First a critique of the review process. I hate that Amazon insists that I choose one of their descriptive words to "describe the plot of this book." They gave me the choices of "predictable," "some twists," or "full of surprises," none of which are an apt summary of The Red Tent. Many thoughtful reviews have already been posted. I will affirm that it was wonderful to read this story, told from the point of view of the women. In those times, women were treated as chattel and the only power they had was that of producing sons. They claimed that power, and it was fascinating. I also liked the portrayal of the community of women and what they brought to the family economy, I hope that part is "true."I love the historical fiction quality of the book. The alternative perspectives from Biblical literalism is a relief. The alternate perspective on Dinah's "rape" is worthy of contemplation. In today's world, there are "honor killings" that sometimes occur when women have sex outside of marriage, whether it's consensual or rape. We have a modern context for seeing women who don't have self determination, whose marriages are arranged, or consent still only comes with a price. It's not that hard to see the possibility of an alternate reality for Dinah. It certainly makes for a great story. I am fascinated by the tensions and textures created by the encounters with people of differing beliefs, the women practicing the old ways, those who don't, the paganism, those following the God of Abraham, and then the Egyptians. It is interesting to follow how those beliefs color their lives and how they interact with people of differing beliefs. One can also experience that in the reviews here on Amazon!I do not find the story anti-male or anti-Bible. When one recalls that men had all the power, then tragic use of power is on the men. But other aspects of power appear in the encounters between the shepherd and the king, and Dinah amongst the Egyptians, etc. The tensions of religion and culture and social position within the tribe and beyond are part of the story.I've tried to write without spoilers. It's a great book. One can be a person of faith without being insulted by a single syllable in this book. Criticisms from 2000 are interesting, but I think that time is on the side of deep appreciation for The Red Tent.

Being Russian Orthodox (where, at least in our little corner of the world, Bible reading is for the priests and not only not encouraged, but is not a thing at all for the laypeople), I can hardly comment on the differences between this retelling and the original text. What I can say is that this book is an insight, however fictional, into the lives of women at a time when they were but footnotes in the history of men, if mentioned at all. I would recommend The Red Tent to anyone who wants more than read a footnote, or anyone, who, like me, had trouble even starting reading the Bible, specifically for the reason that the stories told are missing half the people. Ignore the controversy and just read it. This book is worth judging for yourself. To me, it was worth reading just for a glimpse of time, even if only imagined, when at least someone didn't see being a woman (childbirth, menstruation, etc.) as being cursed by uncleanliness. There are countless women and girls even today, all over the world, whose futures are maimed and ruined just for this reason. There are people out there who are working hard to change this attitude, and a book like this, a new perspective, can help more than an argument.

This is not a good book for someone who is trying to learn the story of Jacob. I read half and had to stop. At one point in the story, it talks about Jacob telling the story of Abram. However, the author writes that Sarai was a priestess, and that a goddess came upon her and made her with child. This is not at all what the Bible teaches. There are many things in the Bible that you can let your mind wonder about like how the conversation went between Jonathan and David when Saul tries to kill David and how the people of Egypt were probably screaming and crying when God was sending plagues. However, the Bible is very clear on what happened to Abram and Sarai, and it had absolutely nothing to do with a goddess. Also, the Bible clearly states that Dinah was raped not in love. I would just suggest that you be careful when reading this and understand that the Bible does not agree with many of the things written in this book!

This is the second d time I've read this book. Know, I don't reread books. I have recommended this book since the first time I read it, back in my 20's, but now that I'm older, I felt it deserved a second review. I fell in love all over again, but for different reasons. The first time I was in awe that's actually liked it. I loved the celebration ration of a strong female character and heroine. Now, I still love it for the same reasons but in a different way. I love her quiet strength. Her resolve. Her confidence. Her self-awareness. It was a book anew to me. And a celebration of womanhood all over in a more mature way. Still in love and would recommend all over again!!!

