This is by far the best introductory text on visual culture I have personally come across. I strongly disagree with some previous reviewers that say the writing is "pompous" or "needlessly complex"; I am by no means an expert on the subject and I found the writing to be extremely comprehensive and even generous when it comes to explanations. The authors seem to make a great effort to be understood and a lot of really complex concepts are presented in a surprisingly and refreshing clear manner. I also disagree with a previous review that claimed that technical terms are frequently unexplained (I, in fact, think quite the opposite). Maybe the complaints about it being "unnecessarily long" could be somewhat justified if you consider that illustrating the concepts through concrete examples is "unnecessary". I think that the examples (although I admit I sometimes skimmed through them) present the rich context of visual culture and even make the text quite pleasant and colorful. That, in my opinion, is really something to be thankful for when it comes to "academic" texts.That said, I have some complaints about the quality-price ratio of the actual materiality of the book itself. I initially borrowed the first edition from my university library (where they gave it a hardcover treatment for durability) and read it almost completely through. As I already said, I thought it was great (and wanted to read the new sections added on the second edition) so I decided to buy it regardless of the surprisingly high $80 price tag. I was quite disappointed when it arrived. The paper is not too great, the typography is not the best for reading and the cover is made from a flimsy and thin "plastified" paper (I also think the design of the cover itself is awful -5 minute random cut and paste-, but you can see that from the product photo and I guess its irrelevant). Besides this, I find the format too big (it is exactly A4!). Thus, the book ends up being one of those "squiggly" books that feel like a wet fish when you have it in your hands. I admit this is not so serious, but for $80 bucks I was expecting something better made...In conclusion: content-wise the book is top notch; materially-wise it leaves a lot to be desired. It is extremely useful and it is no doubt a work of great scholarship. However, its not one of those books you enjoy having in your hands or in your bookshelf (and it will undoubtedly hurt your wallet).

we had to read this for my course and i LOVED IT, very informational and very eye opening. If you want to learn about the visual world of our society and culture then this is the perfect book

When I was looking for a textbook for my visual sociology class I went through several highly academic and rather deadly boring books. Then I came across this one. While it is not exactly what I wanted, it does cover about 90% of the needs for this class. Chapters are set in a logical order and take into account political, commercial as well as sociological and cultural aspects of "looking at" photos, sculptures, paintings, TV and films. All of this is combined with an historical frame. The terminology is well defined and placed into context with understandable examples. The photos and paintings, propaganda material and TV adds are valuable and relevant to the what is covered in the text. It is a readable text but there is one drawback....the authors beat the proverbial dead house when it comes to discussion. Like many academics, including some of my own colleagues, they like to hear themselves talk and, in this case, being read. I am more the..make your point and move on type. So while the book could probably be better edited, it is nonetheless a most valuable source in the practice of looking.

It's ok. It is alittle too dense for most readers. and for anyone with a visual comm or art/design background most if the info is not new.

This book is part of a course I am taking. You never know what book will impact you forever. This one did that for me. It was interesting reading and demanded that you think about the world and how constructs are created all around you without you ever giving it a thought.

This is an edition for young people, as the cover indicates. I enjoyed reading it, having made the choice to read it with someone I am tutoring, but I loved the original book (one of my all-time favorites) even more; this one leaves some things out. Elizabeth Borton de Trevino is--or, I should say, was, as she died in 2001 in her late 90s--a delightful writer.

I bought this book for my eighth grader's homeschool curriculum. I read it first, and I absolutely loved it. It is humorous and engaging, taking the reader through old customs and traditions from provincial Mexico, and providing an interesting comparison to our culture. My daughter enjoyed it at least as much, and it's provided material for several interesting discussions, not only on Mexican traditions, but life in general. I've recommended to several people, including one of my dearest friends who is in her seventies. You will not regret purchasing this book.

