This book takes a very scientific approach to pistol bullet terminal ballistics. The principals outlined in this book are very interesting and informative. It will certainly change the way you look at terminal performance of various calibers and the effect of bullet design.

A very detailed discussion on modeling Bullet types Through Ballistic Gelatin. As far as usefulness of the information as to how well bullet types work in the real world nothing.

The author, the late Duncan MacPherson, was an aerospace engineer involved in the US space programme who developed numerous techniques and equations to guide missiles and spacecraft. MacPherson used the skills so developed to model the dynamics of terminal ballistics. The models developed are not based on theory, but on extensive practical testing included in the text for scrutiny. The result is a 300 odd page b&w hardcover thesis on the test results and the subsequent model development. Although this book is extremely technical and aimed at the ballistic and forensic practitioner, most of it is surprisingly understandable to the lay ballistician, even though sections may require a re-read or two. Basic maths is essential. It is not a book to read from cover to cover at bed time (although it might be an excellent first acquaintance). It is a book to work through in good time while wide awake, but the reward for doing so is tremendous. A whole new world opens up to the reader. It will unfortunately not be read by the masses of hunters and shooters who have grown up on wild terminal ballistic thumb-sucking and therefore many myths will prevail, despite the existence of scientific proof to the contrary such as this. It is a truly impressive and excellent piece of ground-breaking work that should forever grow in stature amongst its readers and users. If you are prepared to work getting through it and shedding some misdirected pre-conceptions - this is a book for you.

"This remarkable book...advances wound ballistics to the status of a mature predictivescience...This superb book can provide those responsible for weapon and bulletselection with the reliable information they need to make informed choices -- tobalance intelligently the inevitable pros and cons that accompany these compromises. Itfurther provides data and insights that are of crucial importance to Wound BallisticsResearchers, Forensic Pathologists. Firearms Examiners, Trauma Surgeons, OrdnanceEngineers, Law Enforcement Personnel and others critically dependent on firearmperformance. "- Fighting Firearms, (January 1995) by Dr. Martin Fackler, M.D., President of theInternational Wound Ballistics Association"This new work in the field of wound ballistics introduces a model of bullet penetrationdynamics based on solid physics and mathematics that will interest those trying to getto the bottom of the 'stopping power' debate...Previous internal ballistics models arereviewed, analyzed and presented along with a considerable amount of testing and datadone by the author in forming his model and conclusions. Though this book is not lightreading, its graphs and clear explanations make the subject more understandable tonon-physicists. The author, an engineer who worked with the space program, drewmuch medical information from Dr. Martin Fackler and other authorities from theInternational Wound Ballistics Association."- The American Rifleman (June 1995)

One of the reviews references the late Duncan MacPherson. As of this date, 7/16/2013, Duncan MacPherson is still very much alive.

I was outlining a book proposal when I found "Traction." My proposal first explained that product development gets easier, faster, and cheaper every year, so startups no longer fail because they can't build their product. Instead, startups fail when they hit the marketing wall.According to The Economist (2014 Sep 13), "marketers say they have seen more change in the past two years than in the previous 50."According to the Harvard Business Review (2014 July-August, p. 56) "In the past decade, what marketers do to engage customers has changed almost beyond recognition....we can't think of another discipline that has evolved so quickly."It can seem like marketing is getting harder each year, but actually in some ways it's getting easier and cheaper, e.g., Facebook's targeted ads. What's needed is a guide to how marketing is changing.Unlike the zillions of e-books about Facebook marketing, Twitter marketing, etc., my book would cover and compare all marketing channels. Unlike the e-books, my book would include case studies of real companies. Unlike the marketing textbooks, my book would focus on tech startups, not on dog treat bakeries and corner grocery stores. Unlike the books that say you'll get rich if you follow their formula, my book would say that marketing is changing rapidly now, and the marketing plan that worked even a few years ago won't work now. I proposed teaching entrepreneurs instead to make small-scale experiments, see what works and what doesn't, and continuously evolve their marketing.I scrapped my book proposal because "Traction" is that book. There are some things I would add (and perhaps Weinberg and Mares will in a second edition). My proposal included case studies of both success and failure. "Traction" only has successful case studies, leading to a sense that every marketing strategy leads to success. Including both successes and failures would lead to a framework for what channels work for what types of companies. E.g., viral social media likes may work for a microbrewery, but not for colonoscopies!Points I like about "Traction":- Entrepreneurs should spend 50% of their time on product development and 50% on marketing, but product development sucks up all your time. It's more satisfying to add a new feature to your product than to spend your limited capital on a marketing test that completely fails. We feel comfortable developing our products but feel clueless marketing them.- Integration with Lean Startup. That was the book I proposed a few years ago, and Eric Reis beat me to it!- How much traction (downloads, press coverage, sales) investors want to see before they invest increases every year, as marketing gets faster and cheaper to some startups.- Every entrepreneur has to hand sell the first few customers.- Building a viral marketing campaign will take one or two engineers three to six months! I.e., viral marketing doesn't magically happen just because your product is so cool.Stuff that's missing:- Celebrity endorsements is a 20th channel.- A chapter about market research, e.g., why you should ask open-ended questions instead of closed-ended questions.- The PR chapter needs a section on finding journalist contacts, se.g., whether to use the Meltwater or Cision databases.- Tradeshows are about having outgoing, enthusiastic salespeople, not about having a flashy booth.