I normally love historical novels. I found The Red Tent very informative with regard to the life-styles, and traditions of the time.I did find it a bit long-winded in places and switched to speed-reading whereas I normally like to "savor" the literature that I read.I still enjoyed the book and have recommended it to my book club

Extraordinary story, and a very unique one, which enhanced my enjoyment. Even before I finished, I wanted to go back to the Book of Genesis and refresh my memory about the characters and their lineage. The bible, in most instances, gives little history of its women, and it was truly refreshing to read a fictional first-person narrative from a barely-mentioned woman of that time period, telling us her version of her life. I was particularly drawn into the sisterhood of the red tent--the practices of the time, and how women survived primitive conditions, especially primitive births. But I also wanted to know more about the men in Dinah's family, and what happened to them. Fascinating book and stellar accomplishment, taking me into the ancient world for several pleasant hours.

In the past few decades scholars of late antiquity, such as Peter Brown and Walter Goffart, have put forth the notion that the Roman Empire didn't fall violently, but rather “transformed” gently and peacefully into a new multi-ethnic society ruled by a series of Germanic kings.Bryan Ward-Perkins will have none of that. His book, along with Peter Heather's “The Fall of the Roman Empire: A New History,” is a stringent corrective that seeks to demonstrate that Rome fell violently, with a catastrophic plunge in living standards. The novelty of Ward-Perkins' book lies inhow he uses archaeological evidence such as pottery shards, tile roofs, and stone construction to show how poor, illiterate, and backward Europe became after imperial Rome disintegrated. You know things were bad when even the cows got smaller. In part one of the book, titled The Fall of Rome, Ward-Perkins begins with a short discussion of the controversy mentioned above and examines how historians from Gibbon on have interpreted Rome's demise. He then looks at eye-witness accounts of the period. What did people who lived through the period, figures like Leo, Bishop of Rome, Hydatius, another bishop in Spain, and the monk Severinus of Noricum have to say about the Germanic invasions? Not surprisingly, they recount years of murder, arson, bloodshed, and horror. Hydatius even connects the arrival of the Germans in his area with the four scourges mentioned in the Book of Revelations and claims that mothers were driven by hunger to kill and eat their own children. After demonstrating the violence of the Germanic invasions and terrifying us with descriptive scenes of anarchy and chaos, Ward-Perkins spends 50 pages examining how and why this happened. The period from 376, when the Goths first invaded, to 476, when Odovacar deposed Romulus Agustulus, is terribly complicated, with dozens of main actors, abrupt reversals of fortune, betrayal, unexpected death, heroic struggle, and the like. Ward-Perkins does a serviceable job of leading the reader through this maze, but you'll need some background in the period to really make sense of it. Peter Heather's account has more detail, cohesion, and narrative energy, so my advice is to read him first. In the second part of the book, titled the End of Civilization, Ward-Perkins looks at the Roman economy before and after the Germanic invasions. Using archaeological evidence gleaned from diggings all over the Roman Empire, he shows how even the poor benefited from the fruits of Rome's sophisticated and complex economy. With access to well-made pottery, leather and metal goods, coins, tile roofs, and stone buildings, the Roman everyman of 2,000 years ago enjoyed a standard of living that would not be reached again in many parts of Europe for 1,000 years.Mr. Ward-Perkins also makes us realize how intellectual life, literacy, and the higher arts always rest on a certain level of material wealth and sophistication. While pots, coins, and tile roofs might seem boring, their presence indicates specialized training and knowledge, and without them, not only are we deprived of good plumbing, we are bereft of art, philosophy, and literary culture.I loved this book; it is beautifully written and full of arcane information, obscure authors, excellent charts, graphs and maps, and solid original scholarship, In short, it is a history buff's delight. Find it and read it--your view of Rome will never be the same.