This book is an autobiography of an American woman who came to Mexico on what she thought was going to be a brief assignment and ended marrying with a Mexican and staying in Mexico for the rest of her happy life. But the book is much more than this. It describes the clash between the very different cultures of Mexico and the USA which result, almost always, in hilarious situations.Almost everything described happens in Monterrey, Mexico where she lived with her husband and eventually with her children, but as she mentions in the book, the extended family is extremely important in Mexico and she got to love and respect her "Mamacita" and "Papacito" (mother and father-in-law) as much, or maybe even more, than her own parents. "To Mamacita and Papacito I dedicate this book in loving memory."The Treviño Borton family is, in my humble opinion, "every family of mankind, the archetypal family about whom all mankind is dreaming." (Quoting from a review of Finnegans Wake). As such, anyone may appreciate this book, but... for Regiomontanos (people from Monterrey) it means much more: it describes the inner workings of the social fabric in the city, it brings to life the infinite subtlety of their ways, it gives a microscopic historical view of the 1930's that you can hardly find anywhere else, it creates a deep longing for a beautiful past.I, like Borton, married with Monterrey. Her husband was Luis Treviño. My wife is Olivia Treviño and through Borton I finally understood why "the Family" is of such overwhelming importance for my wife.The interest that this book generated in me was so great that I decided to journey through Elizabeth's world... 70 years later.I have built a web site where you can see how her house, her Mamacitas house, and many other places she mentions in the book look TODAY... 70 YEARS LATER. ...Many things have changed during the years but writing from Monterrey I can say, as she once said, "I was then, as now, so safe, so happy, within that fortress - the family."

a gift- I read this book years ago and loved it

I loved this book. It was an easy read, the characters were very "real", and I learned a lot about living in Mexico. I especially found her musings about marriages in Mexico entertaining.

I like this text a lot. It has been useful for my neuroanatomy courses in chiropractic school. My background is chemical engineering - not biology - and this text is well written and makes a great companion for both neuro lecture and neuro lab.

Great book for grad level Neuroanatomy!

received very quickly after ordering and in great condition. has very helpful pictures and is very in depth for my university 300 level neuroscience level in brain anatomy. been informed by the instructor that this is a book that is helpful all the way through grad school-- great buy, i will have this book for the rest of my life.

The book is exactly what I needed, and is actually pretty well written and laid out. That being said, while I don't mind learning lots of things and I like knowing everything I can, I hate trying to memorize anatomy. I guess that's more of a class gripe than a book complaint, haha.

This was the required text for my Graduate Neuroanatomy course and I must say it is one of the best neuroanatomy text available. I reviewed two others including Neuroanatomy by Haines, and neuroanatomy through clinical cases, and the neuroanatomy by martin seems to be the most clearly written and best organized. The strengths of this book are its organization, which leads to an efficient learning strategy, and its clarity of information, particulary in the figures and diagrams. That is really what separates this text from the others, its explination of pathways is very clear and is organized in a way that allows the reader to retain much of the information covered with only one reading. The chapters are fairly streamlined giving mostly straight forward information without the clutter of other text. This text focuses mainly on pathways, as a neuroanatomy text should, and is oriented mainly for the clinical sciences. The only short comings of this text are a few typos in some of the figures, which are obvious and should not confuse the reader if they are referring to the text as well. The text is fairly comprehensive and serves as a good primer to neuroanatomy, but readers should remember that this is a textbook, and so it is not designed to contain vast amounts of detail over every region. But for its intended purpose, to serve as a base for more advanced study, this text is probably one of the best.

This is one of several books I bought while in med school studying neuroscience. This is a beautiful text, with wonderful drawings, good use of catscans and MRIs, and an excellent layout. It helped me considerably to learn the anatomy of the spinal cord and brain. Since I am deaf and they couldn't deal with it in a classroom (looking down at microscopes does not make lipreading easy or help my interpreters)...they sent me to the morgue with medical students and nursing students. This book provided the background I needed to do well in this situation, because the drawings were explicit enough to be recognizeable when presented with the real thing. I also use this book with deaf students who I hope to encourage to go into science. The drawings always get them interested enough to ask questions, and that is what good science is about. The text of this book is quite easy to read, as medical textbooks go, and the figures in this book are excellent and easy to follow. A wonderful feature of this book is the double-page organization of the atlas portion showing brain sections. For each section, the left-hand page is an unmarked full-page photograph of the section, and the right-hand page is the same photograph with labels and borders drawn around the structures. This is much more helpful than the traditional approach that simply has a line pointing to a structure, for this approach shows the size, shape, and limits of the structure as well as its location. The unmarked photographs allow you to test yourself. I highly recommend this book for Neuroanatomy students.

This detailed Neuroanatomy text and atlas book is a great source for those interested in Neuroanatomy development and structure. It covers almost everything of central nervous system development from A to Z. And it's strength is the perfectly combination of text with relevant images. What you read is what you can also find in the image, which makes it easier to follow and remember.