I've been head of marketing and strategy for startups and interesting brands for several years, and this was the first book I've ever read that is actually useful and something I frequently reference in channel, strategy and overall marketing brainstorming sessions. Why? Because it provides a comprehensive view of contemporary best-practices in marketing, without all the old baggage and fluff to which many marketers still cling. Today's marketing means you're actually responsible for revenue. If you're still doing the kind of marketing that focuses on activity and top-of-funnel vanity metrics (like how many unsuspecting tradeshow attendee badges you zapped thanks to your TV giveaway, or passing a huge seemingly impressive number of crappy MQLs to sales so you can hit your quotas), then please don't waste your time reading this. You won't get it, or you work somewhere where you can't actually apply this learning due to all the internal risk-adverse forces working against you. For everyone else who believes in the new of ways of marketing (basically, marketing without all the BS), this book and others in the series should be in your e-reader or physically sitting next to your laptop right now.

Traction was extremely helpful for me as a budding entrepreneur and author. In the book, Weinberg and Mares lay out 19 different "traction channels" everyone looking for their next client should consider. Furthermore, they challenge you to give a hard look to some of the channels you would normally dismiss without a second thought. Why? Sometimes the channel you least thought would work turns out to be highly effective.Something I appreciated about this book was how much objective research went into it. The list of traction channels wasn't something they pulled out of their backside, but rather something that resulted from extensive interviews with entrepreneurs and business people who have experienced real-life success with them. The only reason I didn't give Traction five stars is because many of the sections lacked the practical advice needed to put these strategies into action. To that extent, I felt like it left me hanging in quite a few areas. Not every reader is going to know who to contact for a PR campaign, how to get started with SEO, or the best way to setup a sales process/team. If you are looking for very specific information like this, realize that this book won't deliver it to you.Now to be fair - each of the 19 channels probably deserves its own book to describe such detail, and I don't think this book was intended to be an encyclopedic guide to implementing every channel. This book was surely intended to be more of a top-level overview. To that end, it was great for calibrating one's understanding (from a leadership/executive perspective) of each channel. It inspired me to think outside the box with my own business and projects, and I still found a lot of value in it.Anyone new to the startup world or who plans to start their own business deserves to read this book - and probably also the Lean Startup by Eric Ries. Some have said Traction and the Lean Startup go hand-in-hand, with Traction focusing more on customer acquisition and Lean Startup focusing more on product development. The build-measure-learn concept is present in each, however, and is a clear theme for all new business owners.Once again, would certainly recommend to anyone new to the startup world or entrepreneurship. It's a quick and easy read with many good ideas.

Simple, but worthwhile book. I've re-read it a few times. It's basic point is that there are (at least) 19 channels to gain traction (customers) for a product or service, and we tend to only look at a few we might be familiar with. The second point is that after traction in one channel is achived, for additional traction, a different channel or tactic is likely needed for the next phase. Detailed discussion of the different channels and examples of their use in various organizations. Definitely worthwhile for those who are doing product marketing, at any stage of an organization's growth.

Enjoyed the book, but it’s status as an “official” or “unofficial” biography seemingly makes little difference. Most things are just common knowledge about the group.