The goal of this short volume (considering the possible scope of such a study) is to put forward the author’s case for his claim that the Western Roman Empire did actually “fall” in the commonly understood sense, refuting some more modernistic interpretations. Some authors assert that the empire simply entered a prolonged period of slow decline; others even more radically describe this as a “transformation,” suggesting that post-Empire late antiquity, although different, was somehow just as good or better than the original, that people were freer or otherwise better off, etc.It may (as some reviewers assert) be a consensus view that the Western Empire did not signal the end of civilization, and that the invaders attempted to continue administering the empire. The author grants that assertion but with qualifications. He states at one point that “the fifth century invasions caused these difficulties, and brought down the ancient economy in the West. However, this does not mean that the death of the sophisticated ancient world was intended by the Germanic peoples. The Invaders entered the Empire with a wish to share in its high standard of living, not to destroy it...” My own conclusion, based in part on this book, is that wittingly or not, the invaders killed the goose that laid the golden egg, and that however much they may have wanted to preserve the system, they lacked the knowledge and the civil structures needed to keep civilization at its former level. In the above respect, I felt the author made a strong and believable case for his point of view. He describes what the effects on those who lived through and after the fall likely were. He explains what the archeological record can and cannot tell us, and when he is extrapolating or theorizing about what happened rather than reporting actual findings, he makes this clear. He accurately points out what many writers gloss over, which is that the fall really occurred in the Western Empire, and that the Eastern Empire actually withstood the initial invasions quite well and continued to prosper for a much longer time.A few readers reported that they found this a little boring. I felt it was quite readable and well-annotated, and did not unnecessarily belabor its points. The author made several interesting observations; one concerned graffiti and what it shows us about the level of a society’s literacy. Another one I’ve found particularly pertinent to many historical works was his statement that “there is inevitably a close connection between the way we view our own world and the way we interpret the past.” This observation alone goes a long way towards explaining why there are so many “revisionist” histories out there; many authors are trying to rewrite the past in order to justify their vision of what the present should be like. This particular book has no obvious political or social agenda in that respect. The book does NOT provide much detail about WHY the Western Empire fell. It does not get into any real detail about the condition of the empire in 400 AD that he believes made the Western Empire vulnerable to the barbarian invasions, and definitely does not attempt to analyze what may have happened in Roman society that led to that state. That does not appear to be its purpose, and in retrospect, I do not view that as a shortcoming. That ground has been well-covered by others, so those looking for something more comprehensive that includes this particular kind of analysis will need to look elsewhere.

Superbly readable and a pleasure. Ward-Perkins offers a corrective to the new revisionists who insist that the Roman Empire went gently into that good night. It was neither gentle nor good. The end of that civilization was social and economic catastrophe. Using archeological and textual evidence, the author reveals the depth of the collapse and a plunge into a chaos that did not end for centuries in the West. The book is suprisingly short but gives clear, concise evidence for the author's thesis.

Part of my reason to read this book was to see if there were any parallels in the fall of Rome to what's happening today in the West. Turns out, plenty, if you care to look.I loved it/It was amazing5/5 Goodreads5/5 AmazonFurther Readingo The Decline and Fall of Europe (and maybe the West), Time, August 22, 2011o The New Europeans, National Geographic, September 28, 2016

In just having recently completed a development project creating portlets for the first time with a Java Portlet Specification 2.0 (JSR 286) compliant portal server, I hope I can provide some insight into the effectiveness of this book, since I used it to hit the ground running. Simply put, I agree with some of the other reviews here that this book is very well put together. The progression of content that the author provides from one chapter to the next is effective for those newly tackling portal development. As a consultant in such a situation, I especially appreciated Chapter 1 ("Introducing Portals and Portlets"), Chapter 2 ("The Portlet Lifecycle"), Chapter 3 ("Portlet 2.0 API: Portlet Objects and Container-runtime Options"), Chapter 6 ("Using the Portlet Tag Library"), Chapter 7 ("Getting Started with Spring Portlet MVC"), and Chapter 11 ("Communicating with Other Portlets"). The UML sequence diagrams that the author provides greatly aided the material. And believe it or not, even at almost 600-pages the author even thankfully left out the fluff that one can unfortunately often expect in other developer texts of this genre. That said, however, potential readers need to be aware of what this book does and does not provide. Unless the reader is using Liferay, the most frequently referenced portal server in this book, they should not expect to be able to get up to speed with any specific portal server. My target portal server, for example, was IBM WebSphere Portal 6.1.0, and this specific portal server is only mentioned in passing a few times by the author. Usage of the XML Configuration Interface, commonly known as XMLAccess, for example, which is a requirement when using the portal server in my project environment, was not covered. Personalization rules and managing portal pages was also not covered. As with other Java specifications, much is left up to implementers with regard to what is under the covers, but as with application servers, portal servers also provide features that sit outside these specifications. While I did not purchase this text expecting that the WebSphere implementation would be covered, as a novice in this space I also was not aware how much I would be dependent on product specific features. Well recommended guide and reference for those new to portal development, especially with Spring Portlet MVC.