This book was an easy read that left me contemplating at the end of each story. This is compilation of short stories involving the future and all tied together by being written in moving picture form across the flesh of the Illustrated Man. Each story is unique and teaches a lesson about the human spirit - some of these lessons are a brutal reflection of the negative and other stories show that hope can prevail. There were very few happy endings in the stories, but the sad stories still had a great lesson to teach about what lies inside a person. It really was quite intriguing.These stories were written in the late 1940s and early 1950s and it's very interesting that the majority of the stories about the future involved rockets, space travel, and life on other planets. It's funny how the future back then all focused on the discovery of what is out there in space, yet current books about the future more involve the collapse of current social systems and reconstruction of society. Maybe I don't read very much Sci-Fi, but it seems to me that the outlook of the future has changed since the 1950s. I really found this book intriguing. Each and every story left me thinking about something. It was very thought provoking.

First, the cover was much different than the picture listed. But it proved to be a great thing, the cover I received was really bright and it showed the tattoos on the back of a turned away man. Perfectly fitting for the book. As far as the content, let me tell you this : I read the first few pages and told my husband how great it was. He then took it, began reading and I did not get it back until he was finished with it. It is great. Full of interesting stories that leave you still thinking about them. Wonderfully written. Expected nothing less than perfection coming from Ray Bradbury. <3 And YES it arrived just days later. Safe packaging. Great buy!

I have yet to read a book that has so many different social commentaries packed into such a small space. I originally read this when I was in the seventh grade, and it's crazy because every time I've read it since then (4 times) you find something different that you didn't see before.Also, Ray Bradbury is definitely a time traveler from the future - you'll know what I mean when you buy this book.That being said, if you can't buy into stories about the future, and time travel, or the fact that the entire book is based off some guys moving tattoos, than you don't have the intellect to be able to read this book.If you want to explore themes that tackle tough issues, like spoiling children, race, religion, and many many more, then.... I've read the book, multiple times, during my younger days and have misplaced it. I just wanted another one, to take with me hiking and read again. It is a Great Book, full of multiple science fiction stories, that will take you away from your Day-to-Day worries and make you Wish at other times. The book arrived to my home in a short reasonable time, packed very well and the condition of it was as stated by the company that I bought it from. Thank You!

One of my favorite authors, Bradbury is like none other. I read this book of short stories in my teens, and find it now, in my middle age years, to be much richer and more poetic than I did then. A must read for any sci-fi fan. Though the references to the 1990's and obvious (though unintended, I'm sure) sexism may cause a cringe or two for some, I suggest reading with an open and discerning mind. These stories are more cautionary tales than prophecy.

The sleeping man's tattoos come to life revealing stories of space travel, mysteries and the future. Ray Bradbury's classic book of many different stories written with his own twist. Who can forget some of the best descriptive words ever written in the first paragraph of -The Long Rain? "It was a hard rain, a perpetual rain, a sweating and steaming rain; it was a mizzle, a downpour, a fountain, a whipping in the eyes, an undertow at the ankles; it was a rain to drown all rains and the memory of rains." Wonderful!

Reading the stories is like watching a few gours of the Twilight Zone: a series of mid-century morality plays with uncanny similarities to the real world despite sci-fi settings. Some stories are ironic, some existentially terrifying, some cathartic, and some a little bit weak. Bradbury's way of weaving metaphors and figurative language over several paragraphs even in the midst of a relatively mundane storyline is always satisfying.

My daughter is little. She jumped out into the world a month earlier than her due date, standing upright in my belly, ready to hit the ground running! Her size hasn’t stopped her from joining in and playing with (or bossing around) kids twice her size. When she was two, a four-year-old boy tried to cut in front of her in the line for the slide. She blocked him, raised her tiny finger, and said, “Wait your turn!” The boy was so shocked, he was cowed into meekly waiting behind her.As a parent, I find myself drawn to books with small heroes, underdogs who overcome challenges to save the day. I want to build up her self-confidence so she can continue to be courageous and inquisitive, even after she finally realizes that she’s small.So when I found “The Tortoise’s Gift,” I was delighted. It’s a book about animals in Zambia who are hungry and thirsty because it stopped raining. Their only hope is to awaken a wonderful tree that is said to grow everyone’s favorite fruits when they are in need, but no one can remember the tree’s name. The only one old enough to remember is the rocky mountain, but who among the animals has what it takes to go all the way to the mountain and bring the name back? The lion, elephant, and chimps all fail, and it is the tortoise, dismissed by everyone as being too small and too slow, who succeeds.There’s a lot of repeating elements in the book that engaged my daughter and allowed her to memorize the text and participate just after the second reading. The illustrations are whimsical, and I particularly enjoy that sometimes, the animals have text bubbles where they share some thought or emotion. I get a guaranteed giggle when I read the text bubble and mimic what the animal is doing.“The Tortoise’s Gift” is also a great introductory chapter book. My daughter is too impatient to wait for the next chapter until the next day, so we haven’t yet been able to read any longer books. This book is short enough to read in one sitting, but it familiarizes you with the idea of chapters.Here's a fun activity to do with your child:* When the animals all ask the tree for their favorite fruit, have your child join in and ask for her favorite fruit as well.* Pretend that a dining room chair is the mountain. Have your child go to the chair, ask its name, then walk back to you chanting the mountain’s name with each step, just like the tortoise.* When she gets back to you, have a piece of fruit ready (preferably her favorite one), and let her have a bite!