Visit hanson.net please! This is probably the most popular book put out for Hanson fans. Of course, if you're a Fanson, you will have to have it. We Fansons collect anything having to do with the band.

Who wants to know the true story about how Hanson became who they are today? This book is the best way to teach you the basics, written by Jarod Gollihare, who was a friend of theirs (also a musician). It's a GREAT account, leading you through Isaac, Taylor, and Zac's love and devotion to music and what it took for them to reach their dreams. The book is well written and truthful, as well as exciting to read and full of great pictures. I absolutely recommend it for any fans of the band!

I had to order this book from Borders because I ordered it in July, 2000. I received it the day before the Hanson concert in Tulsa. Yes, I was at the kick off concert for the "This Time Around" tour. It wasn't, at all, easy to get tickets to the Tulsa one, but I did it. I also went to the Norman, OK one the day after Zac's 15th b-day. They were both excellent. The Norman one was much better than the Tulsa one. In just 3 months time their concerts had changed a lot. Definitely for the better. Just as they've improved in their live shows, their albums keep getting better and better. I loved this book for the pure reason that it's Official. They're friends with the author and they had imput on it. All of the other books, you never know. If only, these other authors actually had imput by Hanson, not to mention, permission. Oh, FYI, I'm nowhere near being a teeny bopper. I'm 29. Yes, I live in Tulsa. No, I've never met them. The question that people ask me the most is "Why do you like Hanson?" I just say, "They're the real thing." What you see is what you get. There's no hidden motive. That doesn't happen often, in this world. Needless to say, I read the book the day that I got it. I couldn't put it down until it was done. There's so much to learn and so little time.

I really, really like this book! Especially cuz I love Hanson 2 death! I swear, I'm one of their biggest fans. Anyway, this book is really good to set all the Hanson rumors staraight. And I love the younger pictures!! The only reason I gave this book a 9 was because it didn't have obvious info I'd love to know, such as their favorite colors, and which hand they write with. Oh well...I guess we'll never know!!! I love you Zac!

The Hanson book is great! It starts out in the Early years of Hanson. There are some very cool young pictures of Hanson. It talks about where they grow up and how they entered the music business. When they git there first fame. How they work with other writer (they worked very little) writing the songs for Hanson. It show how hanson struggle to the music business and did very well.

This book is the best book ever!!! It is all official...so you know all the info is true. The author did a very good job of putting this together!!! I would recomend this to any fan of Hanson

The Last Gentleman Adventurer: Coming Of Age In The Arctic, by Edward Beauclerk Maurice

From Publishers Weekly

Maurice was a 16-year-old boy from a struggling British family when a missionary from the Canadian Arctic paid a visit to his boarding school in 1930. Impressed by an accompanying film about life in the frozen territories, Maurice immediately sought employment as an apprentice with the Hudson's Bay Company and was sent to a remote trading post, where news from the outside world was often limited to a short weekly radio broadcast. He was so young, the local Inuit tribe nicknamed him "The Boy," but, as revealed over the course of this charming memoir, he was gradually able to win their trust and admiration. Eventually placed in charge of his own post, Maurice—having already learned the Inuit language—became increasingly involved in the daily lives of the local tribe members. His accounts of their dramatic romantic entanglements are understatedly amusing, as is the dry observation that he himself has been selected by one of the women as a suitable mate. Maurice, who died in 2003, recounts his youthful adventures in a graceful style reminiscent of the great 20th-century explorers. Though his tale is somewhat more subdued than their exploits, it proves just as engrossing. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Many of the old books of this genre I read are written as if the natives are children or savages who need conversion, education and enlightenment. Edward Beauclerk Maurice impressed me with his acceptance of the culture and beliefs of the Inuit/Eskimo people among which he lived for several years. He learned their language and lived among them, sharing their food, clothing and homes, meanwhile growing from a teenager into a man. Maurice recounts his years as a clerk at a Hudson Bay trading post with so much honesty, self deprecating humor and respect that you can't help but like him. Because he was so young (16) when he was first apprenticed to the Hudson Bay Company, he relied on the older men in the village to teach him to hunt, trap, fish and survive. Eventually he becomes a respected man and hunter, but he was reassigned unwillingly to another post every year until his contract was fulfilled.I thought it was sad that he didn't return to the Arctic later in his life, and it's unfortunate that this is the only book he wrote about his experiences. After I finished the book, I re-read the forward by Lawrence Millman. I got a lot more out of it after getting to know the characters and the story.

