necessary. The main character and by far the most interesting one practically disappears during the whole book, and only reappears at the very end. I really thought the third book would delve into his psychology because of the consequences of his, shall we say, gift?Add to this endless repetitions and summaries of things already explained in the first books and the fact that the characters have settled down to a few stereotyped personality traits, and you have a third installment which doesn't live up to the first two. I mean, I already know that Nynaeve is stubborn and short tempered or that The Warder doesn't show much emotion or that Perrin is ashamed of his “capabilities” is it really necessary to explain it every single time each character reacts to some particular situation? At the same time, the female characters, while they grow stronger, get very cocky and rude for no apparent reason other than they are convinced of their own greatness and importance in the Pattern. They seem to have development a personality problem of some kind. Whats that about? At least for me, the climax of the book was kind of a letdown. All is achieved very easily after 500 pages or so of explaining how difficult achieving it would be. And nothing much is explained at the end.The Dragon Reborn did not actually bore me because the plotline is still very interesting and original. Buuuuuuuut in my opinion it falls way behind the first two books of the series.

I enjoyed this book, though slightly less than the previous two books in the series. I think the story suffered a bit from not having Rand front and center. It is hard to understand the changes in his character, I know that there is a taint on Saidin, which may explain some of his irrational behavior, but I feel like it could have been a more gradual change, and that it would be easier to understand if we got more of his pov in this book. I would have liked to have seen how Rand went from being terrified of being labeled the dragon, to being 100% on board with it, without it feeling so disjointed. I was also annoyed by the stupidity of some of the other characters. In particular, when Perrin, or Mat, or Egwene see Rand in Tear, they all write it off as a figment of their imagination, but why!?! With everything that they have experienced, why would they be surprised at anything at this point. Egwene has been told she has the gift of Dreaming, so why does she dismiss her dreams so easily? And Perrin and Co. are in Tear to look for Rand, so why is he so surprised to see him?Aside from those few things, though, I am really enjoying the overall story. Things are really beginning to happen, we are beginning to meet more of the Forsaken, the Black Ajah is doing its thing. Everytime it seems Rand has beaten Shaitan, it turns out that is not the case. With 11 more books to go in the series, I am sure there are many more false victories to go, but I am enjoying the ride, and I can't wait to see what will happen in the true last battle, Tarmon Gai'don.

Many compare this series to Lord of the Rings. They are similar in both being about journeys and adventure. However, I don't see much more in that comparison. I love The Lord of the Rings as should be no surprise for such a long lived, popular classic. My one issue with it being the lack of female characters. The Wheel of Time gave me strong, important female characters that I could not only root for, but also identify with. In addition, the entire series was well written and very entertaining. I was sad and knew I would miss the characters when I closed the last book.

I have read over 10 books about the holocaust in the last several years. As a religious Jew and a proud member of my Jewish community, I believe it is essential to remember the profound suffering of our immediate ancestors at the hands of the German Reich. Though my parents were spared the atrocities described in this book, they may have well been, had they not migrat d to America before the war. In fact, I went to school with the author of this book and had classes with her mom, the sister-in-law of the survivor (Murray). This book, like many of this genre is hard to read because of the pain and emotion it stirs, to anyone with a conscience and concern about human suffering. However it is a story well told about the power of survival and the human spirit. Highly recommend.

This book is not for the faint at heart. That being said, it is written EXTREMELY well. The writer captivates and grabs at one's heart strings from the start.. I really feel that books like this need to be required in schools across the world, so that we may not forget the horrible atrocities committed during, and leading up to WWII. "THOSE WHO FORGET HISTORY ARE BOUND TO REPEAT IT!"

I have read a lot of books on the Holocaust and this one was very interesting but very short. Not too much detail about his thoughts and feelings. But I imagine he was in shock to see such evil done to innocent people like he saw. Just can't want to think you actually witnessed it and could do nothing. It is so amazing this man survived for so long in the camps. But it stayed with him forever. No way to forget the evil he saw and felt.

I liked the book, but I feel there was alot that was left out. I felt like it was just a brush on the surface. Another 100 pages of going deeper into parts of the story, would have been good for me!

First One In, Last One Out: Auschwitz Survivor 31321 is an exceptional memoir of a Holocaust survivor and was written by Marilyn Shimon. Marilyn wrote this memoir about her Great-Uncle Murray Scheinberg. It is an amazing story that takes us through Pawiak prison in Warsaw, Tarnow prison, Auschwitz/Birkenau, Sachsenhausen, and Dachau from 1939-1945. He was to lose his wealth, his business, his home, his family, and his friends. However, he never gave up knew that the survivors would have to bear witness to the atrocities they witnessed. He was a witness at the Nuremberg trials where he helped bring to justice some of the perpetrators. Marilyn grew up listening to Uncle Murray telling his stories and her Mother wrote a book in the 1960’s; but it was never published. At that time, no one wanted to hear about the Holocaust. Marilyn became a Holocaust educator and took on the role as author of his story. It is well researched and well documented. It is definitely a memoir which should be read and shared.

Excellent story, inspirational, quick read! I enjoyed the background information, the start of the story, often this type of story begins at the concentration camp, but this book is excellent in telling the story before the Holocaust.

A real heart retching story.

A very good, but sometimes sad, write up about a lost lifestyle-the homesteader's of remote Alaska along the Yukon River watershed. Government rules and regulations eliminated the homesteader's in this area, and in doing so allowed many historical sites and dwellings to be destroyed.