This book has been my crown savior in a sea of google searching! There isn't a single source that is as comprehensive as this book. If you're looking to get in to portlet development, this is the best place to start. A little bit of background in servlets does make the reading go a bit faster, but is not required. Step by step guides with images and examples fill every chapter alongside detailed explanations and definitions. Thank you for taking the time to put together such a comprehensive book!

I am working in portal/portlet development for the last 2 years and I was looking for a good Portal book for the last 2 years or so. This is the first major book for portal and portlet technology. After reading this I would like to congratulate author as he has given a book which is helpful for new as well as experienced portal/portlet developers. This book gives a complete insight of Portlet technology as well as Spring Portlet MVC framework with good code examples. The author has covered almost everything necessary for portlet development e.g. portal framework explanation, various frameworks that can be used for portlet development and advanced topics like Ajax integration with portlet technology with examples including several JavaScript libraries and Ajax frameworks like DOJO,DWR.This book is a must have for all Portlet developers.

This book was very well written, it was clear, and the code examples built and deployed without fixing. It was comprehensive, and unlike most of the eBooks I have purchased, it seems to have been edited by somebody who speaks the same language the book was written in...

Read this book first, then download the documentation for the portlet container you plan to write on.I have read many books on portal development, and Liferay development in particular and this book is by far the best for a serious Java developer wanting to increase their portal development skill in areas that can be applied across portal containers. Many of the books out now are little more than an introduction to the portal container or an extension to the admin Guide. This book goes where others don't. It actually has examples that the reader can follow step by step, without the many headaches the other books require. The source code is well written and displays many nice features of Spring as well as the portlet spec. This book puts the "in Action" back in the brand many of us once relied on for step by step IT instruction. This book will make you a better developer in the Spring MVC space and get you proficient in the portal space as well. The book covers validation, security, localization, caching, Portal Admin, portlet tag library, inter portlet communication, Spring Portlet MVC, Hibernate, Spring annotations, integrating portlets with databases, personalization of portlets, Ajax portlets, iFrame portlets, wicket portlets, WSRP, building a custom portal. It is both a great learning tool for portlet development and great polisher for Spring skills as well.If you do any portlet development or are thinking of doing any you need this book. If you are working with Liferay at all then this book is a MUST HAVE for you, even more than the admin guide.

I teach a course in Russian politics and have read numerous biographies of Stalin. I wondered how anyone could stretch the story out into three massive volumes. Kit kin did it by creating a brilliant study of Russian history from the late 1800s on. Of course there is a very detailed coverage of Stalin’s own life, but also the best analysis of every aspect of Russian society and politics, both tsarist and soviet that I have seen. I’m just starting volume two and only hope that the author is taking care of himself because, if volume three doesn’t follow, I will have nothing to live for.

I'll keep this short, as I'm not an expert on anything. From what i had, casually, read about the period covered by this book, my impression was that Stalin was a not-so-intelligent, but cunning, thug who brute-forced his way into power on the backs of foe and friend, alike. Maybe there are some "seminal" biographies that arrive at just this conclusion. After finishing this book, my original impression has been revised somewhat. Stalin was a quite intelligent and cunning, Marxist ideologue who, with a mixture of cleverness and good luck, brute-forced his way into power on the backs of foe-and friend alike to carry out his conception of the unfinished work of V. Lenin.I only want to respond to one part of the author's depiction of Stalin's character, his growing paranoia. First of all, almost all of the key actors in this book were paranoid. Second, given the external and internal threats to Bolshevism in thes years, who wouldn't have become paranoid? Finally, Stalin was no more paranoid than your average anti-communist Western leader or high level security bureaucrat during the Cold War.I also disagree that the book is badly written. I liked the author's casual style, and despite the details and length of the book, I found it very captivating, as I had little knowledge about this period or Stalin. The book made lasting impression on me, although it interfered with my sun-bathing during the few summer days we were able to enjoy this year.