Of the many, many books I've read involving Arctic expeditions and experiences, this one is one of the best, among the ranks of Gontran De Poncins' 'Kabloona' and Vladimir Albanov's 'In The Land of the White Death.' I found it to have a lot in common with 'Kabloona': while the locations are rather far, the experiences are similar. 'The Last Gentleman Adventurer' also provides a lot of information about the Hudson's Bay Company, which is a fascinating chapter in northern Canadian history. At the time of the documented experiences, this young man was essentially alone (in the beginning among 2 others) in one of the most remote outposts on earth. His interest and respect for Inuit life develops and broadens throughout the book, and in his adventures he meets many different characters. What is delightful about this character is that he sees the Inuit with respect to his own morals, ethics and upbringing, but without judging them. He spends a number of years in Pangnirtung and moves down to Frobisher Bay. Curiously, his last year (alluded to in the novel to be spent at Southampton Island) was not documented in the book, and I am unsure of why.I found his relationships with the Inuit people in this book to be very inspiring; his encounters with the often harsh world around him allowed him to grow and adapt. While frustration was often present with one situation or another, he left his post at Ward Inlet with an incredible love and respect for his Inuit friends; while warned in the beginning not to become too wrapped up with "those people," it is the curiosity and willingness to learn that makes this novel, 'Kabloona' and also the adventures of Stefansson incredibly interesting. While whaling and exploration often exploited the talents of the Arctic people, there are few memoirs of people who sought to learn and survive with their knowledge.

A compelling narrative about the experience of a very young man from the U.K. going to work for the Hudsons Bay Company in the Eastern Arctic during the Great Depression. Life was tough and harrowing, and yet rewarding in terms of unique experiences and warm relationships. It brought back some memories for me regarding my experiences in the Eastern, Western and High Arctic during the Seventies and early Eightes....

This was an amazing book. I just loved it. I have read so many adventure, biography and history books. But this one filled a completely different notch. I wish I had words to explain how I connected with his story. I am not implying I am a gentleman or explorer. It is a reflection on his writing. I recommend this book to everyone that would like to see a bigger, better world.

Have you ever wanted to be an adventurer? But, did not cherish'getting your feet wet' on a milder note, or be subjected to somethinga bit more dangerous to ponder? The last gentleman adventurer Edward Beauclerk Maurice has, in myopinion, given the reader of this extraordinary book the uniqueexperience {in the comfortable armchair} of living the exhilaratingbeauty of the Arctic Realm. His captivating memoir puts us there! Why did he write only one book?Dag StombergSt. Andrews, Scotland

I absolutely loved this book and the author's writing style. I found my self slowing down the reading as a reached the end of the book because I did not want his story to end!! Highly recommended!!

Excellent book! Made me feel like I was there!

This is beautifully written in the matter-of-fact tone of a good friend telling you his story. The author has a wonderful, warm, curious, and self deprecating attitude that brings the people and place to life. The lifestyle and culture at the time of his tenure in the Arctic as a very young man was still very close to pure subsistence living and I found it fascinating.

Review

"[An] exuberant, philosophically ambitious self-help book for the creatively challenged." -- The New York Times Book Review"An entertaining 'how to' guide, The Creative Habit isn't about getting the lightning bolt of inspiration, but rather the artistic necessity of old-fashioned virtues such as discipline, preparation and routine." -- Cathleen McGuigan, Newsweek"The Creative Habit emphasizes the work habits that lead to success." -- C. Carr, O: The Oprah Magazine"Twyla Tharp's amazingly plain-spoken treatise...is a frank, honest, and tough-love testament essentially arguing that art and creativity are matters of hard, old-fashioned work." -- Sid Smith, The Chicago Tribune"[A]s accessible, smart and eye-opening as her dance." -- Linda Winer, Newsday"Though its context is a choreographer's world, its principles are universally applicable and sound....It could change your life." -- Elizabeth Zimmer, The Village Voice