I really enjoy this and the Monster series. I'll buy more. My 7 year old and I read it to each other.

I bought this book for my five year old daughter and this quickly turned into her favorite. It is a wonderful story about animals trying to find the name of a tree so it will wake up and feed them with all different kinds of fruit. It has a great moral and is a feel good story. Highly recommended!

My five year old and three year old love this story. I love it as well. The moral of the story is similar to the tortoise and the hare, slow and steady win the race. But it's such a better story. During a drought the hungry animals find a wonderful tree that can bear various fruit for all the animals. If only they knew the tree's name. They hatch a plot to travel to the mountain to see if he knows the tree's name. My kids ask to read it again and again, giggling when the mountain rumbles and how the animals each forget the name of the tree on their return trip. A slow and humble tortoise succeeds where the mighty lion, smart elephant, and clever monkeys fail. We love the illustrations, and how the animals are rendered. Recommend highly.

As a licensed OUPV Captain, the U.S.C.G. requires me to carry the most current Navigation Rules and Regulations Handbooks on board my vessel. Unlike the Nav. Rules and Regs that you can print for free directly from the Coast Guard's website, I needed one that was not only durable but could be left on a boat without getting destroyed in a salt water environment. I was a little apprehensive about ordering the handbook at first because after an exhaustive internet search, many that I found were either out of date or to expensive to purchase. But when I stumbled upon this version, I read its description and it appeared to have everything I was looking for. So, I decided to purchased it through Amazon Prime and after anxiously waiting for it, I received it on my door step on-time as expected. As I open the package and pulled out the book, I immediately went onto the Coast Guard's website to cross reference all the revisions with this book. Much to my amaze, I was shocked to see that as of April 2017, the handbook was up to date! Thank you Amazon...