Thought it would be more about the experience of paddling the river. Rapids, exciting paddling stretches, etc. It is a great read if you want the history of the Yukon and the places people have lived along its banks and why they came to the Yukon. I would not recommend it if you a re looking for paddling adventure.

Dan O'Neill is an adventurer, a historian, a "floater" (as Yukon River canoe campers are called), and an advocate for a people whose names may be last seen in these pages. This book is ostensibly a story about a float trip O'Neill makes from Dawson, in Canada's Yukon Territory, to Circle, in Alaska, through the Yukon Charley Rivers National Preserve, administered by the National Parks Service. Actually, it is seven trips condensed into one. O'Neill is the spiritual descendant of John McPhee, whom he quotes extensively as the base-line Yukon River interpreter. The reader may be forgiven if he believes that he will be treated to a combination of float trip travelogue and history of the places and people who make the country what it is. Little by little we learn that O'Neill wants to do more than report; he intends to make a statement and to leave an impact.O'Neill makes (and re-makes) a compelling case that the National Parks Service is egregiously mismanaging the wilderness it is supposed to be protecting. The NPS faces the same conflict in the Yukon Charley Rivers National Preserve that it has in other national parks. How do you preserve a natural area for people to enjoy in perpetuity when each person who visits incrementally damages the area? O'Neill argues that the Yukon Charley Rivers National Preserve differs so radically from the nation's other parks that it requires fresh thinking and a more tailored conservation regime. The lament implicit in the title is that this dramatically attractive land, inhospitable as it is, once was home to scores of rugged, subsistence pioneers, and could safely be so again under a more creative land use policy. The enduring legacy of Dan O'Neill's book will not be his administrative prescriptions, though, but his deft, economical, and often sardonic descriptions of the land and its people. We learn a great deal about the geologic history of the region, including the fact that prior to the last ice age, the river ran southward, opposite its current direction. We learn where the gold-bearing strata are located and how they were exploited during the gold rush. We trap martin and lynx, and catch king salmon to feed ourselves and chum salmon to feed our dogs, We meet characters that couldn't conceivably be made up, like Dick Cook, whom we admire for his resourcefulness and indomitable spirit, and whose body we last see face down in the river that supported him. We poke through trash middens in a sort of contemporary archaeology, and learn how to handle irascible settlers and even more irascible grizzlies.O'Neill treats us to a world which few of us are likely ever to see. "Moose, wolf, and bear have signed the mud registry in recent weeks, and I make my own prints, climb the bank, and look for a trail..." He faithfully reports and interprets his observations and gently constructs his arguments. Regrettably, however, he is not a gifted writer, and this deficiency occasionally shows, as in his purple descriptions of scenery. "The river is molten gold...the sky is a dazzling, luminous yellow where fiery clouds flash gilded edges...then I remember that the whole spinning world is a miracle, and that sometimes reality dawns more golden than dreams." And then there is the occasional error that an editor should have caught, "Sudden death killed forty-four of the fifty-five Alaskans who died in boating accidents between 2001 and 2003..." The reader may well wonder how death can be the cause of death.I recommend "A Land Gone Lonesome" to armchair "floaters" and all who are curious about the forced depopulation of the upper Yukon watershed. You will meet the colorful denizens of a world just recently past, and the remarkable stage they have exited. And if you become motivated to visit the Yukon for yourself, you can thank McPhee and O'Neill for their contrasting depictions of the Yukon River and its fatal attraction.

In A Land Gone Lonesome Dan O'Neill floats the Yukon River area visited by John McPhee over 30 years earlier. The differences over time are striking as are the differences in the authors. While McPhee was a perceptive visitor spinning a great tale, O'Neill is a long time resident, and his narration reveals a deep love of the land coupled with a keen eye towards historical perspective. He discusses in detail the effects of the National Park Service's administration, or perhaps mis-administration.If you liked McPhee, you'll love O'Neill. O'Neill has a comfortable free-flowing style appropriate for a tale about Alaska's greatest river. If you are into rural lifestyles, Alaska history, the Yukon River, or Alaska wilderness - this is a must read.

This book gave me a good view of bureaucracy at work. It's a before and after view of the rivers feeding the Yukon and the people living in a subsistence way of life. Gradually, as the government moved in and moved the subsistence folks out and now no one lives out there. A way of life destroyed. The river was full of life, but now with no one living out there, it's go e lonsome.

Not what I thought, although a canoe is the chosen form of transport this book is more a history of the Yukon that a paddling adventure. If the Yukon and the adventurers who settled there are your interest this is great book if you are interested in canoe/kayak adventures then this is not the book for you. This came up on numerous website searches for canoe/kayak adventures so not the authors fault more poor classification.

"A LAND GONE LONESOME" describes what happened in the years after "COMING INTO THE COUNTRY" depicted the alteration of life styles of "bush-dwellers, hermits, miners, trappers, and visitors to the region by the lawyers, politicians, and bureaucrats divvying up Alaska to make way for the pipeline from the North Slope. Shortly before McPhee's book, I kayaked through this region three times on my finally journey of 2,000 miles down the river to the ocean, so these books were of interest and informative to me as I knew some of the people affected by the new rulings of government power. These books depict a lot about how those in political power use and abuse those powers to force their personal ideas and philosophies on others trying to escaped the clutches of such webs of governmental control.

Ahh, the unintended consequences of self perpetuating bureaucracy. Alaska is different. Her parks and protected areas should be as well. Great narrative, incredible characters, and a harrowing bear attack. Sad that my generation will be the last to witness people of this mettle- who are able to engage in a true subsistence lifestyle that requires the tenacity and character described in these pages.