"I will keep stressing the point about creativity being augmented by routine and habit. Get used to it. In these pages a philosophical tug of war will periodically rear its head. It is the perennial debate, born in the Romantic era, between the beliefs that all creative acts are born of (a) some transcendent, inexplicable Dionysian act of inspiration, a kiss from God on your brow that allows you to give the world The Magic Flute, or (b) hard work.If it isn't obvious already, I come down on the side of hard work. That's why this book is call The Creative Habit. Creativity is a habit, and the best creativity is a result of good work habits. That's it in a nutshell."~ Twyla Tharp from The Creative HabitTwyla Tharp is awesome. One of the greatest choreographers in the world, she'd created more than 130 (!!!) dances for her company as well as for everyone from the Joffrey Ballet to London's Royal Ballet. In this great book, Twyla shares some uber-Big Ideas on how we can develop our Creative Habit to more consistently rock it.Hope you enjoy a few of my favorites:1. Rituals of Preparation - They're a must.2. Mozart's Genius = Discipline + work ethic.3. Give Me 1 Week Without - Silly distractions.4. Busy Copying - If you want to be great.5. Reading - It does a mind good.To find 250+ more reviews visit http://bit.ly/BrianReviews

This is likely the best book on creativity you'll read this year. I'm not a dancer (I'm a fiction author), but The Creative Habit addresses all artists and business minds too. This is more than just practical suggestions to stimulate your creative juices and not the same ol' you've read before. Generous with deep perspectives, philosophy, and real life insights. What do you do if you are in a rut with your project or story or music? How can you unleash the energy you need to move ahead? "Muscle memory" was eye opening for me. Do you need to face your fears? Twyla has got something to say about that. How do you become lucky? This book is full of answers.

Twyla Tharp's book is a great resource for the "left brained" creative. Although written by a choreographer, Tharp uses her experience as a backdrop to paint solid mental models, and does not beat the reader over the head with her trade. Interspersed with useful exercises and insightful anecdotes, this is the book I recommend first and foremost to those who ask me for resources on creativity... especially my analytical colleagues in finance, accounting, and IT. Very solid depth yet very digestible for the casual reader.

"Creativity is not a gift from the gods," says Twyla Tharp, "bestowed by some divine and mystical spark." It is the product of preparation and effort, and it's within reach of everyone who wants to achieve it. All it takes is the willingness to make creativity a habit, an integral part of your life: In order to be creative, you have to know how to prepare to be creative. In The Creative Habit, Tharp takes the lessons she has learned in her remarkable thirty-five-year career and shares them with you, whatever creative impulses you follow--whether you are a painter, composer, writer, director, choreographer, or, for that matter, a businessperson working on a deal, a chef developing a new dish, a mother wanting her child to see the world anew. When Tharp is at a creative dead end, she relies on a lifetime of exercises to help her get out of the rut, and The Creative Habit contains more than thirty of them to ease the fears of anyone facing a blank beginning and to open the mind to new possibilities. Tharp's exercises are practical and immediately doable--for the novice or expert. In "Where's Your Pencil?" she reminds us to observe the world--and get it down on paper. Amen! In "Coins and Chaos," she provides the simplest of mental games to restore order and peace. In "Do a Verb," she turns your mind and body into coworkers. In "Build a Bridge to the Next Day," she shows how to clean your cluttered mind overnight. To Tharp, sustained creativity begins with rituals, self-knowledge, harnessing your memories, and organizing your materials (so no insight is ever lost). Along the way she leads you by the hand through the painful first steps of scratching for ideas, finding the spine of your work, and getting out of ruts into productive grooves. In her creative realm, optimism rules. An empty room, a bare desk, a blank canvas can be energizing, not demoralizing. And in this inventive, encouraging book, Twyla Tharp shows us how to take a deep breath and begin! Twyla Tharp's rich and remarkable The Creative Habit is a book I will keep close at hand for re-reading and re-inspiring ...f-f-f-frequently. It is one of the most highlighted, underlined, marginal thoughts notes books I have in a library chock full of creativity books. This one is one of the top five on my list.

While I am not a dancer, I am a creative soul. Ms. Tharp uses her dance and choreography as examples, but speaks directly to artists in any genre as she describes the creative process. This book as thrilled my creative spirit and inspired me to allow myself to go beyond the self-imposed limits that I had unknowingly placed on myself.