These changes have NOT yet showed up on the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) website as a Notice to Mariners.There is the new Navigation Rules Book published and supersedes the current Commandant Instruction, COMDTINST M16672.2D. There will not be another COMDINST issued in its stead, but rather this handbook.Rule 25 is being amended so that sailing vessels less than 7 meters and vessels under oars can now display an all-around white light or an electric torch or lighted lantern.(i) A sailing vessel of less than 7 meters in length shall, if practicable, exhibit the lights prescribed in paragraph (a) or (b) of this Rule, but if she does not, she shall have ready at hand an electric torch or lighted lantern showing a white light which shall be exhibited in sufficient time to prevent collision.(ii) A vessel under oars may exhibit the lights prescribed in this Rule for sailing vessels, but if she does not, she shall have ready at hand an electric torch or lighted lantern showing a white light which shall be exhibited in sufficient time to prevent collision.The INLAND lighting scheme for fishing vessels in close proximity that was formerly located in Annex 2 is now located under Rule 26, Fishing Vessels, right after lighting for a vessel engaged in fishing.The dredge pipeline lighting scheme that was formerly located in Annex 5 is now located under Rule 27, Vessels not under command or restricted in their ability to maneuver, right after lighting for dredges.INLAND Rule 30, Anchored Vessels and Vessels Aground, was changed to read:(g) A vessel of less than 20 meters in length, when at anchor in a special anchorage area designated by the Coast Guard, shall not be required to exhibit the anchor lights and shapes required by this Rule.(h) The following barges shall display at night and if practicable in periods of restricted visibility the lights described in paragraph (i) of this Rule:(i) Every barge projecting into a buoyed or restricted channel.(ii) Every barge so moored that it reduces the available navigable width of any channel to less than 80 meters.(iii) Barges moored in groups more than two barges wide or to a maximum width of over 25 meters.(iv) Every barge not moored parallel to the bank or dock.(i) Barges described in paragraph (h) of this Rule shall carry two unobstructed all-round white lights of an intensity to be visible for at least 1 nautical mile and meeting the technical requirements as prescribed in Annex I (33 CFR part 84).INLAND Rule 30, Anchored Vessels and Vessels Aground, was changed to read:(j) A barge or a group of barges at anchor or made fast to one or more mooring buoys or other similar device, in lieu of the provisions of this Rule, may carry unobstructed all-round white lights of an intensity to be visible for at least 1 nautical mile that meet the requirements of Annex I (33 CFR part 84) and shall be arranged as follows:(i) Any barge that projects from a group formation, shall be lighted on its outboard corners.(ii) On a single barge moored in water where other vessels normally navigate on both sides of the barge, lights shall be placed to mark the corner extremities of the barge.(iii) On barges moored in group formation, moored in water where other vessels normally navigate on both sides of the group, lights shall be placed to mark the corner extremities of the group.(k) The following are exempt from the requirements of this Rule:(i) A barge or group of barges moored in a slip or slough used primarily for mooring purposes.(ii) A barge or group of barges moored behind a pierhead.(iii) A barge less than 20 meters in length when moored in a special anchorage area designated in accordance with § 109.10 of this chapter.(l) Barges moored in well-illuminated areas are exempt from the lighting requirements of this section. These areas are as follows:Vessels < 20 meters are no longer required to carry a bell. To account for this change:INLAND Rule 33, Equipment for Sound Signals, was changed to read:A vessel of 12 meters or more in length shall be provided with a whistle, a vessel of 20 meters or more in length shall be provided with a bell in addition to a whistle, and a vessel of 100 meters or more in length shall, in addition, be provided with a gong, the tone and sound of which cannot be confused with that of the bell. The whistle, bell and gong shall comply with the specifications in Annex III to these Rules (33 CFR part 86). The bell or gong or both may be replaced by other equipment having the same respective sound characteristicRule 35, Sound Signals in Restricted Visibility, was changed to read:A vessel of 12 meters or more but less than 20 meters in length shall not be obliged to give the bell signals prescribed in paragraphs (g) and (h) of this Rule. However, if she does not, she shall make some other efficient sound signal at intervals of not more than 2 minutes.The handbook will now include VESSEL TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT 33 CFR 161 information. This is complimentary information to the listing of Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) areas located in the original Commandant Instruction.

This is a print on demand copy of the PDF file you can download directly from the U.S. Coast Guard. The problem with this is that to print correctly a blank page needs to be inserted between pages iv and 1. The result is that you aren't looking at the corresponding International and Inland rules side by side. For example, with a properly printed book you'll see International Rule 6 on the left page and Inland Rule 6 on the right page. With this edition you see Inland Rule 6 on the left page and International Rule 7 on the right. If you're just carrying the book to meet the letter of the law, it's fine. But if you are buying the book to study for a license exam it's not good at all.

Trash. Black and white for navigation lights? Dumb. And it's EXTREMELY out of date. STOP SELLING THIS. MARITIME LAW HAS CHANGED, you're selling out of date information!!

This is the law for mariners, both professional and recreational. It is the Rules of the Road for boaters. It has the Inland and International rules on facing pages so you can easily see any difference between the two. All boats 12 meters or more in length (about 40 feet) must have a copy on board. It is not the easiest publication to read but what legal document is? It has numerous drawings to help explain the complex rules pertaining to lights required on various vessels. The price is very reasonable.

I had to chuckle when I got a request from Amazon to review this book....it's an official US government handbook of rules and regulations, not exactly something you buy for entertainment. If you need the information contained it this book it's a good source of correct, precise rules and regulations "right from the horse's mouth". If you read it for pleasure, you seriously need counseling!

The incorrect 2014 version without the latest Feb 2018 corrections was shipped. That version was poorly copied on plain paper and no color. After a quick return/reorder, this version's quality is far superior, properly printed with color on heavy stock paper. If I'm ever boarded the DNR or USCG should be impressed...if they ask to see it! .-)

This book is a must if working on seamanship or a captain's license. It's required on any vessel greater than 40 feet. The other versions on amazon did not look to be in color for the needed lights. This is a color version with everything you need.