This is such a marvelous book that has guaranteed I will read the full trilogy. I started this journey with Anne Applebaum's great book 'Red Famine - Stalin's War on Ukraine' which despite enjoying immensely I realised I would enjoy more if I knew more about Stalin and the Russian Revolution as Anne's book assumes some knowledge I didn't have. This then triggered me to read the wonderful Simon Sebag Montefiere book 'Red Tsar' another wonderful book that covered Stalin from 1928, but really kicks off in 1934 through to his death, this meant I needed more knowledge of Stalin's earlier years. Simon himself via twitter suggested this book by Kotkin & what a great book, truly stunning, more than a book this is an achievement, the depth of insight you get, not just into Stalin but into the societal fissures that made a Stalin figure possible, with a deep dive into Tsarist Russia you develop an understanding of how the Bolshevik coup was made possible, then despite kind of skipping through Stalin's role in the Civil War and even the Revolution itself, the information given on that period and Trotsky gives you the background you need to understand the final 2/3 of the book where the Stalin v Trotsky war is covered in minute detail.Just a wonderful wonderful book, can not recommend it highly enough. If you have any desire to learn about Stalin, The Russian Revolution or even Tsarism, then I can't imagine there is a better book out there to kick off your learning. I may come back to add more to this review lately, as I still have the epilogue to read, but finishing the period mentioned in the title [Birth to 1928] i cannot express how delighted I am to have discovered this book, I truly thank Simon for recommending it, Kotkin for writing it and whoever the publisher is for committing to publish such an exhaustive work. Read this wonderful book