It's helpful. In a nutshell, it tells the reader to make a habit out of the work it takes to be creative. It has exercises to help keep one's focus. But some of the exercises are more based on trying to answer existential questions about yourself. The author uses herself as a test subject for these exercises and she naturally comes back to her beginnings and the innate reasons for being as a resource to gather creative ideas. But I couldn't finish the book because the author kept talking about herself the entire time outside of said exercieses and then uses famous figures in history to support her choices in life. Despite her intentions, her need to validate her career choices show up whenever she talks about her unique name, her upbringing, her earlist memory, etc. I appreciate that her book's main message is that ingenuity, creativity, and talent all result from unglamourous, habitual, consistent, hard work. But that message is overrun by the author's introspection of herself.

Nice intro to flamenco with a few interesting photos.

I am both a flamenco dancer and photographer. I am luke warm about this book. The layout was poor--the text was too wordy and the pictures seemed more like calendar art than fine art photographs. I owned this book for a month before selling it to a local book store. My advice is keep searching there must be better books out there.

I am new to flamenco. I have read Emma Martinez's book "Flamenco" which flooded me with information! Great book! This book is a good source too and gave me some information that Martinez's lack. One example, that Hindu dancers where entertaining in Spanish courts around 500 B.C.! The author highlights the similarities of flamenco, bullfighting, and the Mass as the "Holy Trinity" of Spanish culture with good points. And another parallel with Greek tragedyl. The reading is interesting and the photographs are great! One Amazon critic is disappointed that Juan Serrano is not mentioned but the book is not solely based on flamenco guitar and hence many great players are not mentioned. But it does cover a lot of ground regarding flamenco dance, song, guitar, history and tradition. I would recommend it. The only reason why I don't give it a 5 star rating is because I am biased and wanted to know a lot more about the guitar players too! But there are plenty of other sources for that.

I'm thrilled to find a book published so recently (2000) that does such a tremendous job of covering the topic both factually and aesthetically. Reviewer Jennifer Guerra has said it all, so I'll not repeat. For you art lovers, just take a look at the first few photographs. The rest do not disappoint. For you who want to learn more about flamenco, start at the beginning with the most comprehensive discussion of the origin of the word "flamenco" that I've ever seen. The rest is as satisfying. All that's missing is the guitar in your own hands, the song in your own throat, the dance shoes on your own feet. Not ready to do that? Enjoy this book instead!

This coffee-table sized, lavishly illustrated book presents a gorgeous panorama of flamenco in Spain, from its origins with the Gypsies of Andalucia to the modern Nuevo Flamenco movement. The text is thorough, comprehensive, and supremely interesting. Edwards' style flows nicely among the many photographs, never failing to follow this engaging detail or that, and always presenting the art of Flamenco in its truest light: from artists to its impact upon Spanish culture. Words cannot adequately express the beauty of Haas's photographs; the man deserves at least an extra hundred pages. Dancers whirl in blurs of light and fabric; ancient cantadores sing with all the passion of their soul; a pair of Gypsies laugh and play guitar in the light of a barrel-fire. Haas effectively - and gorgeously - captures the very heart of Flamenco in his photos. The book is further enhanced by a number of smaller, black-and-white, historic photos and illustrations, bringing the masters of the past to life. Enough good things cannot be said about this book - order a copy today!

The Haas/Edwards Flamenco is worth more than its price for the photographs alone. They are lush, seductive, and captivating, even if one has no particular interest in flamenco as an art. Miraculously, the prose comes very close to living up to the photographs it accompanies. It's a careful, accurate account of the development of flamenco. If your flamenco shelf has room for only two books, they should be Donn Pohren's Art of Flamenco, for the encyclopedia and the "insider's" view, and this one for the overall story and the pictures that capture the art so well.

I just cannot believe that the Maestro Juan Serrano from Spain hailed as "The King of Flamenco Guitar" was nowhere to be found in this book. Whoever did the research really missed out. I have had the pleasure of seeing Juan Serrano perform on two continents. He is a master who has played Carnegie Hall, Washington, D.C. and received numerous accolades from many countries, including Spain. Maestro Serrano has even brought Flamenco guitar and teaching to the university level in the U.S.A. and writes teaching books through MelBay, Inc. About the best I can say about this book is that they had a good idea with some nice photos, but did an incomplete job. I am a true fan of many guitarists including Paco de Lucia and Paco Pena, but this omission is almost unbelievable.

If you like latin dance and Spanish culture, you will adore Flamenco! The photos and text blend together to provide a sensitive and in-depth look at this centuries-old art form. A marvelous book on the topic, professionally done in every way. I am delighted with it.

Dresden being Dresden, we can count on quality action, wit, and heart through almost every book (really every one after the first couple, warmups). But this is one that just has a way of hitting a notch or two harder than that high standard, again and again.Let's see: some extra-powerful moments with Thomas, Molly, Murphy, Elaine (yes really), Lasciel (hooo boy), Marcone, Lara Raith, Ramirez and the next generation of wizards, and the Conspiracy Behind It All... This is also where you'll find one of Harry's coolest spells (involving a fireball and Lake Michigan), an already-awesome formal duel that goes even more wrong than you'd expect, and possibly Harry's greatest line in the whole series: "Are you kidding? Everyone loves a wise***, as long as he's not talking to them."If you want to try Harry out with just one book and truly don't mind a few spoilers (there being eight previous books), this is the place to start.

Chicago has been hit with a rash of suicides. All women. All entry-level practitioners of magic. Karrin Murphy of the Chicago Special Investigations Unit asks wizard Harry Dresden to inspect the latest "suicide" scene. Utilizing his magical senses, Harry realizes the victim did not kill herself--her emotions were manipulated to do herself harm. And who has the power to bend human emotions to their will? The White Court of Vampires. And who is the White Court vampire residing in Chicago full-time? Unfortunately, it's Harry's half-brother, Thomas. So Harry has some real incentive to exonerate his brother; his adventures in doing so--along with rounding up and dueling some malicious White Court vampires in a showdown for the ages--make up the action-packed WHITE NIGHT, the 9th installment of Jim Butcher's deliciously fun Dresden Files series.Several characters return for this installment, including potential romantic interest Murphy. Molly Carpenter, Harry's impulsive apprentice, plays a role, as does Thomas himself. Deadly Lara Raith, Thomas's sister and the head of the White Court, returns--but the ultimate reintroduction comes in the form of mob kingpin Gentleman Johnny Marcone. When Johnny and his hired thugs come blasting into the White Court lair to save Harry and fellow wizard Carlos Ramirez from grotesque ghouls released from the Nevernever, it's a bona fide page turner. And, as always, Harry is never far away from an off-the-cuff quip; he may be slicing and dicing relentless waves of ghouls, but he's never going to take things seriously. Also, as always, the novel is furiously paced; Butcher's novels move like a runaway freight train. Look for a surprise ending between the two brothers. In WHITE NIGHT Harry has never been better; this is one fun read that will have readers happily reaching for the next installment.~D. Mikels, Esq.

Jim butcher has done it again! The Dresden series just keeps getting better and better. Set in a world not much unlike our own where a secret society of mage's keeps the peace Dresden ( A PI) goes around solving crimes/ supernatural occurrences. I just cant quit reading these books! The order of the books and a very brief synopsis of each so if you cant remember which one you last read. As I had to look it up when reading them I thought this might be helpful. Warning this has some spoilers but will try and be bland enough you can just figure out where you have read to.sorry for only limited links amazon only allows 10Storm Front - First book In which Dresden fights Warlock Victor Sells and saves mob boss Johnny MarconeFool Moon – Second book in which Dresden fights FBI hexen wolves and Macfinn (werewolf)Grave Peril– Third book in which Dresden unwittingly sets off a war between the Red court and the white councilSummer Knight– fourth book in which Dresden as emissary to the white court secures passage for the white council in the lands of winterDeath Masks– Fifth book in which Dresden fights a duel in wriggly field(to a draw...) I have been waiting for a series like this. Superb writing. Growing complexity that doesn't get me crazy trying to keep things straight. Butcher is so good that he makes complex seem simple. That's quite a trick. And I'm really invested in the characters. Harry, the only wizard listed in the Chicago phone book. Mouse, the 200 pound temple dog. Bob the skull. Murphy the 5' nothing police special investigations officer. Harry's buddy. I can't spend any more time writing this. I need to get on with reading this long (thank heavens) series. I'm only on book 9. And it keeps getting better. How does Butcher DO this???? Obviously there is magic involved.