This is a good book. It suffers from some significant flaws but is definitely worth reading.First three negative comments, then the positive. 1) Kotkin chooses to ignore some critical information about Stalin's childhood. A number of recent studies, based largely on evidence that Stalin, once in power, insisted be locked away in archives, reveals the young boy to have suffered material deprivation and a lot of physical and emotional abuse. Do the newly available records show conclusively that Stalin was so damaged that he became a sociopath? No. But those records are highly suggestive. Yet in several places--most notably on page 735--Kotkin says "the beatings likely never took place." Now how on earth could Kotkin know that? He never explains why he disregards the evidence of abuse let alone why, if there were no good evidence, we should believe in a Caucasian version of Little House on the Prairie.Kotkin goes on to suggest that Stalin did not become sociopathic until he was an adult, brutalized by his political conflicts with Trotsky and others. In short, the evil emerged when Stalin was in his 40s. That, though, is as strange a view of personality development as it is of the man himself. The prevailing view among psychologists is that psychopathy/sociopathy are either genetic or induced by extreme abuse during childhood. The notion that a man could be normal, or nearly normal, until nearly middle age and then develop the sort of sadism exhibited by Stalin is a real stretch. Furthermore, it requires almost a willful decision to ignore several instances of ruthless behavior during Stalin's 20s and 30s, a pervasive philandering, and a penchant for violence (or ordering violence) that was both widely recognized and typical of the main Bolsheviks. Once again, Kotkin offers no alternative to the plausible story told by students of the newly available records: that Stalin was profoundly damaged in childhood and developed through adolescence and early adulthood the way most sociopaths do.2) A number of the recent studies (for example, Montefiore's Young Stalin) have found in the archives answers to a previously perplexing question. Namely, why would Lenin in the late 1910s treat a Georgian rube with few ties to Russian and European Marxist leaders as well as he did Stalin? Why was Stalin preferred so consistently over older and more experienced, more connected Bolsheviks? Several of the recent studies contend that Stalin ran a gang of thugs in the Caucasus, and particularly in Baku, that robbed banks, kidnapped members of rich families and held them for ransom, etc., and then forwarded the money to Lenin and his associates. Stalin was a big source of funding for the Bolsheviks, so Lenin needed him. Now, however, Kotkin says that the case for Stalin's life as a gangster is largely unproven. That is strictly true; the evidence is certainly not "beyond a reasonable doubt." But in history the standard is "what is the most reasonable, the most logical explanation?" and in that context the gangster theory has a lot going for it. When Kotkin then insists that Stalin did not run a criminal enterprise that financed much of the Bolshevik effort, he leaves us once again facing that troublesome original question: why would Lenin have treated Stalin so well for so long? Having resurrected the question, Kotkin ventures no answer at all.3) In order to argue against the newly consensual view that Stalin had a horrible childhood, emerged as a young sociopath, organized a criminal gang, and forwarded his earnings to Lenin, Kotkin has no choice but to ignore the bulk of the evidence that is available regarding Stalin's early decades. The result is a strange reticence. Why would a biographer refuse to address a significant body of evidence about his subject? Perhaps to differentiate his book from other recently published biographies. In any case, the silence about young Stalin is a significant flaw in a book that purports to be a biography. Ultimately that silence renders the book more a history of Bolshevism and the Soviet Union than a description of Stalin's life. Now the positive. As a history of Bolshevism and the Soviet Union, the book is excellent. One example is Kotkin's description of the factional struggles in the socialist movement before the October 1917 Revolution and afterwards. The analysis here is clearer than in most books and does a better job of explaining why, for instance, Stalin turned against Kamenev and Zinoviev when he did and why he later had no choice but to isolate and weaken Bukharin, Rykov, and Tomsky. Kotkin shows quite persuasively why these were pragmatic moves and not simply the result of Stalin's sadism and opportunism. Another strength is Kotkin's treatment of "Lenin's Testament" and the other documents that magically appeared after Lenin's death and that purported to show that Lenin wanted Stalin ousted from power. The author's contention that those documents may have been fabricated by Stalin's enemies is well-argued and well-documented. Kotkin certainly changed my view on that matter. Finally, whereas a lot of writers describe Stalin as a mere opportunist with little ideological conviction, Kotkin demonstrates a consistent devotion to Marxism-Leninism that reasserted itself time and again in Stalin's actions and policies. The result is a portrayal of Stalin not as a cynical and sadistic opportunist but as a zealous communist who, when necessary, made tactical retreats with cynical and sadistic ease. He was a murderous sociopath, but an ideologically committed and consistent one.So the book is definitely worth reading. I really regret the sparse analysis of Stalin's youth. One of the problems that arises constantly in history is the way in which ruthless leaders--Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Pol Pot, Saddam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden--rise to the top of their movements or states. These people often combine political charisma, geopolitical insight, extreme cynicism, vindictiveness, and sadism. To understand what produces, and will continue to produce, such "leaders" one must understand their childhood environments and experiences. An author who chooses to ignore or de-emphasize such factors does the student of history and of current events a disservice by refusing to shed any light on the wellsprings of human evil. Nevertheless, Kotkin's book is a very solid treatment of Bolshevism and the Soviet Union and, by its latter chapters, its focus on Stalin has sharpened somewhat.I hope he moves further in that direction in the second volume.

Minorities and Family Therapy

From the Back Cover

This book highlights the work of experienced, sensitive clinicians who, along with minority families, have found creative solutions to the problems minority families present. Until now, the field of family therapy has paid little attention to the specific clinical needs and strengths of minority families. Without sufficient exploration and training, family therapists risk treating minority families from a narrow, incomplete perspective, filtering out their inner resources, values, legacies, history, and wisdom, and underestimating the influence of the social settings in which they live. This unique and highly valuable book explores how systems-oriented clinicians presently work with ethnic and racial minority families. The chapters cover a wide range of clinical issues including pitfalls of misunderstanding and discrimination, innovative strategies for treating drug abuse and AIDS, and skills needed in caring for particular minority groups, such as Native Americans, blacks, Latinos, and Asian Americans.
